There are also animals. Though animals can’t tell the police officers what they’ve suffered, these are some of the hardest cases to solve.‎ As we all know, poachers can make a lot of money by selling meat, fur and other parts of protected animals. As the animals become rarer, their parts become ‎ more valuable. So poachers earn even greater rewards for their collection of protected species. In the past few years, the price of ivory has risen to about $850 per kg. An ivory can sometimes weigh 11 kg or more.‎ Now, scientists are fighting back. It is known that DNA plays a big part in solving human crimes. Like fingerprints, DNA is unique to every person. So by examining DNA in blood or hair, the police can recognize criminals and victims. ‎ When the police find poached animal parts, such as their fur or bones, it is difficult to know what species the victims are, which is mostly cared about. DNA can prove helpful in figuring it out and also where the animals came from. That’s because members of one local group of animals share more DNA in common with each other than they do with more distant groups of their species. ‎ If the world’s poaching victims could talk, they would probably thank these scientists for their work. ‎ 41. The author uses the example of ivory to show that ________.‎ A. ivory is the most expensive part of an elephant ‎ B. poaching is a very common activity in the world ‎ C. poachers always treat the protected animals cruelly D. poachers make a large profit from their illegal activities ‎42. The 193 employees rated their feelings about having pets in the office on a six-point scale. ‎ The companies that allowed pets tended to be smaller, and they did so because the owner or manager wanted to bring his or her own pet to work. Most employees enjoyed having pets in the workplace —even workers who didn’t own pets themselves. ‎ Employees reported that pets in the workplace help foster social communication and are good for business. ‎ Not everyone was entirely enthusiastic. Some drawbacks reported were noise from barking, hair on the furniture, the possibility of the animal urinating on the floor, and allergies. There was also some concern that clients or customers may have allergies or be afraid of the animal. ‎ ‎45. The writer wrote this text mainly to ________.‎ ‎ A. teach how to improve work efficiency ‎ B. tell how to raise pets in the workplace ‎ ‎ C. explain why there are so many people keeping pets ‎ D. introduce a finding between pets and work efficiency ‎46. Do you want to power your home with the energy of your own activities? These are two of the developments that experts at International Business Machines Company (IBM) think will become reality within the next five years. The technology company has released its latest “5 in 5” report. ‎ The experts at IBM think people will soon be able to control many electronic devices simply by using their mind. They say people will soon have a way to just think about calling or emailing someone in order to make it happen. ‎ Another prediction is a way for people to power their homes and offices using energy from activities like walking or running. Bernie Meyerson, IBM’s Vice President of Innovation, says this is known as micro-electronic generation. ‎ Another prediction: passwords could soon become a thing of past. IBM says developments in biometric technology could soon make passwords unnecessary. Some of the most common biometrics used to identify people are fingerprints, face and voice recognition, and iris scans. The iris is the colored part of the eye. That is because many animals are being killed without mercy by poachers so that some of them are in danger of dying out in the world. Besides, many trees are being cut down and more and more forests are lost, making many animals lose their homes to live in. Many fields are being turned into desert, which made the animals living there have no place to find food to eat. ‎ As far as I’m concerned, some measures should be taken to stop this from happening again. Firstly, natural reserves should be set up to protect all the animals. Secondly, all the illegal hunting should be punished. Most of all, all people should be made aware of the importance of environment protection. Only in this way can we save nature and animals, which are of great value to our human beings. ‎
