The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary, quality as her sisters'. Their father was Patrick Bronte born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy. Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes. As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher (出版商), but there was no interest shown in Charlotte's book. (It was not published until 1869. ) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; Thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847. Jane Eyre was immediately successful; The other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal-like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of her book, and Anne died in 1847. Charlotte published Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1863. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis (肺结核) as her sisters had. 59. What did the Bronte sisters want to do for Branwell Bronte? A. Help him write stories. B. Help him get trained in art. C. C John had been on the road visiting clients for more than three weeks. He couldn't wait to get back to Ohio to see his wife and children. It was coming on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too tired. He was in a small town just outside of Little Rock when he drove by a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send Mom some roses." He went into the small shop and saw a young man talking to the clerk. "How many roses can I get for six dollars, madam?" the boy asked. The clerk was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with carnations. "No. I have to have roses." He said, "My mom was sick so much last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that's her favorite." He was firm. The clerk looked up at John and was just shaking her head. Something inside of John was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. John had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the clerk and silently mouthed he would pay for the boy's roses. The clerk looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for six dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran from the store. It was worth the extra thirty-five dollars just to see that kind of excitement. John ordered his own flowers and had the clerk be sure that delivery would include a note telling his mother how much he loved her. As he drove away from the shop, he was feeling very good. He caught a light about two blocks from the shop. As he waited at the light, he saw the young boy walking down the sidewalk. He watched him cross the street and enter a park through two huge gates. Suddenly he realized it wasn't a park. It was a cemetery (公墓). He could see the young man turn there by gate and walk along the fence. The light changed, and John slowly crossed the crossing. He pulled over and on an impulse (冲动之下) got out and began to follow the boy down the fence line. John was on the sidewalk, thirty or forty steps behind the boy, who walked inside the cemetery fence. The young man stopped by a small monument and went on his knees. He carefully laid the roses on the tomb and began to sob. John felt like an intruder but he couldn't leave. He stared at the little boy's trembling body and listened to his silent crying. As he cried, he heard the young man speak, "Mommy, Oh Mommy, why didn't I tell you how much I love you? Why didn't I tell you one more time? Jesus, please, find my mommy. Tell my Mommy I love her." John turned, tears in his eyes, and walked back to his car. He drove quickly to the flower shop and told her he would take the flowers personally. He wanted to be sure and tell his mother one more time just how much he loved her. 63. The young boy actually spent _____ getting the rose flowers. A. 6 dollars B. 35 dollars C. 41 dollars D. more than 6 dollars 64. The underlined word "carnations" in the second paragraph probably _____________. A. is a kind of tree B. is a kind of flower C. means solutions D. is a souvenir 65. From the passage, we can infer _____________. A. John would drive home in person to see his mother with the flowers B. John wanted to spend 35 dollars buying the roses for the young boy C. The young boy would have Jesus find his mommy D. The young boy would turn back to thank John 66. On the clerk's approval of giving the flowers, the young boy was wild with joy because _________. A. he knew he wouldn't have got the flowers without John's help B. the clerk was very kind to help him C. he was able to show his love to his mother with the flowers D. he was successful in saving some money 67. The best title for this passage may be __________________. A. Celebrate Mother's Day B. Buy flowers C. Deliver the roses D. Tell Mum I love her D Everyone could make impulse(冲动) and buy something unnecessary. Then how to avoid it? The best way is to just keep your hands away from tempting(诱人的) products. According to new research, individuals who touch possible items in stores are more likely to have an increased desire to buy them than those who keep their hand off the products. Suzanne Shu and Joann peck, marketing professors at the University of Wisconsin’s business school conducted studies on the connection between touch and feelings of ownership and the effect of perceived(感觉)ownership on the value placed on an object. For one of the experiments, the experts placed two products, a Slinky toy and a coffee mug(杯子)in front of the volunteers who were undergraduate students. About half of the participants were allowed to touch the products, while the other half were asked not to touch them. The volunteers then were asked to express their sense of ownership of the products and to report how much money they were willing to pay for each. The results showed that those students who were allowed to touch the objects reported significant increased level of perceived ownership. They also expressed a desire to pay more money to obtain the products. The investigators(调查人员) also discovered that a sense of very pleasant feelings when touching products determined how much money consumers were willing to pay. However, if the object did not feel pleasant to the touch, it significantly decreased the amount the buyers were willing to pay. Researchers said that many stores have already followed the right path. But what can be done while shopping online, when touching of an item is not possible? In this case, the experts say, just picturing in mind that they are touching it and then owning it, will cause greater feelings of ownership, and thus the consumers will be more likely to make a purchase. When you touch an object, you immediately feel some kind of a connection to it, according to the researchers. That connection stirs up(唤起) an emotional reaction. And that emotion can make people buy something they would never even consider buying if they had not touched it. 68.How does the author develop the text? A. By drawing a conclusion through research. B. By providing typical examples. C. By comparing opinions from different fields. D. By presenting a cause and analyzing its effects. 69.Which of the following was found in the research? A. Shoppers cannot resist the temptation when they meet things they like. B. If you are not to spend money, it’s less possible for you to touch the product. C. Touching a product affects the customer’s feelings of desire for it. D. The longer you touch the goods, the more desire you have to own them. 70.What would happen to them when people do online shopping? A. They will particularly want to touch the products advertised on the Internet. B. They just imagine its ownership and simply evaluate the objects in their minds. C. They desire to possess it and do not care how much money they would pay. D. People’s imaginable ownership resulted in greatly higher valuations of the products. It’s never too late to right your wrongs, big or small. Working as hard as I had been over the years, I had become disconnected from(失去联系的)the people who mattered most to me. I decided to spend a year reconnecting with my friends and relatives and making amends(补偿). I devoted myself to caring for what I called “my unfinished business”, which has helped me become a more attentive husband, father, son and friend —and a happier, more energetic person. Now that I’ve had a good opportunity to revisit my past mistakes—and experience the rewards of fixing them—I’d like to share some of the lessons I have learned: Have you lost touch with people who were important to you? Are there things you’ve done or not done that are in front of you? Are there people in your life you don’t know how much they meant to you? List your unfinished business and take action to deal with it. Instead of trying to put an end to the cold war dividing your family, begin with a small thing you can control. Apologize to your brother for not attending his Super Bowl party. Respond to an e-mail you should have answered a week ago. Write a note or make a call. No matter what the wrong is, the most important thing in making it right is your sincerity. If you reach out with a genuine (真诚的)heart, your friends will be glad to hear from you again. This is the key to learning and growing. Keep a journal, or summarize what you’ve learned in e-mails to friends. The difficulty we face in dealing with our unfinished business can seem impossibly big, but the first step to clearing them can be simple: Again, write a note or make a phone call .Once you discover your fears and get over them, you’ll become a more complete and pleased person. Economists consider it essential to make great efforts to develop economy . As they have pointed out, the advancement of society is based on the development of economy. Besides. Economic development helps to increase the living standard. Furthermore, the development of economy has created more jobs opportunities for people. Above all, economic development does not necessarily prevent the protection of nature. On the contrary, environmentalists insist that the conservation of nature should come first. On the one hand, nature is the mother of mankind. On the other hand, economic development in the last few decades has seriously damaged natural resources. They argue that people should never develop economy at the cost of nature. As far as I am concerned, we can not deny the profit brought by the development of economy .But we should try every means achieve economic development without harming nature. I strongly hold the belief that nature and economy may go hand in hand. 查看更多
