At one time, this was pretty much true. During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier. The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (监督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. There were all together 4 layers, which was made of different materials, such as sand, rocks, stones and so on. Also, Roman roads were cambered (拱形). This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag (之字形的)pattern to make the road rise gradually. All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousand paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, who was emperor at the time, the road’s destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers. Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts of Roman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive achievements of the Roman Empire. 21. The following description about Roman roads is true EXCEPT _____. A. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites(寄生虫)from the soil. An American may have a solution for those barefoot kids—a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long. “It grows in three places: the front; the side with Velcro; the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.”The shoe comes in two sizes: small for children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 10 to 14. Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya“..…and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were so small that she had to cut off the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?’” However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality.“I kept writing. I should do this because of this or because of that.”Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. “I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for over five years.” 24. Which of the following is the characteristic of the newly invented shoes? A. They are more expensive. B. They are not so comfortable. C. They can grow with a child. D. They come in different sizes. 25. Who is this kind of newly invented shoes intended for? A. All the teenagers. B. Children aged 4 to 14. C. Middle-aged women in Africa. D. Senior citizens on low incomes. 26. What does Para.4mainly talk about? A. How the shoes work. B. How Lee got his inspiration. C. How to make the new shoes. D. Where to order this kind of shoes. 27. Why does Kenton Lee keep a pair of his own shoes in the office? A. To remind him of his promise. B. To copy the design of them. C. To make changes conveniently. D. To use them as an example. (C) Winslow Homer was a famous American painter. Since Art History class in college,I had always admired his works and I was lucky to see a large exhibition of his works when I was in my early 30s. It was at this event that I bought a print of his painting “Snap the Whip”. It always hung in my classroom until I retired from teaching. I thought it truly captured the freedom and fun of childhood. In the painting,a group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on the grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes! During my last year of teaching, there was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me and we got to be good friends. She had been an art student before taking up education. Her eyes were drawn immediately to this print when she entered my room. So on my last day of teaching, after the students had left,I took the painting off the wall and walked next door and gave it to her. She was really surprised, but very glad to have it. I was delighted that she liked it and all the students she would have would treasure it as much as I had. We found the perfect place for it on one of her walls and hung it together. I was happy that she brought back this wonderful memory for me. 28. Why didthe author admire the painting “Snap the Whip”so much? A. He hada deep love for children andstudents. B. (D) Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers. A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward. Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example. After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination. When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it. “This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains,”Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.” 32. What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them? A. They fed them. B. They named them. C. They trained them. D. They measured them. 33. How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment? A. By drawing a circle. B. By touching a screen. C. By watching videos. D. By mixing two drinks. 34. What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeys? A. They could perform basic addition. B. They could understand simple words. C. They could memorize numbers easily. D. They could hold their attention for long. 35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D.
