C Today, millions of kids around the globe will take a stand against childhood obesity. How? By getting up, getting outside and exercising at the same time. The children are taking part in Project ACES, which stands for All Children Exercise Simultaneously (同时地). Fitness expert Len Saunders started the yearly event 22 years ago. He hoped Project ACES would motivate young people everywhere to get fit and live healthy lifestyles. According to the American Heart Association, there are some 25 million children and adolescents in the United States who are overweight. That’s nearly 1 in 3 kids. Obesity can lead to many serious health problems. “There is so much research out there that concerns me,” Saunders said. He decided to do something about it. When Project ACES began, Saunders was working at two elementary schools. At first, he envisioned (预想) a day when students in just these two schools would exercise together. But before long, schools across the country found out the plan and wanted to participate. In the following year, schools worldwide were signing up. Valley View Elementary, in Montville, New Jersey, is the host school for the event. Saunders teaches physical education at the school. Valley View plans to hold its Project ACES Day on the playground, where 500 students will get moving with various activities. Jen Kayne has two kids who attend Valley View Elementary. She says they look forward to the event each year. “My kids count down the days until they get to go outside and exercise with their friends,” Kayne says. “Mr. Saunders encourages our children every day and inspires us to live a healthier lifestyle.” Saunders’ new book, Keeping Kids Fit, also features tips on how families can make exercising and eating fun on a regular basis. “My life’s mission is to fight childhood obesity,” he says. “You might not be able to change the world, but you can change your little corner of it. If I can have an impact on one family member or one child, then I’ve succeeded.” 28. What can we learn about Project ACES? A. It is run by the American Heart Association. B. There are two schools joining in it now. C. The Valley View Elementary is the host school for its activities. D. It is held twice a year across the country. 29. Saunders started Project ACES because ____. A. lots of schools pay no attention to physical education B. too many children and adolescents are overweight C. schools in the United States have a distant relationship D. he wanted to advocate his new book, Keeping Kids Fit 30. What is Jen Kayne’s attitude towards Project ACES? A. Satisfied. B. Puzzled. C. Curious. D. Opposed. 31. From the last paragraph, we can learn that Saunders ________. A. wants to change the world B. hopes his new book will be a best-seller C. devotes himself to fighting childhood obesity D. is not satisfied with his current situation D Bamboo is the tallest member in the grass family. It is one of the fastest growing plants on earth, growing reportedly up to 98 inches in just 24 hours. Bamboo is mainly found in Asia, some parts of Africa and parts of the Americas in many different varieties. Over centuries bamboo has had a variety of uses like medicine, paper, construction, furniture, home decoration and musical instruments. The use of bamboo as a construction material is not new and many countries have been using it to build homes for centuries. Bamboo’s unique and efficient natural design makes it a good building material. Bamboo is very flexible and hence when it grows it can be defined to grow into specific shapes. Its shock absorption capacity (减震功能) makes it a great building material for earthquake- resistant houses. Bamboo houses can also stand a hurricane with wind speeds of up to 170 mph. Bamboo is cheap and readily available in areas where it is cultivated. Transportation of bamboo is also cheaper than other materials. The most important quality of bamboo is its environmentally friendly quality. It is renewable and bamboo forests can be grown in a few years. Its naturally smooth surface does not require painting, making it safe from health dangers caused by paint. Bamboo can be grown in a variety of climates and houses made of bamboo do not require use of other materials like concrete (混凝土), steel, etc. Pesticides (杀虫剂) and other chemicals need not be used while cultivating bamboo, making it more eco-friendly. Bamboo also has certain drawbacks. For example, not all types of bamboo can be used for construction. Bamboo cannot be used to build the skyscrapers that we all love. Wet bamboo deteriorates (变坏) faster. Despite all the drawbacks, the environmentally friendly features of bamboo make it a great building material. The few drawbacks that bamboo has can be mitigated with research and the use of bamboo as an alternative building material should be encouraged to make our earth greener. 32. Which is not mentioned in the first paragraph? A. The height of bamboo. B. The varieties of bamboo. C. The growing areas of bamboo. D. The usage of bamboo. 33. What is the main idea of the fifth paragraph? A. The reasons why bamboo is an environ- mentally friendly building material. B. The qualities that bamboo has to make it a good building material. C. The different uses of bamboo throughout history. D. The great demand for bamboo in the world now. 34. What can we learn from the passage? A. Bamboo houses are dangerous in earth- quakes and hurricanes. B. The difficulty of transportation is a drawback of bamboo. C. Bamboo is grown in all parts of the world. D. Bamboo cannot be used to build skyscrapers. 35. The underlined word “mitigated” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “ _______”. A. absorbed B. ignored C. allowed D. reduced 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We know it’s good to learn another language. 36 But to improve our linguistic skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. It’s no wonder then that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning. There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smartphone means you can have a virtual teacher with you wherever you go. 37 There are numerous learning apps available — including our own free BBC Learning English app! One of many popular apps, Duolingo, offers 91 courses in 30 languages and has more than 300 million users. Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer ‘invented’ language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek’s Klingon — lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. 38 But they’re not perfect — you might not understand the grammar and will lack the peer support you could get in a classroom environment. 39 Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He told the BBC that apps should be used alongside classroom methods, without excluding (排除) traditional teaching. And he adds: “The apps are very conversational... they’re not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources.” 40 But attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher, probably forces you to be more committed. Motivation can be a problem when using an app. But if you have a genuine and practical reason to learn another language, you will no doubt stick with it. A. We are confused by different kinds of apps. B. To a certain extent, classrooms benefit us a lot. C. Many app developers are keen to make a profit from the demand. D. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace. E. So, does technology spell the end of traditional classrooms and teachers? F. Certainly, technology is going to help both in and outside the classroom. G. It opens doors, makes you more employable, helps you make new friends, and it’s fun, too. 第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I have been raising money for Children with Cancer UK in memory of my friend’s little boy Henry for the last three years. She wondered what to do to save her. Although the surgery was an immediate necessity, Margaret couldn’t afford the medical bills. She didn’t know who to approach for help. This was the first time that Margaret had seen her mother so severely ill. In their family, she was the only one left to handle the crisis. Margaret had never felt that a lack of money could be such a curse (诅咒) before. In their family, there was never much money, but lots of happiness and warmth. Jennifer always used to tell her daughter that, more than money, one needs to have a big heart. But despite having such a big heart, her mother was lying in the hospital bed and Margaret was not able to arrange for the necessary funds. Margaret was weeping as she held her mother’s hand. Margaret was really surprised when suddenly two people came to take Jennifer to the operating theater. “Excuse us, Ma’am, we need to shift her to the operating theater immediately”, one of the attendants told Margaret. But Margaret was still not able to pay the bills! So how come they were taking her mother to the operating theater? She asked the attendants, who told her to speak to the person in the reception. Margaret ran to the reception desk. The lady there told her that all her bills were cleared and the surgery could easily be conducted now. When Margaret wanted to know who had cleared the bills on her behalf, she was given an envelope. Astonished, she opened it and it read: Hi, You need not worry about the medical bills for Mrs. Thompson. Everything has been settled. In fact, she herself cleared the bills years back with a glass of warm milk and two chocolate cookies. Her surgery is my responsibility. I will try my best to help her recover as soon as possible. In their opinion, parks are public places where all people can have a rest and enjoy themselves. If an entrance fee is charged, some people will surely be kept away from parks. Besides this, in order to charge entrance fees, gates and walls must be built, which harms the look of a city. 40% of students think parks should charge entrance fees, because the gardeners need to be paid and new plants and flowers need to be bought. I think it does more good than harm to charge an entrance fee for parks. But fees should be charged reasonably. 58题.第二节 The letter brought back memories of her mother’s kindness. That day, twenty years ago, little Margaret was playing with her doll and running around the house. The doorbell rang. She remembered the incident that took place after she opened the door. A young boy of around fifteen was standing there with a huge bag in his hand, selling home-made pickles. He said they were made by his mother. He looked tired and stressed. He looked as if he had not had a proper meal. Jennifer called him inside and took two different types of pickles from him. She asked him to wait and went inside to get the money. She came back with money and a glass of warm milk and two cookies. The boy looked surprised. She paid for the pickles and offered him the milk and cookies. He drank the milk, put the cookies in his pocket and thanked her once again before he left. Margaret now truly believed how powerful her mother’s statement was; that, more than money, one needs to have a very big heart. 查看更多
