Modern 10-story building with two elevators. $1,750/month. First month's rent and security deposit(押金) equal to one month's rent required to move in. To see, call City Office Rentals at 382-0838 between 8:30 and 4:30,Tues.-Sat. To:Marilyn Sawyer From:Paul Lebowski Sent:Tuesday,October 3 Subject:Office rental Marilyn, Here's a link to an office rental ad I found online:www.offices.com/10-01. I think it's worth looking at even though the rent is a bit high. I know it is a good deal more than we are paying now, but look at the size. It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space. And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office. I'm sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I'm really tired of using the stairs. I'd like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Try and get one for tomorrow if you can, because after that I'll be away until next Monday, as you know. Thanks. Paul 21. What does the advertised office have that the current office doesn't? A. A kitchen. B. A bathroom. C. A parking area. D. A reception area. 22. How much would Marilyn and Paul have to pay before moving into the advertised office? A. $900. B. $1,750. C. $1,800. D. $3,500. 23. When does Paul want to see the office? A. Monday. B. Tuesday. C. Wednesday. D. Thursday. B My mother grew up in a small coal mining town in southwest Iowa. My grandfather once told me that she knew no stranger and considered everyone in that community her friend. That attitude continued wherever she lived for the rest of her life. As a young girl, I felt embarrassed and cringed (畏缩) every time my mother addressed strangers in the grocery store or on the city bus. She talked to everyone and offered a smile. What really sold me on Mom’s approach to life was her experience on the senior bus, a story I’ve repeated to others many times. The weeks I could not be there, she used this low-cost transportation to the grocery store. After her first trip, I asked her how it went. “Ha!” she said, “I got on that bus and what did I see? Thirteen little old ladies and one old man, and not one word was spoken.” I wondered how long it would be until the somberness (忧郁的氛围) on that bus would change. On my next visit, Mom mentioned the ladies on the bus and something one of them had told her. “Oh, are you talking with them now?” I asked. “Of course,” she said.“One day I climbed up the steps of the bus and before I looked for a seat, I gave them a big smile and I said, ‘Isn’t it a wonderful day?’ I noticed a few shy smiles. ” Mom didn’t give up. She greeted them all each time she got on the bus and before long, the whole group was laughing and talking to one another. The bus became more than just transportation. She’s been gone for ten years but I’ve carried on her recipe for life. I smile at people as I walk by and often begin a conversation in the checkout line. Silent, solemn (严肃的) people respond with smiles of their own and a bit of chatter. All it takes is for one person to initiate (发起) the smile or greeting. It was I who had done the smiling first and all those people had responded. My mother didn’t lecture but taught me by example. She’d given me a recipe for life. 24. How did the writer’s mother break the silence on that senior bus? A. By giving each one of the passengers a gift. B. By telling the passengers some jokes. C. By greeting and smiling at all the passengers. D. By asking the passengers some difficult questions. 25. What does the underlined phrase “sold me on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Helped me find. B. Forced me to be against. C.Encouraged me to give up. D. Persuaded me to accept. 26. What can we infer from the passage? A. The writer once doubted her mother’s approach to life. B. The writer’s mother liked going shopping. C. The writer’s mother used to be a good teacher. D. The writer didn’t like her mother when she was young. 27. The writer wrote this passage in order to ________. A. change the behavior and the thinking of its readers towards making friends. B. encourage people to break the barrier to communication and start conversation bravely. C. analyze why people don’t like communicating with each other in public places. D. convince people that it is important to know how to communicate with strangers. C Manners nowadays in big cities like London are practically nonexistent. It is nothing for a big strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside for the last remaining seat on a bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her,as he ought to. In fact,it is saddening to note that if a man does offer his seat to an older woman, it is nearly always one from the older generation. This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men,who say that, since women have asked for equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with courtesy and that those who go out to work should take their turn in the race like anyone else. Even if it is not agreed that courtesy should be shown to the old, the sick and the burdened, are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently reading a newspaper or a book, saying to ourselves “First come, first served”, while a grayhaired woman,a mother with a young child or a disabled man stands? Yet this is all too often seen. Older people, tired and irritable from a day’s work, are not angels, either—far from it. Many an argument or an insulting (侮辱的) quarrel breaks out as they feel tired of pushes in the queue and shove (猛推) each other to get on buses. If cities are to remain pleasant places to live in, however, it seems very necessary, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to help, taxidrivers shout at each other as they drive dangerously round corners, bus conductors pull the bell before their passengers have had time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young and strong to do their small part to stop such deterioration (恶化). 28. What can be inferred from the first paragraph? A. A big strong schoolboy never push the elderly for a seat on a bus. B. Older generation have better manners than the young. C. Young persons are sure to offer seat to the elderly. D. Elderly women are often treated politely. 29. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the young men’s argument about offering seat in public? A. Tolerant. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Critical. 30. What can we learn from the last paragraph but one? A. Older people behave worse than the young. B. Older people don’t like taking buses. C. Older people may also have unpleasant behaviors. D. Older people are good at argument and quarrel. 31. Why does the author write this article? A. To tell us that manners nowadays in big cities are nonexistent. B. To scold the persons who have no manners at all. C. To warn us of the seriousness of young men’s lacking good manners. D. To call on the young to improve the situation. D Most Americans are worried about new technology. They are concerned that machines, including robots, will take over work now done by humans. These findings come from a new report by the Pew Research Center of Washington D. C. About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew said automation will increase income inequality between the rich and the middle class and poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy for humans. And only 25 percent expect more jobs to come from automation,” Pew said. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Harvard University in Massachusetts. His talk centered on the uncertain future facing young people. “Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like self-driving cars and trucks.” Zuckerherg told the graduates. Zuckerberg said young people had better launch(发起)projects that will bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 30000 people worked to put a man on the moon, and millions of people built the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years. 32. Chinese idioms, mainly consisting of four Chinese characters, have been appealing to those absorbed in the Chinese language because they are an indispensable part of Chinese culture. The benefits of learning them can be listed as follows. First, with many of Chinese idioms widely used in our daily life, having a good knowledge of them contributes to better understanding both spoken Chinese and written Chinese. Second, they usually possess vivid and profound meanings, making what you try to convey more convincing. As far as I am concerned, I have a preference for the interesting stories behind some of the Chinese idioms. Not only are they interesting, but also they tend to teach some wisdom, which helps me a lot. I_sincerely_hope_you_can_learn_them_well. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
