He started at midnight.‎ Just after 2 a.m., the group that Dad was in charge of went for coffee. There was a machine that always had to be operated and he said, “It's okay. You guys all go and I'll work it.”‎ The machine would move quickly, periodically (周期性地) and for one moment Dad made a mistake — he didn't pay attention, and it struck him in the head. The workers rushed and cut the base of the machine and transported it with him in the ambulance but father died on the way.‎ In the middle of this ordeal (苦难), a spokesperson for the hospital asked my mother if they could take one of my father's eyes — that they had a person waiting for it. To my surprise, my mother nodded.‎ Years later, in the late summer of 2008, I was at the Woodlawn Cemetery (公墓)‎ ‎ where my father's body rests. As I finished praying and stood, a man from behind me said,“How are you now, Frank?”‎ I quickly thought, knowing only the family, and his friends and coworkers called him “Frank”, that this man must have known him.‎ As I turned to face him, I replied, “He's my father.”‎ This man, Frank Bazylak, as I would learn later, replied confidently, “I worked with your father for a short time — just over a year — but he made an impact on my life. He was so passionate(热情的), so demanding(苛求的) and yet so giving.”‎ ‎“You know, he wasn't meant to be there that day. But that was Frank,” he said.‎ I'd heard wonderful stories about father from family and from friends, but four decades later and from a stranger, there in the cemetery(墓地), this ...after all of that time ... and there ... beautiful!‎ ‎21.According to the text, the author's father died in an accident in ________.‎ A.the summer of 1968 B.the autumn of 1968 C.the summer of 2006 D.the autumn of 2006‎ ‎22.It can be learned from the text that the author's father was ________.‎ A.stubborn but kindhearted B.optimistic and passionate C.kindhearted and passionate D.generous and optimistic ‎23.We can learn from the text that ________.‎ A.bacon and eggs were the father's favorites B.the mother was strong facing the father's death C.the father was on his duty when he died suddenly D.the father died in hospital because of treatment failure B The way we do things round here Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “We're kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.‎ So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language ‎ and by that I don't just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.‎ Some of these differences may be only on the surface — dress, food and hours of work — while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate (气候), while getting on with business.‎ Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality (准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and sometime in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.‎ ‎24.The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought ________.‎ A.the American bank didn't think much of him B.the American bank might hire another person C.it's difficult to get used to American culture D.it's easy to misunderstand Americans ‎25.The word “highlights” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.‎ A.encourages B.helps to narrow C.increases D.draws attention to ‎ ‎26.According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?‎ A.Ask the native people for help. B.Understand and accept them. ‎ C.Do things in our own way. D.Do indepth research.‎ C ‎ The UK Young Scientist of the Year award has been won by a young woman for the first time and she is from Northern Ireland. Hannah Eastwood, 18, from Loreto College in Coleraine, explored how chromium (铬) could be removed from drinking water, allowing running water to be purified (净化) and reused for industry.‎ Professor Brian Cox, one of the judges for the National Science and Engineering Competition, said it was “wonderful to see such interest and effort” on science.“It's left me hugely excited about the future of science in the UK, with promising young scientists such as Hannah,” he said.‎ Hannah said she was “excited” but still in shock.“This is an unbelievable opportunity to be an ambassador(代表) for science and to inspire young people,”she said.‎ The competition was open to 11 to 18yearolds from across the UK. B.To add something useful to water.‎ C.To reduce water use in industry. D.To prevent water from being polluted.‎ ‎28.How does Hannah Eastwood feel about her winning the award?‎ A.Excited and interested. B.Excited and shocked. ‎ C.Encouraged and proud. D.Worried and confused.‎ ‎29.According to Sir John Beddington, who would play an important role in facing the future global challenges?‎ A.Political leaders. B.Technical workers. ‎ C.Teachers and students. D.Scientists and engineers.‎ ‎30.Why did Sir John Beddington think the competition is very important?‎ A.It attracts the best students. D.It encourages people's creative thinking.‎ 第二节:七选五阅读(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并将答案填写在答题卷上标号的相应位置,选项中有两项是多余选项。‎ Question: The moment I walked onto the stage, I was unable to sing at all.
