Many look down at their smart phones instead of looking at the traffic light. One of them might step into traffic and could get hit by a car. Now Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, a Dutch town, plans to fix the problem. The plan is to add traffic lights on the ground. When walkers are looking down they might see them. Strips (条状) of lights were put into the ground. They use LED lights, in which electricity moves through a crystal (水晶). As the electricity moves, light is on. The “light lines” change the color at exactly the same time as the traffic lights above them. People look down when they look at their phones. They might notice the lights in the ground and then they will know the traffic light has changed color. Schools in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk near the light lines are excited because they are hoping the light lines will make students safer. In the U.S., “distracted walking” is a serious problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5376 people were killed by cars while walking in the U.S. in 2015. The year before, 4884 died this way. Pamela Lampitt is a lawmaker in New Jersey. Last year, she introduced a bill(议案) about walking and using smartphones. She wants to protect people from getting hurt. The bill would have made it illegal to walk and text at the same time. She says walkers who look down at their phones cause a danger to themselves and drivers on the road. 25.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.People often break traffic rules. B.The cases of traffic accidents are increasing. C.Using smartphones in the street is dangerous. D.Walkers should watch out when crossing the street. 26.What do we know about “light lines”? D.They change their color based on traffic lights. 27.What do schools in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk think of “light lines”? A.They are safe. B.They are useful. C.They are dangerous. D.They are interesting. C Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho. It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. It’s completely insipid so you needn’t worry about any taste. It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention. The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble (泡状物) or a unit of bubbles hasn’t been decided yet, but it costs about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months. Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. I’m Mr. Stevens and I’m sure I’ll learn all your names in no time.” He walked around the class handing out math books. When it was done, he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared back. “What are you waiting for? Get started?” he said. We looked at him----confused. Wasn’t he going to teach us? “Is there something wrong with your ears? You’re not all deaf, are you?” One brave boy at the back of the class asked what we all wanted to know. “Mr. Stevens, aren’t you going to teach us?” “Rubbish!” Mr. Stevens replied, “You’re smart kids. Open your books and get down to it. If you have any trouble or any questions, raise your hand, and I’ll come to help you.” My friend Paul and I exchanged glances and opened our books to the first chapter. A competition began.
