That special scent (气味) is like no other, and the moment it meets your nose, it’s as if you’ve been transported back to second grade. Researchers tell us that special scents can bring back powerful memories. On the farm, every season has its own set of scents and memories, but I think the most memorable scents belong to summertime. To me, childhood summer memories come flooding back the moment I smell new-mown (刚刚割过草的) grass. In my mind’s eye, I can see my grandfather mowing the farmland. I can hear him calling Rocky--- his dog --- and I can see her run to him along driveway with joy. The scent of potato salad takes me back to my family reunions --- tables full of delicious foods and surrounded by crowds of relatives. I can hear my great aunts singing around the piano; I can hear my uncle directing the activities. Even something as ordinary as the scent of newly-washed clothes can take me back to my childhood summers. My grandmother taught me to hang clothes on the clothesline, along with the little time-saving tricks for keeping clothespins (晾衣夹). After we’d finished the washing, we’d go pick wildflowers to dry for winter. And, to me, summer smells like toast (烤面包). As a child, my favorite summertime breakfast was several pieces of almost-burned toast, prepared by my grandmother. While the toast was still hot, she’d spread a lot of cream on it. And I would sit in her kitchen and drink milk and listen to the joyful jokes of my grandparents as I enjoyed the goodness of the summer and the sunshine and --- yes--- the scent of slightly burned toast. 11. What can the writer remember when smelling potato salad? A. Grandfather calling Rocky the dog. B. Great Aunts singing around the piano. C. Mother teaching him to hang clothes. D. Grandmother preparing toast for the writer. 12. What did the author use to do most probably? A. get together with relatives. B. mow the farm land. C. help grandfather wash clothes. D. plant flowers with grandmother. 13. What is probably the best title of the text? A. Family Reunion Memories B. Beautiful Memories of a Child C. Best Loved Toast by Grandmother D. The Sweet Scent of Summer Memories B Are straws (吸管) the new plastic bags? They are the latest single-use plastic item getting increased attention as an often unnecessary tool that ends up blocking waterways, seas and beaches. A video that spread in 2015 of a sea turtle getting a bloody straw removed from its nose helped limit plastic straws in many cities, states, countries and businesses. Straws are certainly not the only goal of lawmaking hoping to reduce the 8 million tons of plastic entering the ocean each year, but they are being singled out for blame (责备) by a growing number of businesses, cities and countries. “Plastic straws can be the gateway, the beginning to raise awareness or open your eyes about single-use plastic,” says Dianna Cohen, CEO of the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In April, Britain announced a ban on the sale of plastic straws, and Taiwan in China announced a ban on straws, plastic bags and cups earlier this year. The European Union is considering a ban on 10 different single-use plastic items, and in June the Indian prime minister announced India would ban all single-use plastic by 2022. During the International Coastal Cleanup, a day in September when communities around the world head out to clean up beaches, 3 million straws have been collected over the past five years, says Nicholas Mallos, director of the Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas program. “Plastic has been found everywhere from coastlines to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and even in the Arctic Ocean,” says Mr. Mallos, adding that research shows that plastic affects more than 800 species of sea animals. Jenna Jambeck, the lead researcher of the landmark 2015 report that first quantified the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean, notes that a consumer refusing a straw --- or realizing they are no longer being offered one --- can spread awareness. “Maybe straws aren’t the biggest mass of anything, but they are a lot by count, and they are something we can go about removing fairly easily, but that can bring about the thoughtfulness we’re going for,” says Dr. Jambeck. 14. What can we know from the second paragraph? A. The video is the only result of lawmaking to reduce plastic in oceans. B. The video, in a way, caused the limitation of plastic straws in many places. C. Straws are helping the survival of the sea turtles. D. Straws are the major reason for the ocean pollution. 15. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph? A. Worldwide efforts to ban single-use plastic. B. The popularity of single-use plastic. C. Achievements in environment protection. D. The difficulty in banning plastic straws. 16. The 6th paragraph suggests that ________. A. it is difficult to clean up the oceans completely B. a wider variety of wild animals will be polluted C. plastic pollution has been serious in the oceans D. plastic is a big problem happening everywhere 17. Jenna Jambeck may agree with the following EXCEPT that ______. A. cleaning plastic straws will have a big effect on ocean pollution B. plastic straws lead to only a small part of the ocean pollution C. people should have the awareness of protecting the oceans D. the removal of plastic straws may not be too big a problem for us C New York college students Helen Chen and Siyin Li are only visiting Los Angeles for a few days, but they decided to spend their Sunday afternoon in a line that circles around The Broad, a free modern art museum in downtown Los Angeles. “The minute we booked our trip, we bookmarked The Broad, ” says Ms. Chen. The Broad has welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors since its opening in September 2015. The museum is becoming increasingly popular. The museum’s employees owe (把……归功于) its success to Yayoi Kusama’s work: “Infinity Mirrored Room --- The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away.” “It’s an Instagram-worthy photo for sure,” says Ms. Chen, pointing to a picture on her phone that a friend took in Ms Kusama’s room at The Broad and shared on Instagram. In fact, the hashtag (标签) Yayoi Kusama has 563, 200 posts on the social media site. “The only reason people know about it is because of Instagram,” says Ms. Li. Los Angeles has become a hotbed for Instagram-ready art shows. At the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, visitors can become a part of the show “Tattoo” at the on-site tattoo shop. The show “Happy Place,” with the slogan (口号) “Capture your happy,” booked out weeks in advance for its picture-perfect rooms and cheese sandwiches. The art world is divided on this. Some observers believe that it has reawakened the interest of young people in museums and increased necessary ticket sales, while others say seeing art through Instagram “likes” is disrespectful to the work, and threatens the value of other artwork that is less attractive in photo. “The power of Instagram to get people in the door is so attractive to museums. They may think, ‘Okay, that’s what works, Why are we not doing more of that?’ ” says Philip Kennicott, senior art and architecture critic (评论家) for The Washington Post. “But there are a lot of other works in the museum that are maybe not as Instagrammable. Are young visitors going to see those kinds of works? Increasingly, I’m doubtful about that.” 18. What can be predicted about Ms. Chen and Ms. Li’s trip to The Broad? A. It will involve a long wait. B. It will be expensive. C. It will be quite relaxing. D. It will be boring. 19. How did Ms Chen learn about “Infinity Mirrored Room”? A. From a photo shop. B. While taking with a friend. C. From an online service. D. While enjoying Yayoi Kusama’s work. 20. What does the word “this” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to? A. the Broad B. the Instagram-ready art show C. the tattoo shop D. the picture-perfect room 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) A group of architects, designers, urbanists and creative technologists collectively known as Umbrellium has developed a modern take on the pedestrian (行人) crossing, a device called the Starling Crossing. __21___. The Starling Crossing was temporarily (暂时地) placed recently in South London. __22__. The network is able to recognize pedestrians, cyclists and cars. Then the Starling Crossing works out the location and speed of each tracked road user and sees their next move. The road surface in the area has been covered with computer-controlled LEDs that can be seen from all angles (角度) in daylight or after dark. ___23___. The pedestrian crossing can be programmed to only appear when it finds someone approaching --- during times of the day when there aren’t many people around, for example --- or can expand its width to accommodate increased foot traffic when the work day finishes. When it’s time for someone to cross the road, unbroken stop markings appear across the road, signaling oncoming cars to stop: The crossing then appears and pedestrians move over to the other side of the road. ___24___, the Starling Crossing creates a large visual buffer area (可视缓冲区) so that nearby drivers and cyclists can realize the situation. The system can even work out drivers’ blind spots by mapping out a hidden pedestrian’s expected route across the road. ____25____. But it certainly looks like an interesting idea that could work with existing traffic management technologies to help bring the pedestrian crossing into the 21st century. A. The whole area is monitored by cameras that feed pictures to a network. B. If a child unexpectedly runs onto the road, C. These days, many students have iPads and think it’s fashionable to use it. With an iPad, We can listen to music, watch videos, download a lot of learned materials but read them on the screen. Apparently, it can be helpful to our studies, especially for English listening. Some students, however, bring their iPads to class and listen to music on earphones, that makes teachers and other students greatly annoying. What’s worse, some of them even wasted time in class playing video games. In my opinion, as students, we should make well use of iPads to help achieve academic success. The classroom is a place for students to study, and therefore good concentration is needed for us to study. Beside, the school should be set rules for the students to use iPads properly. 46.disastrous 47.related 48.as 49.coming 50.where 51.worsened 52. gives 53.loss 54.the 55.or 短文改错: 1. senior前加 a 2. it---them 3. learned---learning 4. but---and 5. that---which 6. annoying---annoyed 7. wasted---waste 8. well---good 9.
