At that time, most advice on nutrition came from North American and European countries. Nutritionists suggested foods that were common and worked well for people who lived in these nations.‎ For example, they told poor Indian women to eat more meat and eggs and drink more orange juice. But Lakshmi knew this advice was useless in a country such as India. People there didn't eat such foods. They weren't easy to find. And for the poor, such foods were too expensive.Lakshmi knew that for the program to work, it had to fit Indian culture. So she decided to adjust the nutrition program. She first found out what healthy middle class people in India ate. She took note of the nutrients (营养物)available in those foods. Then she looked for cheap, easy-to-find foods that would provide the same nutrients.‎ She created a balanced diet of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and grains. These foods were cheap and could be cooked with simple equipment. Her ideas were thought unusual in the 1960s. For example, she insisted that a diet without meat could provide all major nutrients. Now we know she was right. But it took her continuous efforts to get others to finally accept her diet about 50 years ago. Because of Lakshmi's program, Indian children almost doubled their food intake. And many children who would have been hungry and ill grew healthy and strong.‎ ‎25. Why did Lakshmi think European nutritionists, advice was useless?‎ A. It worked well for European people. ‎ B. It suggested too many foods for Indians.‎ C. It was not practical in India that time. ‎ D. It included foods that didn't exist in India.‎ ‎26.Lakshmi studied healthy middle class people's diet in order to        .‎ A.find out nutrients in their food          ‎ B. learn about Indian culture C.know about their eating habits            ‎ D. write a report on food nutrients ‎27.Lakshmi's balanced diet was considered unusual because people thought _________.‎ Athose foods were too cheap                 ‎ B.it should include some meat C. it provided all major nutrients                ‎ D.it enabled kids to grow healthy ‎28.What can we infer about Lakshmi? ‎ A.She came from a rich family.             B. She disliked middle class people.‎ C. She worked with European nutritionists.        D. She was a determined scientist.‎ ‎ C As a nation of animal lovers, Britain has been rocked by a study that at least ten million pets suffer mental or physical stress. ‎ Two million dogs are left alone daily for longer than recommended and 750,000 rabbits are fed too little grass, at least three million dogs and cats have never been vaccinated(接种疫苗), the research indicates. Shocked animal welfare campaigners are calling on owners to give their pets urgent attention. A spokesman for animal charity said, “We know that owners love their pets, but many do not understand what their pets need.” The charity’s survey is the first to measure the well-being of Britain’s 12 million cats, eight million dogs and 1.7 million pet rabbits. It found that five million cats, four million dogs and more than 700000 rabbits would be suffering mental or physical stress because their owners do not look after them properly. About 2.4 million dogs are mainly fed on leftovers(剩饭), rather than nutritionally balanced dog food. About 1.9 million dogs are left alone each day for more than four hours, even though vets say four hours should be the maximum. Around 15 percent of owners believe it is acceptable to leave a dog for eight hours without attention while four percent say dogs can be abandoned for more than ten hours without suffering. The survey also showed the Britain’s cats are overfed, with more than half of owners admitting their cats are overweight. Rabbits are also neglected. In the wild they live in large groups, but 67 percent of pet rabbits live on their own, which creates the risk of boredom and stress. Another spokesman said, “Our report reveals that there is much work to do to raise awareness ‎ of what pets need to live healthy and happy lives.” 29.The author has written this article to______. A. explain what pets should eat to keep healthy B. show the present physical and mental situation of pets C. call on people to take good care of their pets D. tell readers what is a good happy life for pets 30. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text? A. Dogs should be left alone for more than eight hours without suffering. B. About 2.4 million dogs are fed on nutritionally balanced dog food. C. Pet rabbits living together creates the risk of boredom and stress. D. More than half of cats in Britain are overfed and overweight. 31. You can read this article in a _______. A. health magazine B. biology textbook C. newspaper advertisement D. book review ‎ D Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation for example. It was my six-year-old son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits(积分) to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had a meeting in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.‎ The next day my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged---okay, ordered them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?‎ ‎ Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal(交易) is something few of us can afford to pass up.‎ I've made a living looking for the best deals and exposing the worst tricks. I have been the consumer(顾客) reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.‎ I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate (犹豫)to spend on a good haircut. It keeps longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.‎ ‎32. Why does the author mention her family’s last vacation?‎ A. To celebrate her son’s winter break from school.‎ B. To show she was always ready to save money.‎ C. To prove the Delta’s service was reasonable.‎ D. To tell an unforgettable family experience.‎ ‎33. What can we infer about the author?‎ A. She tries to make full use of every dollar . ‎ B. She makes a living mainly by writing.‎ C. She is not a good mother or a wife. ‎ D. She is crazy about cheap products.‎ ‎34. What does the underlined word “tightfisted” mean ?‎ A. generous with time. B. mean with money. C. being excited. D. feeling ashamed.‎ ‎35.
