My dad died when I was fourteen and I had to go out to work to try to support the rest of my family. To begin with, I sold ice cream in the street; then I got a job selling cloth door-to-door. After that, I started traveling all over the island selling things to people and slowly I started getting ideas about what kind of products the different markets wanted. “When I was twenty-one, I left my wife and two children at home and moved to Jakarta to set up my own business, selling all kinds of machines, particularly propellers (螺旋桨) for boats. There are over thirteen thousand islands in Indonesia, so there’s a huge market for that kind of thing. Business was increasing and I could finally afford to bring my family over to join me. “The only real problem I have now is who’s going to take control of the business when I retire. C When men get together, they seldom talk about their feelings or inner thoughts. However, they talk about a lot, like their newest computer, how to repair their car, or even business. Talk might move to the best place to find fish or women, jump to computer games, then continue to the sport of the season. They also like to tell jokes each other and spend a fair amount of time playing one-up and boasting (吹牛). Men seldom call each other to chat. Some men, either out of nervousness or ignorance(忽略), spend most of the time talking about themselves, often appearing to brag about their achievements or talk endlessly about their problems or work. Even the quietest man talks to his woman when love is new. When women get together, they talk about feelings and relationships, their work and their family. They enjoy talking but also want the give and take of talk, then listen. Women often call each other to chat. Conversation is an important part of most women's 1ives. As relationships progress, however, many a man turns on the television and forgets how to talk. This raises anger and cry from his woman partner who says, “You never talk to me anymore.” When the woman starts talking about her favorite subjects: feelings, family, relationships, friends and her work, many men lose interest or bring the conversation back to themselves. Pretty soon, the man is back to staring at the television each night, wondering where his relationship has gone. The woman is talking to her friends, mom, sister, or neighbor, often about that very relationship and how she is hurting. 9. What can we know about men from the first two paragraphs? A.They like to talk about practical(实际的,实用的) matters. B.They are willing to expose (暴露) their inner thoughts. C.They prefer to take adventurous travels. D.They often call each other to chat about work. 10. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “brag about” in Paragraph 3? A.Show off B.Dream about. C. Look forward. D.Care for. 11. What is the same topic in both men's and women's talk? A.Family. B.Work. C.Friends. D.Jokes. 12. What is the best title of this passage? A.How a man makes a good impression to a woman. B.Good relationship between men and women. C.Talking, the women's main tool in communication. D.Men talk; women talk; do they talk together? D With only about 1000 pandas left in the world China is desperately(极度地拼命地) trying to clone (克隆)the animal and save the endangered species(濒危物种). That's a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researcher has been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark.” Dr. Duane Kraemer a professor in Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine and a pioneer in embryo (胚胎) transfer(移植) work and related procedures says he salutes the Chinese effort and “It's a worthwhile project and it's very much like what we're attempting here at Texas A&M-to save animals from extinction.” Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs embryos semen (精子) and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen (氮) to save the animals from extinction. If certain species should become extinct ,there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future. This week Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure of Chinese panda- cloning project could take from three to five years to complete. “The nuclear transfer(核移植) of one species to another is not easy and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem ” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy. It takes a long time and it's difficult but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. 13.The aim of “Noah's Ark” project is to ________. A.implant embryo into a host animal B.salute the Chinese efforts in saving pandas C.save endangered animals from extinction D.introduce cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit 14.How long will the Chinese panda-cloning project take according to the passage? A.1 year B.3 to 5 years. C.2 years D.25 years. 15.What could be the major problem in cloning pandas according to Professor Kraemer? A.Lack of available panda eggs. B.Lack of host animals.
