Pastry chefs (面包师) from around the country handed out samples of their very best work. Chef Scott Green, a chocolate sculptor, impressed the attendees at the show. Not only did he bring his work for all to see,but he also made chocolate sculptures right then and there.‎ Green talked to TFK about his job as a chocolate sculptor. He explained that he thinks of himself as an artist who just happens to work with chocolate rather than wood or stone. “I hive been around chocolate so long that it isn’t chocolate anymore,” he said. To learn more about the job of a chocolate sculptor, read on.‎ TFK: What was the hardest thing that you have ever carved, and what was it made of?‎ GREEN: In 2017, I did the U.S. Pastry Championship, and I had to carve ft castle out of white chocolate for the competition. I didn’t have a lot of experience, and white chocolate is hard to carve. That was the hardest thing I have ever carved.‎ TFK: How long does it take to make an average sculpture?‎ GREEN: For me, it takes a couple of days. Most of that time is getting all the pieces ready. The easiest part is gluing it all together. Chocolate is used for glue. It holds together very well.‎ TFK: How much chocolate do you use per sculpture?‎ GREEN: It depends on the sculpture. For a show piece, I maybe use 20 to 60 pounds of chocolate. You have to be really strong to lift it. I always ask for help.‎ TFK: Is it easier to work with sugar or chocolate?‎ GREEN: They are very different. Generally speaking, it is easier to work with chocolate. Chocolate likes being poured into molds (模具), and it sets at room temperature. Sugar is much more fragile. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Like her mother and her grandmother before her," mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and reuses her plastic bags.‎ Mom creates a kind of harmonious relationship with wildlife in her yard, She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to avoid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it is likely that they will be knocked down by a family of raccoons, Spiders that make their way into the house and are caught in juice glasses will be set loose in the garden.‎ I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for dandelions (蒲公英) to fly in the wind; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn't need to lecture. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came mercy and an instinct for protection.‎ I am slowing down and it isn't because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is out of my concern for the planet itself. I've begun to save glass jars and reuse packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other in the trees above my house.‎ Last summer, in the company of my son and daughter, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I ate the first while sitting on my low wall with dirt on my hands. Warm from the sun, it burst on my tongue with a sweetness I immediately, wanted to share with my mom.‎ ‎28.Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother's Day?‎ A. Because Mother's Day falls shortly after Earth Day.‎ B. To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.‎ C. To stress that all the, older women in her family are environmentalists.‎ D. Because her mother shows her how to be friendly to nature on Mother S Day.‎ ‎29.We can infer from the text that .‎ A. the author s mother knows how to get rid of the wildlife in her yard B. the author 'S mother used to lecture her to protect the environment C. the author realizes that she should teach her children by example as well D. the author believes that only by learning to slow down can we enjoy life ‎30.What can be learned from the last paragraph?‎ A. The author is proud of her sweet tomatoes.‎ B. The author really appreciates her mother's teaching.‎ C. Planting tomatoes is a way of protecting environment.‎ D. The author likes eating tomatoes planted by herself.‎ ‎31.The writer's attitude towards her mom's behavior changed in the order of .‎ A. negative— understanding —supportive B. supportive— doubtful—negative C. understanding —critical—supportive D. doubtful—critical— positive D ‎ A mystery surrounds my grandmother’s collection of salt cellars (盐瓶). No one in the family seems to know when she started collecting them, or exactly how many she had.‎ My grandmother died just over two years ago. At 91, she had spent 30 years without her right leg, which was removed due to cancer the year I was born. She was a poet, an artist, a food lover and a salt cellar collector. The funny thing about the salts, as she called them — I never once heard her say salt cellar — was that although everybody knew they were her hobby and everyone was always searching for them at yard sales or in stores, nobody seemed to know what they meant to her and they just wanted to make her happy. Grandma kept her salts in a dark wooden corner display case in the living room. Since her death the case has remained exactly as she left it. Grandpa tries his best to preserve his memories of her just as they are.‎ Now I am collecting, too. Collecting memories about my grandmother’s hobby, a way she spent her time. And as I hold one of them in my hand, I picture her holding it in her hand on the day ‎ she got it. She is smiling. My mother and her two sisters all have small collections, but my mother admits that she was more interested in finding salts to send to Grandma.‎ Grandma once wrote a poem titled “When April Comes”. The poem contains the line, “When April comes and I am not around, remember me when daffodils are found.” Now, Grandpa is working on a poem with the line, “April came and you were not around”.‎ But she was, somehow. She was there in the memories left behind by her possessions.‎ ‎32.It can be inferred from the text that the author’s family_______ .‎ A. are very proud of their interesting family history B. value the wonderful poems Grandma wrote C. are much influenced by Grandma’s interest D. know much about grandparents’ love ‎33.In writing the text, the author expressed ________.‎ A. her love for her grandma B. her desire to collect more salt cellars C. her sadness at losing her grandma D. her curiosity about her grandma’s possessions ‎34.The underlined part “her possessions” in the last paragraph refers to ________.‎ A. Grandma’s experience B. Grandma’s strong will C. Grandma’s talent D. Grandma’s hobby ‎35.What would be the best title for the text?‎ A. Grandma’s Salt Cellar Collection B. The Mystery of Grandma’s Salt Cellars C. Grandparents’ Lifelong Devotion D. A Family’s Collection History 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ The Science of Risk-Seeking Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 36. Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work?‎ The reason why any of us take any risks al all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 37. As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.‎ So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it.38.‎ No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 39. To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.‎ ‎40. For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.‎ As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.‎ A. It all depends on your character.‎ B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.‎ C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.‎ D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.‎ E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.‎ F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.‎ G.
