But this is really happening, and it's a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. It’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.‎ Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery. The first 12 test subjects all men, already have started the study.‎ Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating drinking and exercising. They also answer nature's call and shower but it's unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.‎ ‎"Daily routine showering getting dressed eating exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them," says the website adding that there is “continuous data collection, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants' feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tilted (倾斜) down six degrees which imitates(模仿)conditions in space.‎ Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.‎ The high $18, 500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you're an American who really needs the money, you probably can't afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus they need strong German-speaking skills. Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55 in good health, with normal body weight.‎ ‎24.What are participants expected to do during the study?‎ A.Report their feelings regularly. B.Complete their daily routines in bed.‎ C.Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees. D.Record their physical responses every day.‎ ‎25.What data about the participants will the researchers collect?‎ A.The changes in their weight. B.Their behaviors to weightlessness.‎ C.The ways they do their daily D.Their physical and mental reactions.‎ ‎26.What will be a challenge for the participants?‎ A.The language skills they need. B.The difficulty meeting family.‎ C.The possibility that they feel dull. D.The slow discovery of their health.‎ ‎27.The requirements for potential participants are______.‎ A.challenging for Americans B.tailored(订做) to thin persons C.easy for the youth to satisfy D.suitable for most people C Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.‎ Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.‎ But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in setting down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.‎ ‎28. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?‎ A. Its business culture. B. Its small population.‎ C. Its geographical position. D. Its favorable climate.‎ ‎29. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?‎ A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. One out of five people got rich.‎ C. Almost everyone gave up. D. Half of them died.‎ ‎30. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?‎ A. They found the city too crowded. B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.‎ C. They were unable to stand the winter. D. They were short of food.‎ ‎31. What is the text mainly about?‎ A. The rise and fall of a city. B. The gold rush in Canada.‎ C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson.‎ D How to say hello in Japanese depends on(取决于) when you say it. This is very much like different greetings(问候语) used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We don’t get formal with our close friends. We seldom greet them with “Good morning “ or “Good evening”. A “Hi” is enough.‎ Although the most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konnichiwa”, it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. It is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for “Konnichiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon,” and I am sure you wouldn’t like greeting people with a “Good day” at any time, and neither do Japanese like saying “Konnichiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.‎ So what to do? Let’s do it the way the Japanese do. Use “Ohaiyo Gozaimasu” for “Good morning”, “Konnichiwa” when it’s noon and “Konbanwa” to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things differ when you are on the phone. Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually similar to saying “Hello” over the phone, because one hardly ever uses “Good morning” or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. Next time, I’ll tell something about my life in Japan.‎ ‎32. What is the best title for this passage?‎ A. How to greet close friends in Japanese. B. How to greet people in Japanese.‎ C. Some difference between English and Japanese. D. How to say hello in Japanese.‎ ‎33. Japanese people greet each other by saying “______” in the afternoon.‎ A. Konnichiwa B. Ohaiyo Gozaimasu C. Konbanwa D. A.Moshi, Moshi ‎34. In the writer’s opinion,______.‎ A. Japanese people don’t like using “Konnichiwa” as a greeting for the whole day.‎ B. people don’t need to be polite to their close friends C. Japanese people are very friendly to each other D. Japanese culture is similar to American culture ‎35. We can learn from the passage that the writer_______.‎ A. lived in Japan for some time B. is working in a radio station now C. knows both Japanese and Chinese D. is from Britain 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多于选项。 ‎ Rise and Shine All Day Making these easy tasks part of your morning schedule will improve your nutrition, energy, and mood today—and beyond.‎ Stretch in bed Try this even before you open your eyes.
