The crash is a life-changing one for her. Because of the crash, she’s blind in one eye, lost her sense of smell, lost some of her hearing, lost the ability to create tears, and she cannot fall asleep naturally. “Initially, I thought I would not be defeated but clearly I was completely wrong. Apart from the medical problems, the hardest part about my life after the car accident was the fact that I was alone.” Jerry said, “Everyone was away at college, I wasn’t. I couldn’t drive, couldn’t go to college. My friends who used to hang around with me were there for me at first, but after a while they stopped coming by.” “I looked up on her Facebook page, and she said on there: Can anybody please hang out with me today? I don’t have any friends.” recalled Jerry’ mother, Ketty. In time, Jerry and her mother teamed up with the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make a video. They want to get the point across that texting and driving can have life-transforming consequences. In the video Jerry appealed to drivers not to text and drive. She admitted she was checking and sending messages via her phone when she crashed her car into the back of the truck. “Don’t text your loved ones when you know they’re driving,” said Jerry’ mother. “It can change their lives forever.” “If you get a text, don’t look at it,” Jerry said. “It’s not worth it.” 21. What did Jerry suffer most after the car accident? A. She couldn’t drive B. She couldn’t go to college C. She lost her friends. D. She lost some of her sight and hearing 22. The car accident happened because______. A. Ketty was driving carelessly B. Jerry was texting while driving C. the truck in front stopped suddenly D. the truck turned left without warning 23. The video(mentioned in the passage) was made to ______. A. call on people to be kind to accident victims B. expose the truth of the car crash to the public C. warn people not to use phones while driving D. ask people to be careful while crossing the road B What is great art? On the one hand, we can all see that great art is old art which is called great. But how do we know which art of our own times is great, and which will be forgotten? And who decides? These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time. When Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were writing, for example, most critics considered them as hack (平庸的) writers with little or no literary ability. Similarly, Van Gogh and many of the other Impressionist painters of the late nineteenth century were not allowed to participate in events involving what were thought to be the "real" painters of the time, and often they were very poor. Yet today their paintings often sell for millions of dollars, while those so-called "real" painters are now barely remembered. So what makes great art? Can, for example, rock music be great art? Music videos? Cartoons and comics? Those who call themselves critics of the fine arts often have been the last to recognize great art in the past, and we can probably expect this to be the situation today. Critics often don’t recognize great art because they tend to be prejudiced against what is popular. Popular works, whether they are novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art. But popularity, it seems to me, is one of the three signs that a present-day work of art may come to be thought of as great. The other two are that it is groundbreaking, and that it is inherently (内在的) beautiful. Many works have one or even two of these qualities of being popular, unusual, and beautiful. But having all the three often will mean that a work of art will someday be seen to be great, though it may take a good spoonful of time, such as a century or two, to know for sure. 24. The author used the first paragraph to__________. A.arouse the reader’s curiosity and lead to the following paragraphs B.introduce some real painters to the readers C.introduce the questions the writer wants to answer D.explain what kind of art will become popular 25. The author used the examples of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Van Gogh to show________. A.these masters’ works have some shortcomings B.these masters wouldn’t have been so successful without the critics C.truly beautiful works of art are never understood when first created D.great masters are often not acknowledged while they were alive 26. According to the passage, great works _______. A.may be presented in different forms B.are usually thought highly of by critics C.are thought valuable because of their sale price D.will become valueless if they’re not accepted C Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚) in which students either sink or swim, the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform (符合) to a stereotype(模式化形象), a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”. The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being faded by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with specifically “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern style in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote. Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported. 27. What does Tony Little say about the British education system? A. It makes girls less emotional than boys. B. It fails more boys than girls academically. C. It doesn’t give boys the attention they need. D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls. 28. According to Abigail James, boys can do better in single-sex schools because ________. A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in B. boys focus more on their lessons without being disturbed C. teaching quality is relatively higher than in mixed schools D. teaching can be designed according to the characteristics of boys 29. Which of the following is NOT the typical feature of boys? A. Boys have acute vision. B. Boys like being in charge. C. Boys like “hands-on” lessons. D. Boys like physical activities. 30. What is mainly talked about in the passage? A. Problems boys may have in mixed schools. B. Boys’ physical and mental growth in school. C. Advantages of single-sex education for boys. D. Boys’ disadvantages over girls in mixed schools. 第一节 (共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Roles are social responsibilities or part that people play in different situations.
