I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago.I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year.I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me.I had just turned 30 years old,and I'd been married for a year.I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't and I wasn't sure what to expect.MacKenzie told me I should go for it.As a young boy,I'd been a garage inventor.I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired.I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me,and finally said,"That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job."That 1ogic made some sense to me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision.Seen in that light,it really was a difficult choice, but finally,I decided I had to give it a shot.I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. C University can be the most sociable time of your life. For most students, social media is the glue that holds packed social diaries together.Facebook will let you know if a game is cancelled,Twitter can promote your DJ set in 140 characters, and your Instagram account will remind you when there are new photos. These tools have made the world increasingly connected, and most students wouldn't consider shunning them at such a sociable stage of their lives. But social media is by no means a requirement at university, and many do without. "I'm a private person and don't feel the need to share everything with everybody I know,"says Caty Forster,20,a student at the University of Manchester, who has never used Facebook or Twitter.Despite social media's benefits,Forster is largely indifferent.Bethany Elgood, 25, stopped using Facebook after she discovered she had developed a bit of an anxiety towards the social media platforms that contain lots of personal details." I quit Facebook when I was 13.I left because, not only was I bored of passively involved in its Newsfeed,I was also experiencing anxiety. To me,Facebook meant clicking and nosing around people's lives. People would ask,"How do you keep in touch with people?" and "Won't you miss out anything important?"I was in agreement with Forster, who says,"I never feel like I'm missing out too much.I don't feel like I'd have anything valuable to share or gain from it." Adrienne Jolly,a careers advisor at UEA,says,"It's hard to prove reliable statistics on social media. But it's generally accepted that social media networks are pretty influential in this process-for better or worse." You might decide quitting social media isn't practical in the long run. However,if its ugly side is bringing you down, why not consider taking leave?By doing so,I gained confidence and a strong connection with reality. 28.The author listed three kinds of social media to prove they ______ . A. are important for him and others like Ca ty B. are frequently used by many university students C. have the power to make students learn more D. should be used by all of the students in universities 29.The underlined word "shunning" in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by" ______ " A. adding B. choosing C. using D. avoiding 30.Why doesn't Bethany use social media? ______ A. She hates to share everything with others. B. She buries herself in the busy studies every day. C. She hopes her personal information is safe. D. She doesn't care what has happened to her friends. 31.What is the attitude of Adrienne Jolly to using social media online? ______ A. She is completely against them. B. She is objective. C. She is completely for them. D. She herself refuses to use them. D Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can't make us tire.It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day. So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired? Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J.A.Hadfield,says,"The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare."Dr.Brill,a famous American scientist, goes even further,He declares,"One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems." 【来源:全,品…中&高*考+网】 What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired?Joy?Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry,a feeling of not being appreciated--those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body. 32.What surprised the scientists a few years ago? ______ A. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue. B. Albert Einstein didn't feel worn after a day's work. C. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood. D.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins. 33.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired? ______ A. Challenging mental work B. Endless tasks C. Unpleasant emotions D. Physical labor. 34.What's the author's attitude towards the scientists' idea? ______ A. He doubts them. B. He agrees with them. C .He argues against them. D. But 1 can hardly make out what exactly she was trying to say. W: Maybe you should call her up. (Text 2) W: Can you help me move the furniture out this afternoon? M: No problem provided that it will not rain by then. (Text 3) W: John, could you take care of my children while I go to the doctor? M: All right. But I have to leave at 1:00. I'm going to a party in the afternoon. W: OK. I'll be back before then. (Text 4) M: Hey, this photocopier looks nice, the X40.【来源:全,品…中&高*考+网】 W: Hmm. A bit expensive. The RX200 looks fast. The actors sing in a special way and use traditional Chinese music in the background. Their faces look interesting too. W: Yeah, it's quite different from Western opera. (Text 6) W: So, you're Olivier, where are you from? M: ~From near Paris, Orleans. W: OK. What are your plans for the future? M: Well, I have just finished high school and I would like to go to a business school. W: I see. Why is that? M: Well, eventually ~I would like to get a job as a lawyer or something like that. W: I see. And what do you do in your free time? M: I'm keen on sport. I like to play tennis and go windsurfing. I also like to take part in plays and act. W: Really! I think we are ready to move on to the next part ... (Text 7) M: Sit down, Miss Bradley. It's something personal, you say? W: Yes. I'm going to get married next month and ~I'm afraid I'd like to leave at the end of the month. M: Really? I'm very sorry to hear that. Do you intend to stop working altogether, then'? W: Oh, no! I'd stay if Terry, that's my boyfriend, weren't a Canadian. He's an engineer. He often says he'd earn far more if he were back in Canada. M: But engineers are quite well-paid here in England. How much does he earn here, then? W: $200 a week. M: That's very poor. You ought to tell him he'd get far more if he came and worked for us. W: Well ... er ... in fact, ~he works here in your factory, Mr Tigers. (Text 8) M: You know what? I have one neighbour that I'm pretty friendly with. He helped me move some furniture last month. W: Oh, ~that was nice of him. M: Yeah, it was. I've helped him, too. The last time he went away, he gave me a key so I could go in and water his plants. W: Neighbours can help each other out like that. M: Yeah, but sometimes it can be a problem too. Last week, he came back late from a party and couldn't find his key. So he knocked on my door at 2:00 a.m. and wanted his key back! W: At 2:00 a.m.? No way! Well, it's a little inconsiderate. Did you complain to him about it'? M: No. I need him to help me move some more furniture next week! (Text 9) W: Good evening. Tonight on Green Talk we have an environmental specialist, Dr Carl Olsen. Welcome, Carl. M: Thank you, Kelly. W: So, Carl, you believe there's nothing wrong with the environment'? M: No, no. I'm not saying there are no problems, but they are not as serious as some environmentalists say. For example, everybody seems to believe that we will run out of fossil fuels. That's nonsense! In fact, the oil age will end not because we will run out of oil, but because we'll be using more of the alternative sources of energy. W: I see. What about pollution? It seems to be a big problem in lots of cities. M: I think the air and water are becoming less and less polluted. Many countries have done a lot to reduce pollution and this has considerably helped solve the problem. (Text 10) W: And now for what to eat at Rudy. It's a small menu, and you can get some of the best soup, all at $1 a bowl. Then there are the sandwiches, not huge, but certainly enough to eat. Pop is the expert there in charge of what goes into them. I had the chicken salad sandwich at $1.50. I don't know what Pop put in it, but it's certainly a lot tastier than any other chicken salad I've ever had. The other sandwich they've got on the menu is the roast beef that looks absolutely out of this world and costs only $2.25, which these days, I'm sure you'll agree, is a real steal. Both sandwiches are served on Rudy's homemade bread, which makes them more special. For those of you who are just a little hungrier, there are beef stew, which is $4, and delicious southern fried chicken at $4.50. ~Both come with salad, and the chicken with French fries.查看更多
