Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off. But is this biological function really contagious, and why do we do it in the first place? Many of us think we open our mouths when we yawn to take in more oxygen, but in fact it appears there is no clear biological reason. A new research suggests it might be because yawning cools the brain down and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your laptop. This might be why we’re more likely to feel drowsy and yawn in warm temperatures. What is clear is that we yawn more when we’re exhausted and ready for a nap, and we can’t control when we do it—once we start, there’s no stopping us! But it’s also true that yawning is a very contagious behaviour. John Drury, a researcher from Sussex University, told the BBC that “dogs yawn when their owners yawn. Animals yawn to each other. It happens whether you want to or not.” His research into this cognitive behaviour found that there is a connection with our social group and how close we are to the people in it. If we identify with the person who exhibits the behaviour, we are likely to copy it too. Other researches by the University of Nottingham in 2017 found similar results. They asked volunteers to watch other people yawn. They found their ability to resist yawning when others around them yawned was limited. And the urge to yawn was increased when people were told they couldn’t. They also found, when using electrical stimulation(刺激), that they were able to increase people’s desire to yawn. These findings, they say, could be useful because it could help treat other conditions like Tourette’s, which involve the same area of the brain. 4. According to the new research, why are we more likely to yawn in warm temperatures? A. Because we need to breathe more oxygen. B. Because we are more likely to feel tired. C. Because we need to make the brain cooler. D. Because we are more likely to feel bored. 5. What does the underlined word “contagious” probably mean? A. Powerful. B. Infectious. C. Similar. D. Influential. 6. What will happen when people are told not to yawn? A. They will have stronger desire to yawn. B. They will immediately stop yawning. C. They will yawn less than before. D. They will yawn more lightly. 7. Where is this text most likely from? A. A novel. B. A diary. C. A magazine. D. A handbook. C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第二段中“A new research suggests it might be because yawning cools the brain down and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your laptop.”(一项新的研究 表明,这可能是因为打哈欠给大脑降温,防止大脑过热,就像笔记本电脑里的风扇一样。) 根据第三段画线词语的下文“ Dogs yawn when their owners yawn, animals yawn to each other. It happens whether you want to or not.”(当主人打哈欠时,狗也会打哈欠,动物 也会彼此打哈欠。 根据最后一段“And the urge to yawn was increased when people were told they couldn’t.”(当人们被告知不能打哈欠时,打哈欠的冲动就会增强。) 故选 A 项。 C The annual award scheme run by the James Dyson Foundation announced the UK national winners of 2020 edition on Thursday. The Tyre Collective will receive £2,000 in prize money to develop a tool that cuts down on pollution by capturing tyres’ particles(微粒). Every time a vehicle moves, micro-plastic from tyres is released—small enough to account for up to 50% of PM2.5 pollution from road transport and 10% of all PM2.5 by 2030. The device invented by the team is fitted to the wheel and uses electrostatics(静电学) to collect up to 60% of all particles, which, once captured, can be recycled for new tyres or used for other applications like 3D printing and soundproofing. A recent research from the Norwegian Institute for Air Research shows that, over 200,000 tons of micro-plastic from tyres end up in oceans and other remote areas of the world each year. “Roads are a very significant source of micro-plastic to remote areas, including the oceans.” lead researcher Andreas Stohl told The Guardian. According to DEFRA, tyre-wear accounts for nearly 50 percent of global road transport particulate emissions(排放物) and it is the second largest micro-plastic pollutant in oceans (after single-use plastic). The team is made up of students from the Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. “We are passionate about the environment and trying to make a meaningful impact on society.” they said. And Siobhan Anderson, leader of the Tyre Collective, added, “We’re excited about having the backing of such a prestigious award and we’re looking forward to continuing this journey and developing our innovation further.” 8. What do we know about the collected particles? A. They are polluted. B. They are soundproofing. C. They can be used again. D. They can produce electricity. 9. What contributes to half of global road transport particulate emissions? A. Plastic from tyres. B. Factories in remote areas. C. Poor road conditions. D. Industrial emissions. 10. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The members are from the same school. B. The team will keep working on the invention. C. The team won the most prestigious award. D. The leader will take back the award. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Tyre Production Responsible for Air Pollution B. Less Tyres’ Particles, Better World C. Best Invention to Reduce Ocean Pollution D. Award-Winning Device Reduces Pollution From Tyres 【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段最后一句话中“The device invented by the team is fitted to the wheel and uses electrostatics(静电学) to collect up to 60% of all particles, which, once captured, can be recycled for new tyres or used for other applications like 3D printing and soundproofing.(该团队 发明的装置安装在车轮上,利用静电收集所有颗粒的 60%,一旦捕获,可以回收用于新轮 胎或用于其他如 3D 打印和隔音应用。)可知,收集起来的塑料微粒可以回收循环利用。故 选 C 项。 【9 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“According to DEFRA, tyre-wear accounts for nearly 50 percent of global road transport particulate emissions(排放物)(根据 DEFRA 的数据,轮胎磨损占全球道 路运输颗粒排放的近 50%)”可知,轮胎磨损产生的塑料微粒几乎占全球公路交通产生的 微粒排放物的一半。故选 A 项。 【10 题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“…and we’re looking forward to continuing this journey and developing our innovation further.(我们期待着继续这一旅程,并进一步发展我们的创新。)” 可知,这个团队会继续他们的研发创新。故选 B 项。 【11 题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“The Tyre Collective will receive £2,000 in prize money to develop a tool that cuts down on pollution by capturing tyres’ particles(微粒).(这个轮胎团队将获得 2000 英镑的奖金,用于开发一种通过捕捉轮胎颗粒来减少污染的工具。)”可知,文章主要介绍 了一个团队的新发明,依靠这个发明他们获得了由 James Dyson Foundation 运营的奖项。此 发明可以收集汽车行驶过程中轮胎磨损产生的塑料微粒,进而减少这类污染。因此选项 D“获奖装置减少来自轮胎的污染”符合题意。故选 D 项。 D Jason had trouble making out what his friend was saying in noisy bars, but when he got a hearing test, the result was normal. Recent research may have found an explanation for problems like his, something called “hidden hearing loss”. Scientists have been finding evidence that loud noise damages our hearing in a formerly ignored way. It may not be immediately noticeable, and it does not show up in standard hearing tests. But over time, Harvard researcher Charles Liberman says, “it can rob our ability to understand conversation in a noisy setting. It may also help explain why people have more trouble doing that as they age. And it may lead to constant ringing in the ears.” To understand Liberman’s research, we should know just how we hear. When sound enters our ears, it’s picked up by so-called hair cells. They change sound waves to signals that are carried by nerves to the brain. People can lose hair cells for a number of reasons—loud noise, some drugs or aging—and our hearing degrades(退化) as these hair cells are lost. That loss is what is picked up by a standard test called an audiogram that measures how soft a noise we can hear in a quiet environment. Liberman’s work suggests there’s another kind of damage that doesn’t kill off hair cells, but leads to experiences like Jason’s. The connections between hair cells are called synapses(突触), and a given hair cell has many of them. Animal studies suggest you could lose more than half of your synapses without any effect on how you score on an audiogram. “But it turns out,” Liberman says, “that losing enough synapses damages the message the nerves send to the brain, removing details that are important for selecting conversation out from background noise.” “It’s as if there’s a big screen showing a picture,” he says, “but as more and more of its bulbs go black, it gets harder and harder to realize what the picture shows.” One encouraging indication from animal studies is that a drug might be able to stimulate nerves to regrow the lost synapses, according to Liberman, who holds a stock in a company that is trying to develop such a treatment. 12. Why is the problem called “hidden hearing loss”? A. Because the problem is difficult to notice in a noisy setting. B. Because no causes of the problem have been found. C. Because something deep in the brain causes the problem. D. Because the problem was hardly mentioned before. 13. What are bulbs compared to? A. Audiograms. B. Synapses. C. Hair cells. D. Nerves. 14. Which of the following may Liberman agree with? A. Most aged people have ringing in their ears. B. Loud noise can damage a person’s brain. C. Loud noise affects people’s memory. D. Hidden hearing loss can be treated. 15. The passage mainly tells us that . A. loud sound may affect our hearing in a more unobservable way B. the number of people with hidden hearing loss is increasing C. researchers have found a way to test hidden hearing loss D. people are advised not to work in a noisy environment 【答案】12. It may not be immediately noticeable, and it does not show up in standard hearing tests.”(科学家们一直在寻找证据,证明噪音以一种以前被忽视的方式损 害了我们的听力。 故选 A。 根据第四段的“ ‘It’s as if there’s a big screen showing a picture,’ he says, ‘but as more and more of its bulbs go black, it gets harder and harder to realize what the picture shows.’ ” (就好像有一个大屏幕在显示图片一样,他说,“但是随着越来越多的灯泡变黑,人们就越 来越难以意识到图片所显示的东西。”)可知,大屏幕失去灯泡犹如听毛细胞失去突触。故 选 B。 【14 题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“One encouraging indication from animal studies is that a drug might be able to stimulate nerves to regrow the lost synapses, according to Liberman”(利伯曼说, 动物研究中一个令人鼓舞的迹象是,一种药物可能能够刺激神经再生失去的突触)。 根据第二段“Scientists have been finding evidence that loud noise damages our hearing in a formerly ignored way. It may not be immediately noticeable, and it does not show up in standard hearing tests. But over time, Harvard researcher Charles Liberman says, “it can rob our ability to understand conversation in a noisy setting. ”(学家们一直在寻找证据,证明噪音以一 种以前被忽视的方式损害了我们的听力。它可能不会立即被注意到,也不会在标准听力测试 中出现。但随着时间的推移,哈佛大学的研究员查尔斯·利伯曼说:“在嘈杂的环境中,它 会剥夺我们理解谈话的能力。)以及下文说明了造成这种现象的原因。所以短文主要告诉我 们大声的声音可能会以一种更不可见的方式影响我们的听力。故选 A。 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 Quite a few people choose certain kinds of food to stay slim.
