Oliver has a rare disease, which causes him to struggle with everyday tasks, such as dressing himself. Would she tell her 8-year-old son that he couldn't wear what everyone else got to wear, or could she figure out a way in which he could? She chose the latter, altering (更改) a pair of jeans for him. And with that, the Runway of Dreams Foundation was born. ‎ Scheier started the foundation in 2014 to make adaptive clothing more accessible and fashionable for people with disabilities. As part of its aims, Runway of Dreams Foundation partners with brands to make stylish adaptive clothing lines available to the disabled, creates scholarships for students focusing on adaptive clothing and helps with employment opportunities for people in the disability community.‎ ‎“It is truly unbelievable how one pair of jeans has changed the world,”Scheier said. “Creating adaptive clothing for people with disabilities and trying to make change happen in the fashion industry felt so much bigger than just Oliver or just me. It felt like something that had to happen. The future of fashion is inclusion. We've been dressing different body shapes, and now it's time to dress different abilities. I am so thrilled that Runway of Dreams Foundation really started a movement to make change happen.”‎ ‎“They told my mother that I wasn't going be able to do anything for myself, but I proved them wrong. What people like me can do with a disability is the same as someone who doesn't have one. It might look a little bit different, or a little bit strange, but it can be done. I never opened up a magazine and saw someone that looked like me. So it's good now for disabled young kids to see a model in an ad with a disability,” said Oliver. ‎ ‎21. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? ‎ A. The goals of Runway of Dreams Foundation. ‎ B. The popularity of Runway of Dreams Foundation. ‎ C. How Runway of Dreams Foundation was founded. ‎ D. How Runway of Dreams Foundation raises money. ‎ ‎22. What does Scheier think of Runway of Dreams Foundation? ‎ A. It should focus on normal people.‎ B. It will lead to changes in the fashion industry. ‎ C. It has little influence on disabled people's life. ‎ D. It fails to take fashion designing into consideration. ‎ ‎23. What can we learn from Oliver's words? ‎ A. He never reads magazines. ‎ B. He feels ashamed of himself. ‎ C. He dreams to become a model. ‎ D. He appreciates adaptive clothing.‎ B Speaking, writing and reading are necessary to everyday life, where language is the major tool for expression and communication. Studying how people use language — what words they unconsciously choose and combine — can help us better understand ourselves and why we behave the way we do. ‎ Linguists (语言学家) try to determine what is unique and universal about the language we use, how it is learned and the ways it changes over time. They consider language as a cultural, social and psychological phenomenon. ‎ ‎“Understanding why and how languages differ tells us about the range of what is human,”said Dan Jurafsky, chair of the Department of Linguistics at Stanford. ‎ Stanford linguists and psychologists study how language is interpreted (理解) by people. Even the slightest differences in language use may show the biased (有偏见的) beliefs of the speakers, according to research.‎ For example, a relatively harmless sentence, such as“girls are as good as boys at math,”because of the statement's grammatical structure (结构), suggests that being good at math is more common or natural for boys than girls, the researchers said. Language can play a big role in how we and others see the world, and linguists work to discover how words and phrases can influence us, unknowingly. ‎ People speak about 7,000 languages worldwide. Although there is a lot in common among languages, each one is unique. Jurafsky said it's important to study languages other than our own and how they develop over time because it can help linguists understand what lies at the foundation of humans' unique way of communicating with one another. ‎ Linguists analyze how certain speech patterns influence particular behaviors, including how language can influence people's buying decisions. Jurafsky said. “Understanding what different groups of people say and why is the first step in determining how we can help bring people together.” ‎ ‎24. What does the example mentioned in Paragraph 5 show? ‎ A. Misunderstanding is common in daily life. ‎ B. People should avoid using harmful sentences. ‎ C. Speech patterns can show people's biased beliefs. ‎ D. Some grammatical structures are difficult to understand. ‎ ‎25. What does Jurafsky suggest in Paragraph 6?‎ A. Researching languages. ‎ B. Learning from linguists. ‎ C. Developing good learning habits. ‎ D. Communicating with others frequently.‎ ‎26. What is the main purpose of the text? ‎ A. To show the power of language.‎ B. To give an introduction to Jurafsky. ‎ C. To teach readers how to learn a language. ‎ D. To call on readers to learn more languages. ‎ C Mothers who angrily tell off their children when they step out of line may be making behavior problems worse, according to a study. The study by the London School of Economics (LSE) found that too much shouting and giving severe punishments were producing an opposite result. Ignoring naughty children also appeared to lead to a decrease in discipline standards.‎ Researchers said that “reasoning with children” was more likely to have a positive impact on their behavior at a young age. But the study warned that it was difficult to determine a direct link between one parenting style and its outcomes because of the effect of other causes. ‎ The latest study was based on an analysis of almost 19, 000 children. Data was collected from parents just before their children's first birthdays, and then when they turned three, five and seven. The study, led by Dr Laure De Preux, assessed the impact of various parenting styles on children. ‎ Researchers said,“Particularly excessive (过度 的) shouting, punishing or ignoring a naughty child increases his behavior problems, and only reasoning doesn't negatively impact the child's behavior.” ‎ But the study also showed that a large number of other things such as economic conditions also impacted on children's development. The result suggested that wealthier families were able to create a whole environment that clearly benefited the child beyond simple effect of parenting. It said children in poor households in particular were affected by their mother's parenting styles.‎ ‎“In this group, behavior problems are reduced when mothers read to the naughty children, and increased when mothers shout at them, take treats away, or ignore them,” it said. ‎ It is the latest in a line of recent studies to assess the link between parenting and children's behavior. ‎ Two years ago, a report commissioned (委托) by the Department for Education found that severe and inconsistent discipline in the home was bringing up a generation of young children with anger management problems, poor attention and low levels of learning ability. ‎ ‎27. The underlined part “ step out of line ” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____. ‎ A. lose confidence B. behave badly ‎ C. become excited D. achieve success ‎28. Which may help solve children's behavior problems? ‎ A. Punishing them lightly. B. Talking with them reasonably. ‎ C. Ignoring them once in a while. D. Exercising strict discipline over them. ‎ ‎29. What did the research focus on? ‎ A. How mothers looked at their parenting role. ‎ B. Why many children had behavior problems. ‎ C. How parenting styles affected children's development. ‎ D. Why parents gave their children severe punishments. ‎ ‎30. What do we learn about the report in the last paragraph? ‎ A. Its findings go against those of the LSE's study.‎ B. Its subject is similar to that of the LSE's study. ‎ C. It shows the benefits of strict discipline. ‎ D. It has discovered new problems of children 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入 空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ I was giving my 5-year-old a bath one night when she looked out of the window at our fence and announced, “You know, Mamma, sometimes looking at trees helps you to think.” 31 What a deep observation from a little child. “You are right,” I encouraged. “What are you thinking about?”‎ Lately, there have been a lot of changes going on in my life at work. Once he flew from San Francisco in the U. S.‎ to his hometown in Italy, he had some troubles on his journey. The night before, he stayed up late to deal with some emails, so when he boarded on the plane he decided to have a ‎ sleep. Hours later, he was woken up by some noise and he found the plane had landed. ‎ As he thought he had arrived home, Mr. Scottie got off the plane. He thought he was in Rome. However, the truth was that the plane made a one hour stop to get oil at Kennedy Airport of New York. ‎ Mr. Scottie waited at the airport for some while, but nobody was there to meet him. He thought maybe they were held up by heavy traffic, which was very common in Rome. He decided to give his family a phone call. Unfortunately, he found he had left his cellphone at the hotel in San Francisco. Therefore, he decided to go home by himself. While he was walking in the city, Mr. Scottie found that the old “Rome” had changed a lot. Many old buildings were replaced by high modern ones. He also found that many people spoke English instead of Italian and that many streets were written in English. What made him most surprised was that drivers’ awareness of traffic safety was improved and he hardly found any driver speeding on the road. All cars were driving in line. The condition was widely different from that in the past. He was feeling proud. ‎ Mr. Scottie knew very little English, so he asked a policeman the way to the bus station. Luckily, he happened to meet a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language. Mr. Scottie thanked him, left, quickly found the bus station and got on a bus. He looked outside of the bus window. ‎ Paragraph 1: ‎ After twelve hours’ traveling round on the bus, Mr. Scottie thought to himself that Rome had changed so much that he even failed to find his home.‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ ‎ Paragraph 2: ‎ To get him on a plane back to San Francisco, he was sent to the air‐ port in a police car with sirens (警报) on. ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________‎ ‎1‎-5 C A B C A 6‎-10 A C B B A ‎ ‎11‎-15C A B B. Since COVID-19 has transmitted all over China, I’d like very much to be a volunteer.‎ All our citizens are looking forward to playing a part in fighting against the virus, so am I. Here are some things I can do. First, I can help to clean up our International‎ Student Service ‎Center. I know a clean and tidy environment can stop the virus from transmitting. Then, I’m willing to help take the oversea students’ temperature and urge them to wear their masks properly at the entrance of our sevice center. Besides, I can help give out the masks and notices at the gate of Xiashang Supermarket. What’s more, I’m good at getting along with these oversea students. I have a good command of English so that it’s easy for me to teach them how to wash hands correctly and put the used masks in the special trash bins.‎ To sum up, I believe I can be a qualified volunteer. I will try my best if I’m accepted.‎ Yours ‎ Li Hua 读后续写One possible version: ‎ After twelve hours’ traveling round on the bus, Mr. Scottie thought to himself that Rome had changed so much that he even failed to find his home. The bus driver had to leave work and go home, so he handed Mr. Scottie over to another policeman. Mr. Scottie asked the policeman, “Sir, could you tell me why the police employ so many people speaking English instead of Italian as policemen?”The policeman smiled and said, “I’m sorry to tell you that you are in New York, but not Rome now.”However, Mr. Scottie did not believe he was in New York when he was told so. ‎ To get him on a plane back to San Francisco, he was sent to the airport in a police car with sirens (警报) on. The driver was speeding on the road and didn’t stop even when the red light shined. Seeing how the driver drove on the road, Mr. Scottie was certain that he was in Rome because people in Rome usually drove in that way.“Look,” said Mr. Scottie to the policeman sitting beside him, “I’m sure that I’m in Rome. That’s the way in which people drive.” 选做题参考答
