My teachers recommended that I study economics and statistics as my A-level subjects, but I had my mind set on a life fulfilled by the arts. In fact, I was a victim of a gender stereotype made stronger since birth, that men do science and maths and women do arts or languages. Computer science, technology and physics just did not figure in my teenage world view. Nobody popular in school chose to study those subjects. Reality struck hard when I began attending job interviews and interviews would say: “It’s great that you speak foreign languages, but what else do you do?” Nobody asked my friends who had studied science or technology those questions. A survey recently showed that three of the best-paid jobs for women are in the technology sector. It’s a sector that really can change the world. We must show girls that technology has an effect on every industry out there, from fashion to architecture to journalism. Anybody can learn to code and these days it’s as important as reading and writing. I’ve realized that at university I’d achieved the wrong kind of literacy. Not being able to code limit your impact on the world far more than an ignorance of great literature. Now I have a five-year-old daughter. I don’t want her to blindly follow gender roles the way I did. I want her to know the fact a science or technical degree will not limit her creativity but expand it and broaden her horizons far more than my arts background could. I’m exposing her to Minecraft and apps, which help improve analytical thinking and problem solving skills. I’m hoping that my daughter will discover and accept her potentials in science and want to change the world. 24. What does the underlined phrase “gender stereotype” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Personal learning style. B. Sex characteristic. C. conventional sex concept. D. Profession difference. 25. According to the author, which may be the benefit of learning science? A. Increasing job possibility. B. Winning popularity. C. Improving language competence D. Enriching imagination. 26. How did the author feel for her major choice? A. Satisfied B. Active C. Discouraged D. Regretful. 27. What may be the best title for the text? A. Art or Science, Either is OK B. Good Subjects, Good Future C. Girls, Choose More Wisely D. Catch Chances, Change the World C When I saw my 10-year-old avoiding the dirty plate in the sink or my 8-year-old feeling uncomfortable about the wet sand in her hands, I'm reminded of a time when I was unwilling to get my hands a little dirty. My parents owned a 500-acre farm in Montana to raise animals, such as cows, sheep, horses and so on. It was during the time of new life (a newborn lamb or a calf) that my favorite childhood memory took place. One exceptionally cold day, I was checking on the sheep with my mother when she spied a ewe (母羊)in trouble. The poor thing was trying to deliver her baby lamb and needed our help. My mother calmly held the ewe's head and instructed me to grab hold of the two protruding (突出)legs. I hesitated, and must have had quite a look of panic on my young face. The slimy little things were definitely not something I wanted to touch. But I worked up my courage and wrapped my fingers around them. I can still recall the feel of unexpectedly weak legs and their sharp little hooves as if it happened yesterday. My heart pounded in fear and excitement as I pulled with all my strength. The lamb was delivered safely, and I'd never seen anything so beautiful. I was no stranger to seeing farm animals being born, but to have a hand in it was something I treasured then and will treasure forever. I remember feeling excited with delight to see "my lamb ” being licked clean by her mother, and I'm sure everyone got very tired of hearing me tell and retell my heroic story. Looking back, I'm so glad that I didn't refuse to get my hands dirty. If I had, the wonderful moment and the precious memory would have been lost. 28.What impressed the writer most during her childhood ? A. Her dirty little hands. B. Her parents’ large farm. C. Helping deliver a baby lamb. D. Raising animals on the farm. 29.How did the author feel when she was asked to help a ewe deliver her baby ? A sympathetic. B. rather frightened. C. quite astonished. D. highly delighted. 30.What point does the author try to make in the last paragraph? A. It is not unusual to see a new life coming into the world. B. It is not easy to make up and tell a heroic story in daily life. C. Memories formed during childhood are worth valuing all life long. D. You need to get your hands dirty to experience something precious. 31.What could be the best title for the passage? A. Valuable Life Lesson. B. A Tidy and Clean Child. C. A Ewe Delivering her Baby. D. A Beautiful Newborn Lamb. D Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels. Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception(感知)between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a leading science journal. In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent individuals. When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object. Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians. The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult — estimating the line’s size relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also — estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into East-West differences. In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens; four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely to choose the green one. Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize(使内化)it. But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills. 32. According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to ________. A. more emphasize independent thinking B. always focus more on their surroundings C. focus on the context as well as the object D. think of Westerners as highly independent units 33. We know from the passage that people’s brains will be more active when ________. A. the task is much easier B. the blood flow is tracked C. people begin to choose colors D. the task is more difficult 34. What does Dr Hedden's experiment in Paragraph 4-5 indicate? A. Culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave. B. Easterners and Westerners perceive the world differently. C. People's perception of the world can be changed. D. Americans are better at calculating than the Asians. 35. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. Easterners prefer community spirit to individualism B. East Asian cultures lay more emphasis on independence C. it took over ten years to find out how to improve our brainpower D. Americans will change their habits of perception when they’re in Britain 第一节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。 Why we still need to read Dickens Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens. Many of Dickens’s works still sell well today. 36 As someone who teaches Dickens, the question why we still read him is often in my mind. 37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’s writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type of thing that caused a hit. 38 “But why should we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer i gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said. The question annoyed me for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from the experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences. 39 But these are not exactly the reasons why I read dickens. My search for an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens’s novels”, she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the explanation I had sought for years. Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times. 40__ If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself. A. Then a hand shot up. B. And they are placed on outstanding shelves. C. I know that wasn’t really the reason. D. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels. E. That’s why we still need to read him today. F. That question was never more troubling. G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Whenever Michael Carl, the fashion market director at Vanity Fair, goes out to dinner with friends, he plays something called the “phone stack” game: Everyone 41 their phones in the middle of the table; whoever looks at their device before the check arrives 42 the tab(账单).
