In total, 12 extraordinary teens from Clubs across the county competed for the title. Each candidate was judged on the following: Leadership and service to their Club and community; their life goals and values; moral character; academic success and their public speaking skills during an interview. Cassy walked away with the winning title and a $ 2,000 education scholarship. She said, “When there was no one else to reach out to, I knew I could turn to the staff at the Boys & Girls Club. Without the Club, I wouldn’t have had the strength to continue my studies while my family was homeless. I have come to think of the Boys & Girls Club as not only a place to go to after school, but a shelter and a home away from home. “Cassy is incredibly hard-working and driven,” said Meghan Sweet, Director of Wallingford Boys &Girls Club. “She won’t let her challenges get in the way of her success. The Club has provided her with a second home, while she in turn has helped make the Club the type of warm, welcoming place we strive to provide for all our members. The world needs more young women like Cassy, who prove that anyone who is given a place and an opportunity to develop their potential can become a community leader.” Cassy values the voices of individuals who are homeless. B Dream in Heart On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—a wrinkled little old lady—to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old. After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milk-shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became instant friends. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted, listening to this “ time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class participation. In spare time she had someone hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in some form of athletic activity. She said that extra-curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for friendship and learning. At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “ I’ m sorry I’ m so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “ We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’ re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I’ m eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. It’ s non-optional but that doesn’ t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way the elderly don’ t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose concluded her speech by courageously singing “ The Rose” . She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives. At the year’ s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’ s never too late to be all you can possibly be. 24. Why does the author compare Rose to “ time machine” in Paragraph 2? A. To stress her old age and knowledge of life. B. To describe the close friendship between them. C. To show that she always enjoyed her active life. D. To explain why she took on a challenge in college. 25. Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because ______. A. she was a great football fan B. she was the smartest student C. she tried hard to achieve her dream D. she became more educated than the others 26. We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that ______. A. growing older means growing up B. it takes talent and ability to grow up C. receiving high education helps to be courageous D. one grows older at the same time when he grows up 27. The passage is intended to ______. A. provide an example for the elderly B. discuss how to grow up quickly C. tell the importance of attending college D. inspire the readers to live up to lives C As cultural symbols go, the American car is quite young. The Model T Ford was built at the Piquette Plant in Michigan a century ago, with the first rolling off the assembly line(装配线) on September 27, 1908. Only eleven cars were produced the next month. But eventually Henry Ford would build fifteen million of them. Modern America was born on the road, behind a wheel. The car shaped some of the most lasting aspects of American culture: the roadside diner, the billboard, the motel, even the hamburger. For most of the last century, the car represented what it meant to be American—going forward at high speed to find new worlds. The road novel, the road movie, these are the most typical American ideas, born of abundant petrol, cheap cars and a never-ending interstate highway system, the largest public works project in history. In 1928 Herbert Hoover imagined an America with “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” Since then, this society has moved onward, never looking back, as the car transformed America from a farm-based society into an industrial power.gkstk The cars that drove the American Dream have helped to create a global ecological disaster. In America the demand for oil has grown by 22 percent since 1990. The problems of excessive(过度的)energy consumption, climate change and population growth have been described in a book by the American writer Thomas L. Friedman. He fears the worst, but hopes for the best. Friedman points out that the green economy(经济)is a chance to keep American strength. “The ability to design, build and export green technologies for producing clean water, clean air and healthy and abundant food is going to be the currency of power in the new century.” 28. Why is hamburger mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To explain Americans’ love for travelling by car. B. To show the influence of cars on American culture. C. To stress the popularity of fast food with Americans. D. To praise the effectiveness of America’s road system. 29. What has the use of cars in America led to? A. Decline of economy. B. Environmental problems. C. A shortage of oil supply. D. A farm-based society. 30. What is Friedman’s attitude towards America’s future? A. Ambiguous. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Tolerant. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Just Do It Today, Not Tomorrow You're about to call your grandma and you figure you’ll call her as soon as you finish your after school snack. But then you decide to catch up on your favorite TV series, and after that you decide to upload the pictures and then..., before you know it, it’s time for bed. And you still haven’t called Gram. Uh-oh. 31 . But is this your day, every day? Are you always dragging your feet until the last minute and then rushing around to get it all done? Then listen up, because we can help you stop putting things off and start getting things done. 1.Get organized---make a list! Write everything down, and be sure to include when it needs to be completed. 32 . And make it fun--buy a cute notebook just for your to-do lists, and give yourself a happy face sticker every time you complete a task. Or, if you prefer to go digital, try note-taking apps, or just keep your list in the “notes” feature on your phone or pad. 2.Reward yourself. 33 . For smaller jobs, promise yourself one TV series of your favorite YouTube show, or an uninterrupted 15 minutes reading your favorite book. For bigger accomplishments, like finishing up a huge school project, see if your parents will agree to something special, like a sleepover with your two best friends, or “just the two of us” breakfast with mom or dad. 3. 34 . When a project seems overwhelming, it’s so easy to come up with an excuse to postpone. So set small goals instead. For example, if you’re studying for a final exam, put each chapter you need to review on your to-do list, and then work on checking off one chapter a night the week before the exam. Thus, you won’t be stuck staying up late trying to cram everything in the night before the test---so not fun. 4.Face your fears. Sometimes you might put off doing something that you really want to do, like taking tennis lessons. If fear is holding you back, just remember that everyone had to start somewhere. 35 . So stop delaying, and get moving! With just a few small changes, you’ll be able to get things done on time. So what are waiting for? A.Once you identify the reason, you can figure out which strategy will help you tackle the task. B.Just do it. C.You won’t be a beginner forever, and the longer you put it off, the harder it will be. D.We all have those days when we just don't get enough done. E.As you finish the task, put a big check-mark next to it! F.Break it down. For those things that just aren’t that exciting to do, reward yourself for getting them done. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I will always appreciate my father and his faith. I jumped out of the bed, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast. Saying good bye to my mother, I got in the car no later than 7:05. I got to school on time, even though my brother came out of the house late as he used to. It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right. He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was. When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes. I immediately noticed the fear in brother’s eyes. To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car, he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry. ‘ 参考答案: 阅读 A:CCB B:BCCB C:BBC 七选五:DEGFC 完形:36-40 ABCAB 41-45 CDBDB 46-50 DBDCA 51-55 CACAC 语法填空: 56-65: longer, to see, dying, is, than, that / which, causes, strengthen, energetic, it / running 作文: 应用文参考范文 Dear Peter, Glad to receive your letter asking me for some advice on the interview for the Confucius Institute scheduled for Wednesday. He opened the door and I jumped out of the car and hugged him. He noticed that I was worried right away and with a smile on his face told us he had a surprise for us. “What good things happen in hospital?” When we approached the ward, my dad told my brother and me to close our eyes and hold his hands. So we did . His warm hands made us feel more secure. We walked down the hall with our eyes closed. Suddenly we stopped. When we walked into the room, Father told us to open our eyes. We saw our mother lying on the bed. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I was not in pain. Right next to my mother was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It was a girl. She was sleeping. She was my sister. I still remember that day as one of the happiest days of my life.查看更多
