‎ A EP Portable Heater We all know that the cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. Now millions of people are saving on their heating bills with the EP Portable Heater. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EP heats better and faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent.‎ The EP has no exposed heating parts that can cause a fire. The outside of EP only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets.‎ The EP will not reduce oxygen in the room. With other heaters, you'll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen.‎ The advanced EP also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. It comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. Other heaters heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated to the center of the room. And they only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EP, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room.‎ The EP comes with a 3-year warranty (保修) and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it at our expense and your money will be given back to you.‎ Now, we have a special offer for 10 days, during which you can enjoy a half price discount and a free delivery.‎ ‎ If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price.‎ Take action right now!‎ ‎1.What is mainly discussed in paragraph 2?‎ A. It is believed that James McCormick got about $ 77.8 million from the sales of his detectors---which were based on a kind of golf ball finder---to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia. McCormick, 57, was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London. “Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for  huge profit  ‎ promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially  contributed to causing death and  injury to  innocent people,” Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.” The detectors, sold for up to $ 42, 000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no ‎ use. McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in  Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand. “I never had any bad results from customers,” he said. 5. D.They don’t function on the basis of science. 8. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick ______ .‎ A.sold the equipment at a low price ‎ B.had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text C.did not think he had committed the crime ‎ D.was well-known in most countries C Honesty may well be the policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists report ‎ today. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks show that people are better at paying up when under the gaze(注视) of a pair of eyes. The surprise was that the eyes were not real, but photographed.‎ Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an-honesty box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over 10 weeks, they alternated each week between images of eyes and pictures of flowers.‎ Dr. Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study, said that even though the eyes were not real they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. Their effect may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed as early humans formed social groups that increased their chances of survival. Individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group, rather than act selfishly.‎ ‎"If nobody is watching us it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think we're being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us, "Dr. Bateson said. “We thought we'd get a slight effect with eyes, but it was quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious(潜意识的) level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes send a strong biological signal we have evolved (进化) to respond to."‎ ‎ The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use. The psychologists say images of eyes could promote ticket sales on public transport and improve monitor systems to prevent antisocial behavior.‎ ‎9. This passage is mainly about _________.‎ A. the policy of honesty                B. an honesty box to collect money C. evolution on honesty          D. an experiment on honesty ‎10. The reason for doing the experiment secretly is that the researchers ________.‎ A. wanted to get a comparatively more exact result B. had known they wanted to do something illegally C. meant to get the co-operation of their colleagues D. intended to sell the hot drinks at a higher price ‎11. People behave honestly under watchful gaze of eyes because _________.‎ A. they want to leave a good impression   B. they fear to be laughed at by others C. they've got the nature through evolution      D. they take the photo for a real pair of eyes ‎12. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物类食品),bread and tea or coffee.Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England.Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.‎ Friends If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.‎ Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary home stay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.‎ ‎13. State the different forms of the verbs on page 50 of your French workbook. Read pages 12 through 20 of the Shakespeare play, and don't forget to fill in the missing chemical symbols on the worksheet.‎ Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights - or maybe even just for tonight? 16._ It's your teachers' way of evaluating how much you understand what's going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts.‎ ‎17. _ It's inviting to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. However, you'll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so it's best to use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when you're more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try to figure it out as well as you can - but don't spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. 18. But don't pick someone whom you'll be up all night chatting with, or you'll never get it done!‎ Most people's attention spans aren't very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people. 19. ‎ Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack - there's nothing worse than having a completed assignment that you can't find the next morning or that gets ruined by a careless brother or sister. 20. Now you're free to hang out.‎ A. Homework is a major part of going to school.‎ B. Luckily, you can do a few things to do less homework.‎ C. But if you're really concentrating, wait until it's a good time to stop.‎ D. When you start your homework, deal with the hardest tasks first.‎ E. If you need to, ask an adult for help or call or email a classmate for advice.‎ F. And no teacher still believes that "chewed by the dog" line - even when it's true!‎ G. In conclusion, no one is expected to stay long, and people have very different learning styles.‎ 第二部分: 完形填空 (共 20 小题; 每小题 1.5 分, 满分 30 分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ ‎“Who can ever have imagined someone like me would make it this far?” asked Chad Wood last week during his high school graduation speech as the best student.
