He created a fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings”, the well-known trilogy (三部曲).‎ Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. When he was 4 years old, his father died and his family moved back to England. Tolkien graduated from Oxford University when he was 23 years old, and participated in the First World War. During the war, Tolkien suffered from “trench fever” and stayed in the hospital until the end of World War I. It was the days in the hospital that he began his writing career first.‎ After the war, Tolkien became a linguist. He was an edition of the “New English Dictionary” of 1918 ~ 1920. However, he was more researching to Anglo-Saxon language which makes his extensive contacts in Britain and the Nordic spread all over the folklore and mythology.‎ In 1937, Tolkien completed his first work “The Hobbit”. Although this was a fairy tale, it was also suitable for adults to read. Because of good sales, publishers (Allen & Unwin) convinced Tolkien to write its sequel. This encouraged Tolkien to complete his most famous works the epic (史诗) trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”. The works of writing went on for almost a year with the support from his good friend Lewis.‎ At the beginning “The Lord of the Rings” was similar works for children, but after that writing style quickly became serious and dark. “The Lord of the Rings” was one of the most popular literary works in the 20th century in terms of sales and readers’ evaluation. Tolkien’s influence is important, for the success of “The Lord of the Rings” makes the fantasy novels of this literature genre (体裁) developed rapidly.‎ ‎24. Tolkien wrote the “New English Dictionary” himself.‎ C. “The Lord of the Rings” was finished about half a year.‎ D. Tolkien began his writing career in the hospital.‎ ‎26. What is Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” considered to be?‎ A. The first works of Tolkien B. Always serious and dark C. Beneficial to the development of the fantasy novels D. The most popular literary works in the 20th century ‎27. The word “evaluation” in the last paragraph is closet to the meaning of “________”.‎ A. opinion B. value C. interest D. hobby C Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.‎ If I have learned anything in my 18 years, it is communication that is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let others know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.‎ Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore everyone. Even if you just say and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.‎ If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance of information, correspondence (通信),means of communication: a letter or a message”. To maintain a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if ifs just by writing ‎ a note.‎ When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.‎ This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go.‎ Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel—listening is the key factor to communication.‎ ‎28. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?‎ A. The disagreement between generations.‎ B. The importance of communication.‎ C. The great importance of keeping silent.‎ D. The necessity of making your feeling known.‎ ‎29. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that ________.‎ A. parents should listen to their children B. children should always obey their parents C. parents and children should not yell or ignore D. equality plays a part in family communication ‎30. What does the example in this passage prove?‎ A. Sophie’s parents did a good job in listening to her.‎ B. Children should first explain themselves to their parents.‎ C. Communication is the solution to misunderstanding.‎ D. Parents would be mad at their children’s returning home late.‎ ‎31. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Walk away instead of yelling if communication fails.‎ B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing.‎ C. Talking is more important than listening in communication.‎ D. You should feel good about yourself when communicating.‎ D Last year, Claire Noble-Randall woke up at 5:30 am every morning. She had to catch two buses to arrive in time for first-period chemistry at Ingraham High School in Seattle, US.‎ Ingraham starts at 8 am, but Noble-Randall often didn’t go to sleep until after midnight. “It was really hard not to fall asleep in class,” she said.‎ Her mom solved the problem this year when she discovered that other parents had hired a private city tour bus to take their children to the school.‎ ‎“Now, she leaves the house at a much more reasonable time 7:10 in the morning…to catch the little tour bug at 7:23 am,” said her mother, Noelle Noble.‎ That may be one way to help students get more sleep. But more than 3,300 people have signed an online petition (请愿) looking for a better solution from the Seattle school district. Those who have signed the petition want all high schools and middle schools to start no earlier than 8:30 am. Most of Seattle’s high schools and middle schools start at 8 am or earlier.‎ Later start times for teenagers is an idea that some parents around the nation, have wanted for years. They’ve provided plenty of scientific evidence that teenagers tend to be night owls and delayed start times improve their health, mood, attention, and, in some cases, learning.‎ But attempts to delay start times for teenagers haven’t worked. Coaches don’t want late dismissals (放学) cutting into sports practices; community groups don’t want to wait longer for gyms and fields and before- and after-school programs don’t want to change their schedules.‎ This time, however, they’ve got Seattle School Board. President Sharon Peaslee ‎ on their side. She herself is the mother of two high school students. Peaslee hopes other board members will pass her plan calling on the district to find a way to make the changes.‎ ‎32. How did Noble-Randal solve her problem of early classes?‎ A. She quit first-period classes.‎ B. She found a faster way to the school.‎ C. She took a private city tour bus to the school.‎ D. Her family moved to a house near the school.‎ ‎33. People who signed the online petition want schools to ________.‎ A. provide a school bus service B. delay school start times C. improve the quality of lessons D. stop students from falling asleep in class ‎34. Why did parents’ attempts to change school start times fail?‎ A. Not enough people signed the petition.‎ B. No scientific evidence could support their idea.‎ C. It would influence the schools’ schedules.‎ D. It would influence many out-of-school activities,‎ ‎35. What can we infer from the article?‎ A. More parents will hire a private bus for their children.‎ B. Seattle schools plan to change their schedules next year.‎ C. There will be less after-school activities and programs.‎ D. There is now a higher chance of delaying school start times.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分;共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Fun doesn’t have to be expensive Everyone likes to have fun, but not everyone h«s much money to upend.
