I now get around my room and this floor of the hospital with a walking stick but I can go only a little bit at a time because I’m awfully weak yet. My right leg was taken out of the cast (石膏) several days ago and it’s still as stiff as a board and awfully sore from so much carving around the knee joint. But the surgeon says that eventually it will be all right. I’ve included a picture of me in bed. It looks like my left leg is a stump (残肢), but it really isn’t. Just bent so it looks that way.‎ This war makes us a bit less fools than we were. There isn’t going to be any such thing as “foreigners” for me after the war is won. I’ve gotten Italian pretty well. I’ve picked up quite a lot of Polish and my French is improving. You want to be prepared for a lot of visitors after the war now because I’ve a lot of pals coming to see me in Chicago. I don’t know when I’ll be back. I can’t get in the army and they won’t take me with two shaky legs in the draft (征兵) if I go home. So I might as well stay over here and avoid the awkwardness for a while.‎ Also Ma, I’m in love again. Now don’t start worrying about me getting married for I’m not. I’m not even going to get engaged. So don’t write any “God Bless U, My Children”: Not for about 10 years. You’re a dear old kid, and still my best girl. God bless you and write me often I love you.‎ Ernie ‎21. By mentioning that his right leg would be all right, the writer intends to ___________.‎ A. put his mom’s mind at ease B. show the cruelty of the war ‎ C. persuade his girlfriend to marry him D. get his mom’s permission to join the army ‎22. We can learn from the letter that ___________.‎ A. Ernie is able to speak four foreign languages B. Ernie hopes to keep in touch with his mother C. Ernie hardly made any friends before the war D. Ernie is engaged but hasn’t had the plan for marriage ‎23. What emotion is mainly conveyed in the letter?‎ A. Gratitude for doctors. B.Fear about pain.‎ C. Doubt about friendship. D. Love for Mom.‎ B Do dogs understand us?‎ Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. ‎ A border collie(牧羊犬) named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩). ‎ In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. ‎ In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. ‎ The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. ‎ Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. ‎ ‎ It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! ‎ ‎24. From paragraph 2 we know that _________ . ‎ A. animals are as clever as human beings B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees ‎ C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills ‎ D. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3-year-old children ‎ ‎25. Both experiments show that ___________. ‎ A. Rico can recognize different things including toys ‎ B. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right ‎ C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics ‎ D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them ‎ ‎26. Which of the following statements is true? ‎ A. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.‎ B. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.‎ C. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. ‎ D. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities. ‎ ‎27. What does the writer want to tell us? ‎ A. To train your dog. B. To be friendly to your dog. ‎ C. To talk to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog.‎ C Customers chat, read the newspaper and order sandwiches and drinks at August First Bakery & Café in Burlington‎, ‎Vermont, but there's something different here. “I was here working on my laptop when I looked over and saw that there was a sign that said ‘laptopfree’” says Luna Colt, a student at the University‎ of ‎Vermont. During a recent visit, Colt was shocked that using her computer was against the rules.‎ When owner Jodi Whalen first opened it four years ago, she offered free WiFi to customers. Students like Colt went there in large numbers and started typing away—and staying all day. “We saw a lot of customers come in, look for a table, not be able to find one and leave,” Whalen says. “It was money flowing out of the door for us.” That's why Whalen decided there'd be no more screens. It was a gradual move. She started by shutting down the WiFi two years ago. Then, the café banned screens during lunch. “A lot of people were bummed out,” Whalen says. “But we actually saw our sales increase.”‎ What's socially acceptable when it comes to using a laptop in public? Luna Colt thinks it's about how much money you spend. “You should buy something every two hours if you're going to be here and just work all day,” Colt says. “As long as you're being a good customer,” she says, “there's nothing wrong with working on a laptop.”‎ Not quite, according to Whalen. “It's less about how much a laptop user buys, and more about table space. Even if they think they're a good customer because they buy food, they're still here for long hours,” she says. “To walk into a place and see people looking at their screens with a blank stare, it takes away the community aspect of it—of you being in a place with other people,” Whalen adds.‎ ‎28. Why is August First Bakery & Café different?‎ A. It is only open to university students.‎ B. It offers unusual sandwiches and drinks.‎ C. Those who visit the café are often very strange.‎ D. Customers are not allowed to use their laptops.‎ ‎29. The underlined words “bummed out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “_____”.‎ A. grateful B. disappointed C. fortunate D. frightened ‎30. Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A. Luna Colt is not popular with Jodi Whalen.‎ B. Luna Colt agrees with what the owner did.‎ C. All the students went there to enjoy the food.‎ D. Jodi Whalen didn't offer WiFi to customers.‎ ‎31. What’s the main idea of the text?‎ A. It is good for our health to stay away from WiFi.‎ B. A café owner improves sales by saying no to laptops.‎ C. A university student shows how to be a good customer.‎ D. People are efficient while working on a laptop in a café.‎ D NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.‎ Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase (抹去) , the effect of painful memories.‎ In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. ‎ The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support it. ‎ Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.‎ ‎"Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard‎ Medical ‎School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering." ‎ But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past. ‎ ‎"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist. ‎ ‎32. The passage is mainly about __________ . ‎ A. a new medical invention B. a new research on the pill ‎ C. a way of erasing painful memories D. an argument about the research on the pill.‎ ‎33. The drug tested on people can . ‎ A. cause the brain to fix memories ‎ B. prevent body producing certain chemicals ‎ C. stop people remembering bad experiences ‎ D. wipe out the emotional effects of memories ‎ ‎34. We can infer from the passage that . ‎ A. people doubt the effects of the pills ‎ B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences ‎ C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health ‎ D. the pill has probably been produced in America ‎ ‎35. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with? ‎ A. Some memories can ruin people's lives. ‎ B. People want to get rid of bad memories. ‎ C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others. ‎ D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.‎ 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Ask fishermen why they fish and you will get a variety of answers. The book and movie A River Runs Through It tried to answer that question. 36 ‎ What are mine? Like most fishermen. I love the peace and quietness of most trips. Imagine the still water at your feet, not a ripple(涟漪)on it. 37 And everything around you looks soft. A splash(飞溅的水)breaks the calm, letting you know there is a fish feeding there. You are totally alone with your thoughts, almost as if you were floating in an isolation (隔离)tank.‎ ‎ 38 Trying to make a fish think your lure(诱饵)is its food is not easy. Figuring out where the fish is and why it is there is another part of the challenge. And learning enough about them to consistently catch fish is a challenge most of us don’t overcome.‎ The pull of the fish you hook and the efforts to land it without losing it are part of the fun. Struggling with a fish on a rod and reel is very interesting. Good fresh food is another reason why many people go fishing. Getting your own food is another basic need that fishing provides.‎ Competition has become a big part of fishing. I like it, where a group of people go out and try to catch fish. 39 It is nice when you win, but you try to listen and learn from the winner when you are not on top.‎ For many years, I had an irresistible desire to go fishing. I could not wait to get to the waterside and try to show my skills against those fish. I was not happy except when fishing. 40 However, that strong urge is no longer there. Sometimes I miss it.‎ A. The challenge of being cleverer than fish is part of it.‎ B. You must have enough patience when fishing beside a river.‎ C. The truth is that every fisherman has his or her own reasons.‎ D. The fog is just thick enough so trees disappear in the distance.‎ E. As I get older,I still enjoy fishing and all the things mentioned here.‎ F. At the end of the day,you get to compare how many fish you have caught.‎ 六校联考高二年级英语试卷第5页/共8页 六校联考高二年级英语试卷第6页/共8页 G. That part of the fishing experience lasts for only a few minutes each day.‎ 第三部分 语言知识运用 第一节 完形填空 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Eleven years ago, it seemed as if the world came to an end. Now I am writing to help you analyze them. ‎ There is no denying that we can get the latest news about the world as soon as possible with our computers and smart phones. What’s more, it’s easier for us to search for some news online. Also, by reading news online, we can reduce the use of paper, which will definitely contribute to the environmental protection. However, there are some problems at the same time. Everyone can release news online, so there may be some false news. Worse still, some false news will mislead us and even cause some serious effects. ‎ Therefore, I advise you to be careful while reading news online and tell the truth before spreading the news online. ‎ Best wishes. ‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua 附录音原文 ‎(Text 1) ‎ M: Hey, Julia, you should go every three months to have your teeth checked in the dentist’s, right?‎ W: Yeah, I went just one week ago. But they want to see me again in one month. ‎ ‎(Text 2) ‎ M: Gracie, can I borrow your cell phone for a minute?‎ W: What’s wrong with your phone? ‎ M: I have it with me, but it just ran out of power. I must have forgotten to charge it last night. ‎ ‎(Text 3) ‎ W: Do you smoke in your daily life? ‎ M: Actually, I think it’s no more than killing oneself. ‎ ‎(Text 4) ‎ W: Samuel, do you like the movie? ‎ M: Um, the plot is old-fashioned, but the acting is convincing. What about you?‎ W: Well, it is really not my cup of tea. ‎ ‎(Text 5) ‎ W: Nobody told me that Howard was ill in hospital because of the serious lung disease. ‎ M: Sorry, I meant to call you, but it slipped my mind. ‎ ‎(Text 6) ‎ M: Good morning, can I help you?‎ W: Yes. I’d like to rent a bicycle for a day. ‎ M: OK. It’s 15 dollars a day plus 40 dollars for the deposit. ‎ W: I see.‎ M: What kind of bike do you prefer? We have ordinary bikes, racing bikes and mountain bikes.‎ W: I think an ordinary one will do. When shall I return the bike? ‎ M: It has to be returned before dark as there isn’t any light on it. It usually gets dark by 6:30 at this time of year so you have to get it back by 6:00 pm. People usually give it back at 5:30 or so. ‎ ‎(Text 7)‎ W: Excuse me, I think I’m the next.‎ M: Yes, madam. How can I help you?‎ W: It’s the sweater. I bought it two weeks ago. It was guaranteed not to shrink, but look at it. It has shrunk already and the size is smaller than I bought. Obviously, it is not worth its high price. ‎ M: That’s very strange. We have been selling this particular make for years and we haven’t had any complaints in all that time. Did you wash it in hot water?‎ W: No, I followed the instructions exactly.‎ M: In that case, you can choose any other products of the same price. ‎ W: Well, I’d rather have my money back.‎ M: I see. It’s not our normal practice, but I suppose we can arrange that. ‎ ‎(Text 8) ‎ M: Hi, Elena, you look tired. ‎ W: Hi, Adam, I am just worn out. I worked around the clock to have my papers done yesterday. You know, I often have a problem with meeting deadlines. ‎ M: Do you want to feel less stressed? ‎ W: Of course, but how? Watch movies or go shopping?‎ M: They may work but believe it or not, there is one thing that can help you do all of this.‎ W: What is it? ‎ M: It’s regular physical activity. You can make your personal fitness plan. ‎ W: I don’t really have time.‎ M: No time? People always say that, but you know, you can try shorter periods of activity throughout the day such as walking 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time or running for 30 minutes a time every other day. ‎ W: It sounds great. I will give it a try. ‎ ‎(Text 9) ‎ M: Let’s look at your problem: you always fail the job interviews.‎ W: It seems so, sir. I always find those questions hard to answer. For example, they always ask me what I think is important in a job.‎ M: Well, you should mention specific rewards other than salary or welfare, for example, challenge and the feeling of accomplishment.‎ W: That sounds good. And they often ask why I decide to join their small and young company.‎ M: Apparently, to have more opportunities with an expanding company. ‎ W: Great, I think the toughest question is what my strengths and weaknesses are. ‎ M: You can give a response like this: “I work well with others.” ‎ W: Terrific. ‎ M: For your weakness, you can say that you tend to push yourself too hard. The trick is to describe a weakness so that it can also be considered as an advantage. ‎ W: I see. Sometimes they also ask me what I dislike about my previous job. ‎ M: You can talk about the things you don’t like, but avoid making even slightest reference to any of your former employers. And never forget to prepare at least one question about the company.‎ W: I’ll remember that. I understand employers like a candidate who is interested in the organization. ‎ ‎(Text 10) ‎ As an international student coming from South Africa, I’m honored to give these opening remarks and welcome you all to Sydney‎ ‎University. I feel that we are the most fortunate and privileged students in Australia. The university provides us with advanced facilities and various financial aids, among many other benefits. At Sydney‎ ‎University, everyone is considered a leader and is treated as special. It equips us with the necessary determination, strength and belief in ourselves to be able to achieve our goals. We are being taught to think outside the box and to question and challenge our assumptions about the world we live in. In addition, the university has employed an excellent teaching staff consisting of lecturers from various countries including ‎ Canada‎, the UK and the United States. These lecturers are among the best in their respective fields. This is the school’s greatest fortune. Most importantly, I want to stress that we must give back to our society after completing school and achieving our goals in life.‎
