Fewer phone calls were coming in, but he tried not to panic. Then customers stopped calling completely and he had no choice but to apply for bankruptcy. Without his support, his wife’s business also went under. Old Michael started looking for jobs.‎ The only work he could find was to be a custodian(管理员) at a local college. The pay was about half what he used to make, but the benefits were good, so he told himself that he would avail himself of the benefits offered by the school. One of the added job benefits was tuition-free classes, so he decided to attend them as well. Michael would take the classes by day and clean up after his schoolmates at night.‎ But it didn’t all go smoothly. “When you have lost everything like me, you don’t trust your ambition. You’re just trying to get through the day,” Michael said. “It was hard to look my kids in the eye. I couldn’t tell them to work hard and they’d be successful…because I did that, and I lost.”‎ In spite of the hardships Michael had to go through, he kept going to classes, and after three years into his studies he realized he was well on his way to a college degree. He felt awkward attending school along with students at his kids’ age, but the support of the other students turned out to be a big factor in his unbelievable achievement.‎ In 2016, eight years after taking his first class at WPI, Michael walked out on the stage to pick up his diploma. Michael’s ambition and insistence have inspired the entire custodial staff at WPI. “When people say my story inspires them, I know what that means on the other side. From time to time, other people’s stories got me through unpleasant times. I’m glad I can be that person.” Michael said.‎ ‎24.What happened to Michael in 2008?‎ A.He failed in his business.‎ B.He was cheated by his partner.‎ C.He was divorced for lack of money.‎ D.He started a new company.‎ ‎25.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A.Get rid of.‎ B.Take advantage of C.Keep pace with.‎ D.Pay attention to.‎ ‎26.What challenged Michael while he worked in WPI?‎ A.The bad pay.‎ B.The hard schoolwork.‎ C.The low-status job.‎ D.The shadow of failure.‎ ‎27.What did Michael mean in the last paragraph?‎ A.There’s no need to praise him.‎ B.People need read inspiring stories.‎ C.One’s story can positively affect another person.‎ D.People should learn to be more positive.‎ C Several decades ago, educators in the USA began to call attention to a national problem: most students leave American schools without the mathematical skills needed for jobs or for higher education. This was especially true for female and minority students. The Educational Testing Service reported that, in an international survey, American teenagers had the lowest math scores.‎ This situation has been defined as “innumeracy”, or the inability to grasp the basic idea of mathematics. Mathematicians, teachers, and scientists were alarmed by these findings. They looked for the reasons and decided that, in addition to poor education, there are many psychological blocks.‎ Embarrassment about not knowing math can lead to fear in the classroom. Fear can lead to silence because students do not want to draw attention to their lack of knowledge. As a result, those students fall further and further behind. Low visibility in the classroom has not always been recognized as a silent call for help.‎ Math educators decided to try to change that. Math reform is beginning with the educators themselves. Teachers are now being trained to recognize and to help students work through “math anxiety”---- the roadblock on their way to gaining competence in mathematics. In addition, math textbooks are being updated to help students understand that math is not a sort of foreign language of numbers. Math is a tool that helps us to analyze patterns and structures, and to discover relationships.‎ Traditional computing skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are still being taught, of course. However, there is added emphasis on logical thinking and creative problem solving, to which there may be several equally valid solutions. ‎ ‎28.What does the underlined sentence probably mean?‎ A.Students with low scores fear to ask their teachers for help.‎ B.Poor equipment in classrooms limits teens’ chances to learn.‎ C.Math anxiety, hardly noticed, is actually a silent call for help.‎ D.Poor-sighted students can’t see clearly, which is a silent call for help.‎ ‎29.Which may lead to American students’ innumeracy?‎ A.The methods of teaching. B.The difficulty of math itself.‎ C.Students’ lack of interest in math. D.Schools’ not attaching enough value to it.‎ ‎30.What may be discussed in the following paragraph?‎ A.What to be taught in America’s revised math programs.‎ B.How to make math reform actually benefit American student.‎ C.How to improve teens’ logical thinking and problem-solving abilities.‎ D.Why traditional computing skills are necessary in mathematics education.‎ ‎31.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.Mathematic skills needed for higher education.‎ B.The features of America’s mathematics education.‎ C.Improvements in mathematics education in the US.‎ D.The importance of mathematics education in the US.‎ D Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud(发芽) earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it’s not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which signals the arrival of the spring season.‎ Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the unwanted consequence of outdoor lighting such as street lights. Excessive(过多的) man-made light at night results in disturbed natural cycles, and also prevents the observation of stars and planets at night. But its effect on the environment goes beyond that.‎ By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees that are more exposed to artificial lighting at night bud up to 7.5 days earlier than those at the natural nighttime setting. And they found out that light had a more significant effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard French -Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of the ecosystem. “At the moment, caterpillars(毛虫) are timed to hatch to make the most of the opportunities to feed on freshly budded leaves, and birds hatch in time to feed on the young caterpillar,” he said.‎ Migratory(迁徙的) birds are also negatively affected by light pollution. The glare might confuse them and make them lose their flying sense. The phenomenon might explain why some birds accidentally knock into buildings.‎ Such results stress the need to pursue studies that aim to measure the effect of light pollution. If the issue were left to continue, it is estimated that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.‎ ‎32.What will happen if there is too much man-made light?‎ A. People’s eyesight will be damaged.‎ B.The ecosystem will likely lose its balance.‎ C.No stars or planets may be observed at night.‎ D.Animals’ living habits may change suddenly.‎ ‎33.How does the early budding affect insects or plants?‎ A.It will cause the rising number of insects.‎ B.It could lead to trees growing fewer leaves.‎ C.It may result in some insects going hungry.‎ D.It might push insects to hatch more slowly.‎ ‎34.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?‎ A.The effect of light pollution is destructive.‎ B.The spring of 2100 will become much longer.‎ C.Light pollution should be taken seriously.‎ D.A further study on light pollution is scheduled.‎ ‎35.What is the suitable title for the passage?‎ A.Why spring comes earlier in some cities B.Why light pollution needs to be studied C.How trees’ early budding takes place D.How much light is “too much”‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they are meant to be there. 36 They teach you a lesson, or help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. 37 They may be a roommate, a neighbor , a professor, a friend, a lover, or even a complete stranger. ‎ Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible at first, but later you will find that without those difficulties you would have never realized your potential. 38 It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and completely pointless.‎ The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and failure you experience, help to create who you are and who you become. 39 In fact they are sometimes the most important ones.‎ ‎ If someone loves you, give love back to them not only because they love you, but also because they are teaching you to love and how to open you heart and eyes to things.‎ ‎ 40 They have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to.‎ Make every day count.
