My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project. I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family. Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts(爱心), and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes thought I learned more from my students than they did from me. Sometimes during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States as a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever. 25. What happened when the author left university? A. He became lacking in confidence. B. He wanted to do something meaningful. C.He knew what he wanted to do exactly. D. He wanted to build a lighthouse. 26.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to __________. A. the journey of previous volunteer B. the experience of being a volunteer C. the job as a Lighthouse Project volunteer D. the decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project 27. What can we learn from the author’s experience in Nigeria? A. He felt it hard to make a living there. B. The experience had a great effect on him. C. The local villagers’ life style was strange. D. He had overcome all his shortcomings. C You use her as a shoulder to cry on. She texts you back with casual jokes. But she, Xiaoice, is only a virtual chatbot(虚拟聊天机器人). Xiaoice, Microsoft’s latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and returned to WeChat in 2015, where she became a big hit. Millions of young Chinese now exchange messages with her daily, the New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. After following it, users can start text-based conversations with Xiaoice. “Her incredible learning ability was why people loved to talk with Xiaoice,” Liu Jinchang, a researcher at High-tech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis(表情符号)in conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China Daily reported. Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid-1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies, they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM’s latest artificial intelligence program served as an academic consultant at Australia’s Deakin University, answering students’ questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa have been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their users. These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and living rooms, the New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scientists develop a “Samantha”, the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha has a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers were enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mates. 28.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The robot sold very well. B. The robot became very strong. C. The robot became very cautious. D. The robot was deeply loved by people. 29.What can we learn about Xiaoice? A. It is only a robot. B. It is more than a chatbot. C. It serves as a soul mate. D. It was released in 2016. 30. What can people do with Xiaoice? A. Having a text-based talk with her. B.Making her do housework. C.Reading news to you. D.Playing music for you. 31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To advise people to use virtual artificial robots B. To help people learn to develop chatbot programs. C. To show how to have a romantic relationship with Xiaoice . D. To introduce the development of programs of artificial intelligence. D Generally there are two ways to name typhoons: the number-based method and the list-based method. Following the number-based method, typhoons are coded with various types of numbers such as a 4-digit or a 6-digit code. For example, the 14th typhoon in 2003 can be labeled either as Typhoon 0314 or Typhoon 200314.The disadvantage of this method, however,is that a number is hard to remember. The list-based method,on the other hand,is based on the list of typhoon names chosen in advance by a committee, and is more widely used. At the very beginning, only female names were used because at that time typhoons were named after girlfriends or wives of the experts on the committee. In 1979,however,male names were also included because women protested against(反对)the original naming practice for reasons of gender(性别)equality. In Asia,Western names were used until 2000 when the committee decided to use Asian names to raise Asians' awareness of typhoons. The names were chosen from a name pool consisting of 140 names,10 each from the 14 members of the committee. Each country has its unique naming preferences(偏爱).Korea and Japan favor animal names and China likes names of gods such as Longwang (dragon king)and Fengshen(god of the wind). After the 140 names are all used in order, they will be recycled. But the names can be changed. If a member country suffers great damage from a certain typhoon,it can request that the name of the typhoon be deleted(删除) from the list at the annual committee meeting. For example, the names of Nabi by South Korea, and Longwang by China Were replaced with other names in 2007.The deletion of both names was due to the severe damage caused by the typhoons bearing the names. 32.With the number-based method, the 3rd typhoon in 2012 can be named . A.Typhoon 0314 B.Typhoon 0312 C.Typhoon 201214 D.Typhoon 1203 33.In 1979 male names began to be used for typhoons because . A.men thought it was their right B.female names are hard to remember C.women thought it unequal to use only female names D.the experts preferred to have more variety 34.Which of the following Chinese names is most likely to be on the name list now? A.Longwang B.Fengshen C.Daxiang (elephant) D.Mayi (ant) 35.What does the passage tell us? A.how typhoons are named B.why to name typhoons C.the history of typhoons D.equality between men and women 第二节.下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句,请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。 4 Key Strategies for Running to Lose Weight As one of the most active exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. Healthy Eating is the First Step If you want to lose weight by running, keep in mind that you’ll only lose pounds if you burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life functions, about 3500 calories. 17 Runners do have special nutrition needs, but the basic principles for healthy eating still apply. Try choosing smaller portions of high-fat and high-calorie foods and eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. 2. Follow a training schedule Sticking to a training schedule is a simple way to stay motivated to run. 18_ So it’s much harder to postpone or skip workouts. Following a schedule can also help you avoid a running injury by not increasing your mileage(英里数)too quickly. 3. Run regularly If you don’t want to follow a schedule, you still need to have some consistency with your running because you won’t lose weight by running once a week. It’s best to get some activity every day. 19 If you find that your motivation to run is suffering, follow some necessary tips to get inspired. 4. 20 Speed running or interval(间隔的)training (running at a very fast speed for short intervals of time) into your running routine can also help your weight loss efforts. Speed work burns a great amount of calories in a short period of time. You’ll also increase your muscle mass, causing you to burn more calories throughout the day. A. Keep it challenging B. Eat for performance C. You’ll know exactly what you need to do every day and each run builds on the next. D. So you’ll need to combine running with a healthy diet. E. If you’re hoping to use running to lose weight, here’s some advice on how to be successful. F. Here are ways to improve your running motivation. G.
