He began to think that he had no future at all. “Why don’t you start your own business?” one of his uncles told him. “The world is a money-locker, You’d better find a way of opening it.”‎ ‎“But what can I do?”‎ ‎“Get out and have a look round,” advised his uncle in an unclear sort of way. “See what people want; then give it to them, and they will pay for it.”‎ Botty began to cycle around the town and found a suitable piece of a waste ground in the end. Then he set up business as a cycle repairer. He worked hard, made friends with his customers and gradually managed to create possibilities and make money. A few months later, he found that he had more work than he could deal with by himself. He found a number of empty shops but they were all no good: in the wrong position, too expensive or with some other handicaps. But at long last, he managed to find an empty shop on a new estate (住宅群) where there were plenty of customers but no competition.‎ Botty and his assistant taught themselves how to repair scooters (小轮摩托车) and motorcycles. In research presented lately at a meeting of the British Ecological Society in Liverpool, scientists will explain how rising temperatures are depriving (剥夺) female reindeer of nutrients (营养物) during important periods of pregnancy.‎ Snow in Svalbard typically covers the ground for eight months of the year, which, combines with low temperatures, limits grass growth to June and July, But as summer temperatures increases by around ‎1.5 ℃‎, grasslands will become more productive, allowing female reindeer to gain more weight by the autumn and therefore to conceive (怀孕) more babies. However, warmer winters have brought with them greater rainfall which freezes when it settles on the snow, thus locking out the reindeer from the life-sustaining (维持生命的) food below. Reindeer can often access the poor food sources beneath the snow by clearing it away with their antlers (鹿角), but it is impossible for them to break through the hard ice.‎ As a result, female reindeer are becoming starved, causing them to abort (流产) their babies or giving birth to much lighter young.‎ The average mass of an adult reindeer in 1994, when the survey began, was ‎55kg, but by 2010 it had dropped to ‎48kg. If nothing should be done, there would be more harm to reindeer.‎ ‎29. What causes reindeer’s weight loss?‎ A. The immigration of reindeer. B. The rising of temperatures.‎ C. The growing population of reindeer. D. The frequent hunting activities,‎ ‎30. How does the text explain the decrease in reindeer’s body-mass?‎ A. By listing facts. B. By using figures.‎ C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.‎ ‎31. What can be inferred from the text?‎ A. Warm winters have brought more rainfall.‎ B. Reindeer aren’t able to give birth anymore.‎ C. The author shows much concern over reindeer.‎ D. More productive grasslands make reindeer conceive fewer babies.‎ D Science is always playing an important role in saving lives, but now it’s questioned whether science should save more lives through human cloning.‎ The first cloning experiments in the 1950s were on frogs and toads. It was not until 1997 that scientists successfully cloned the first mammal (哺乳动物), the now World-famous sheep known as Dolly, and today there are cloned mice, salmon, and cattle.‎ Some scientists want to apply the methods used in cloning animals to produce skin, organs, and other body parts for humans. The cloning of human cells provides the potential to find cures and rid diseases. The dream of some researchers is to create a fantastic world of good health. Others question whether it is right to “Play God” in an attempt to cure the disabilities and diseases of this world.‎ Some of the great hopes for cloning include the ability to perform transplants (移植), whenever they are needed, using cloned organs. For example, people with lung cancer may simply have their lungs replaced with healthy ones. Scientists also look forward to the day when people in wheelchairs can walk again, and illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease can be prevented.‎ Many people fear the effects cloning could have on our society. They really worry about a great number of selfs, and the production of “perfect” humans for warfare or slave labor. We might even see headless human bodies being stored at hospitals for their “spare parts”. With such thought-provoking (发人深省的) possibilities for the 21st century, human cloning will no doubt continue to receive widespread attention.‎ ‎32. What can be known from Paragraph 2?‎ A. Dolly is not famous any longer.‎ B. Dolly is the only cloned mammal. ‎ C. Experiments of cloning prove perfect. ‎ D. Cloning technology continues to progress.‎ ‎33. Science in cloning draws much attention.‎ B. Some scientists want to clone human parts.‎ C. It’s wise to cure all the diseases through cloning.‎ D. It may be fearful to see many people with the same looks.‎ ‎35. What’s the best title for the text?‎ A. Is Cloning the Future? B. Is Human Cloning Successful?‎ C. The Advantages of Cloning D.
