C The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate (气候) into a new ice age, may never occur, according to new research. The next ice age could be 15,000 years away, say European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740,000 years of climate data (数据) obtained from the Antarctic(南极的) ice. Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled (钻)through a 3,000-meter depth of ice high in the Antarctic mainland. They figure out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to -40℃, has at least 900,000 years of snowfalls, kept as neatly as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer (层) have begun to answer questions about the climates in the past. The results show that there have been eight ice ages in the past 740,000 years and eight warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with those of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15,000 years. Research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels are the highest for at least 440,000 years. "If people say to you: the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise, our data say no, a new ice age is not hanging over our heads," said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey." Now we have eight examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages … and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future." Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record, so did carbon dioxide level. " In 440,000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today," said Dr Wolff. 29. In drilling through the ice in Antarctica, scientists have found that _____. A. the lowest temperature there is -40℃ B. the depth of ice is 3,000 meters C. the ice has existed for 15,000 years D. snowfalls are kept in certain patterns(模式) 30. The information of the global climate conditions in the past can be obtained through _____. A. separating carbon dioxide from the air B. examining the growth rings of trees C. comparing temperatures in different areas D. studying the ice and air caught in each layer 31. We can infer from Eric Wolff's words that _____. A. there is something wrong with the data B. greenhouse effect is always a bad thing C. a new ice age will not come in the near future D. greenhouse gas will get thick in the future 32. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Research over the Antarctic area. B. Warm period to last about 15,000 years. C. Report on the eight ice ages in the past. D. Hollywood movies and the global climate. D More American people take their troubles with them on holiday, according to a new survey. Although 40 percent said that the main reason for going away is to escape pressure(压力) from work, almost all said they worry more than they do at home. Only four in every 100 said that they are happy and free of care. The most common worry is burglary(入室盗窃), with four out of 10 worrying about their homes being broken into while they’re abroad. More than a quarter fear they will feel crazy with some other noisy and rough holiday-makers and 22 percent worry they may be attacked or their possessions will be missing. One in five think the car may break down, and the same number worry about the chances of bad weather. The survey also showed that the stay-at-home Americans are no more. Three out of every five want to have a holiday abroad, a great increase from the figures(数字) only three years ago. The hotel holiday is still a winner, with about one third of all Americans preferring to go on a self-catering(自助) holiday. 33. According to the text, about _____ of people worry more on holiday than when they are at home. A. 25% B. 40% C. 80% D. 95% 35. The third most common worry of American holiday-makers is that they may______. When we sweat, we lose salts which the body needs to mantain its balance. Excessive (过度的) sweating combined with drinking decreases the concentration of salts in the body to a dangerous level. 37 He found this when he treated a woman running a marathon. However, anyone can suffer from hyponatraemia. There are four main factors that could lead someone to get hyponatraemia. Those most at risk are the very young and the very old, because they are less able to regulate their water and salt levels by themselves. 38 This includes marathon and triathlon competitors. However, it is not the skilled athletes who are in danger, but those who run marathons as an occasional hobby. Thirdly, heat and humidity (潮湿) increase the possibility. The kind of heat at which hyponatraemia can set in is not particularly hot --- 20℃. The highest number of incidents recorded at one time was when 24 runners were hospitalized during a marathon in California when the temperature was only 23℃. 39 Lastly, people in nightclubs are also at risk. The atmosphere there is hot and humid, and they tend to stay there for a long time. A young woman was recently admitted to hospital after drinking ten liters of water while exercising in a gym. She spent four days in hospital recovering. 40 However, it is best to take sports drinks when exercising. A. Hyponatraemia was first noticed in 1981 by a doctor in South Africa. B. Of course, we should all drink water. C. Her salt levels were found to be dangerously low. D. Secondly, anyone who exercises for a long period is at risk. E. Sufferers may even die. F. However, what many people do not realize is that too much water can be harmful. G. As it gets hotter, runners slow down but drink more, and do not replace any lost salts. What a busy day!
