His natural curiosity about things and the way they work made him try to find ways to make them work better. Ben had poor vision and needed glasses to read. He got tired of constantly taking them off and putting them back on, so he decided to figure out how his glasses let him see both near and far. He had two pairs of glasses cut in half and put half of each hens(镜片)in a single frame. Today, we call them bifocals(双光眼镜). Everyone knows the story of Ben's famous kite flight. Although he made important discoveries and advancements, Ben did not "invent" the electricity. He did, however, invent the lighting rod which protects buildings and ships from lighting. In colonial America, most people warmed their homes by building a fire in a fireplace even though it was dangerous and used a lot of wood. Ben figured that there had to be a better way. His invention of an iron furnace stove allowed people to warm their homes less dangerously and with less wood. The furnace stove that he invented is called the Franklin Stove. Interestingly enough, Ben also set up the first fire company and the first fire insurance company in order to help people live more safely. As a postmaster, Ben had to figure out routes for delivering the mail. He went out riding in his carriage to measure the routes and needed a way to keep track of the distance. He invented a simple odometer(里程表) and attached it to his carriage. Later, other famous inventors, like Tomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, followed in Ben's footsteps by trying to find ways to help people live better. 4. How many things invented by Benjamin Franklin are mentioned in the passage? A. 3 B. 4 C.5 D.6 5. What do we know about the Franklin Stove? A. It is much smaller than the traditional stove. B. The life of Benjamin Franklin D. Benjamin Franklin, a great inventor C Good News for Pandas! They are cute and cuddly round-faced animals and look like they are almost smiling. They are probably one of the most loved of all animals. These creatures are slow and gentle, with white and black fur. Any guesses for the animal we are talking about? Yes, it is the Giant Panda! Last week there was some good news for the pandas in the wild. Thanks to some amazing conservation efforts in China to save the species, the population of the giant pandas has rebounded by 17% since 2000. At last count, it is estimated that there are now over 2000 pandas in the wild. The result: pandas have been moved from the endangered list to the easily injured species list. In the 1970s, due to a sudden decline(下降) in panda population, the International Union of Conservation (IUC) placed the animals on the endangered species list. At that time, the Chinese government launched intensive efforts to save the panda from extinction. Trading of panda skin was banned and a panda reserve system was created to protect their natural habitats. Meanwhile, efforts were made for setting up breeding of pandas in the wild and in captivity. Political willpower, science and efforts by the larger community helped bring the pandas back from the brink(边缘) of extinction. Though the situation is much better for pandas now, things are not all rosy. Pandas love their bamboo. An average adult panda consumes 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo for their daily nutrition. In fact 99% of a giant panda’s diet consists of bamboo. So you can imagine how much they depend on a bamboo-based habitat. The shrinking(缩减) of the panda population is directly a result of severe habitat loss and human interaction(介入). These days less than 1% of the panda’s original habitats in the wild remain. The animals are confined(局限于) to 20 isolated areas of bamboo forests in six mountain ranges in China’s Sichuan, Shnazi and Gansu provinces in the wild. 8. What’s pandas like? A. lovely, quick, round-faced B. cruel, gentle, square-faced C. frightening, slow, round-faced D. lovely, gentle, round-faced 9.What does the underlined word “rebound” in para.4 refers to? A. rebuild B. decrease C. increase D. recover 10.Which are NOT the Chinese government make to save the panda from dying out? A. Creating a panda reserve system B. Banning the trading of panda skin. C. Giving away pandas to other countries. D. Setting up breeding of pandas in the wild. 11.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Bamboo is the only food pandas eat. B. The loss of bamboo-based habitat is the main reason for the shrinking of the panda population. C. These days more than 1% of the panda’s original habitats in the wild remain. D. An average adult panda consumes 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo for their daily nutrition. D The importance of Vitamin D has been known for some time for promoting bone growth and improving the body's immunity(免疫系统). A recent study by the Leads Teaching Hospital found that Vitamin D could improve the working of the heart especially in the case of those suffering from cardiac diseases such as heart failure. The study was conducted on 163 patients with an average age of 70. The findings are -- shall we say heart-warming!! Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body on exposure to the sun and is important for healthy bones and teeth apart from other benefits for the functioning of the body. It is possible that every cell in the body might require Vitamin D in some form or the other for proper functioning. In case of people who do not go out in the sun much, the levels of this vitamin might be very low. It is also found that old people tend to produce less of it within their body due to a natural loss in the efficiency of the body to do so. In UK, people above the age of 65 are advised to regularly take 10 micrograms of vitamins. In these small amounts, there were no side effects and people on medical treatment showed large improvements. Although few foods contain vitamin D naturally, some foods are rich in it, which means that the vitamin is added to the food. Foods that contain vitamin D include - salmon, egg yolk, shrimp, milk, cereal, yogurt, orange juice. While regular adults have a pumping capacity(泵送能力) of 60-70%, it falls to only 25% in case of heart failure patients whose hearts are too weak to pump sufficient blood to the body. Those who had the vitamin D showed an increased efficiency of 34%, a significant improvement. The heart showed signs of becoming smaller and more powerful. Dr Klaus Witte, consulted during the tests, suggested against immediately eating large amounts of the vitamin. The body reactions to large amounts of the vitamins would have to be carefully studied with a larger group over a longer period of time. However, doctors are hopeful that this would result in fewer side effects and longer lives for heart failure patients. 12. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A new cure for heart disease. B. Vitamin D ---- A good friend of bone. C. Vitamin D can improve pumping capacity. D. The role of vitamin D 13. Which of the following is NOT the possible way to get vitamin D? A. exposing to the sun. B. eating vitamin D capsules. C. eating the food such as salmon, egg yolk. D. drinking apple juice. 14. What kind of people tend to produce less vitamin D? A. old people B. small babies C. adults D. women 15. What’s Dr. Klaus Witte’s attitude towards eating vitamin D? A. He is against eating large amounts of it. B. He is totally against eating it. C. He is indifferent to it. D. He suggests using it carefully. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白出的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Peer-to-Peer Travel(共享旅行) Nowadays, people have been tired of traditional tourist ways and want to experience new culture.
