During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier. The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (监督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. There were all together 4 layers, which was made of different materials, such as sand, rocks, stones and so on. Also, Roman roads were cambered (拱形). This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag (之字形的)pattern to make the road rise gradually. All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousand paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, who was emperor at the time, the road’s destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers. Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts of Roman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive achievements of the Roman Empire. 21. The following description about Roman roads is true EXCEPT _____. A. Roman roads were built by the Roman soldiers directed by the engineers B. Roman roads could prevent flooding using the technique we don’t use today C. Roman roads had milestones that were placed every Roman mile D. Roman roads still exist today as an impressive achievement of Roman Empire 22. What information can you find on the milestones? A. The builders of the road. B. The materials used in building roads. C. The distance from one city. D. The time spent in building roads. 23. The passage mainly ________. A. explains the saying “All roads lead to Rome” B. praises ancient Romans for their great achievements C. shows how great the Roman Empire was D. introduces the construction of the Roman roads B If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are. Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many loopholes(漏洞)in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”. 24. The underlined words in this passage means to“______”. A. be ready to help others B. make good use of one’s friends C. be a little ahead of others D. gain something at others’ expense 25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare. B. In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you’re living in the hotel. C. The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to registration of their working hours. D. The workers are always honest with their working hours. 26. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. the Finnish society is of very high moral(道德)level B. there are many loopholes in everyday life in Finland C. in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anything D. everyone in Finland is like a gentleman, for they have faith in themselves C As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more. Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignment and essays are typed on a computer. All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear. “When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.” “I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.” Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite? Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.” To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand. 27.The underlined expression “taking stock in” in paragraph 4 probably means. A. getting bored with B. getting dependent on C. becoming crazy about D. getting curious about 28.The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because ___________. A. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently B. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China 29.Which of the following statement is NOT true of the advantage of handwriting? A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotions. B. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence. D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting 30.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage? A. To Type or to Handwrite. B. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing. C. Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand. D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters.来.Com] 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 You often find somebody who works around you complaining all the time, don’t you? 31About 70% of Americans say being around nonstop complainers sometimes has a bad influence on them. Luckily, here are 4 tips to help form positive patterns. 1. Self-awareness When a negative thought pops into your mind, immediately correct it. Instead of telling yourself “That’s a nice shirt, but I can’t afford it,” change the message to “That will look great with my black pants when I can afford it.” 32. Of course, everyone complains sometimes. But the less frequently you complain, the better you will feel. 2. Distance yourself 33 Excuse yourself and go somewhere quiet, somewhere outdoors in the fresh air. Think of something pleasant before returning. You have to take this seriously because negative people can and will pull you into the quicksand (困境). 3. Don’t try to change complainers If you find yourself trapped in a group of complainers in a meeting or at a social event, simply choose silence. Let their words bounce (弹起) off you while you think of something else. Attempting to stop the complaining can make you a target. 34 If someone says, “I hate Mondays, weekends are too short,” try to think, “I’m glad I rested up over the weekend, so I’m ready to make some improvement on that big project.” 4. 35 When someone is shouting at you angrily, throw the responsibility back at them by asking, “So what do you intend to do about it?” In most cases, complainers don’t really want a solution. They just want to speak them out. If you make them aware that they themselves have to find the solutions, they will leave you alone and find someone else to complain to. If so, you will be happy. A. Find solutions B. Change responsibility C. You have got a lot of company. D. By doing this, it will lead to positive behaviors. E. But you can redirect the discussion in your own mind. F. You will never know what they are going to talk about. G. Whenever possible, escape from negative conversations. 第三部分 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 “Paul must have been trying to carry his waste paper to garbage can and dropped a few pieces.” I ____36____ , picking them up. ____37____ later I found more pieces.
