C Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系) which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.‎ Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustmen”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.‎ ‎1. We learn from the text that corals depend on plants for______.‎ A. food B. light C. oxygen D. comfort ‎2. Some birds like to sit on a sheep because _______.‎ A. they enjoy travelling with the sheep B. they can eat the parasites on the sheep C. they depend on the sheep for existence D. they find the position most comfortable ‎3. The underlined word “they” in the first paragraph refers to ____.‎ A. birds and sheep B. birds and parasites C. parasites and sheep D. sheep, birds and parasites ‎4. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?‎ A. Some animals live better together.‎ B. Some plants depend on each other for food.‎ C. Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.‎ D. Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence ‎【答案】1. C 2. B 3. A 4. 根据第二段的句子:“…taking the useless things from the coral and giving oxygen in return. That is what the animal needs to live.” Some birds like to sit on a sheep because _______.☞文章内容This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. he sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. ‎ ‎【答案】because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. he sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort.☞C选项B. they can eat the ‎ parasites on the sheep。 本单词的前文中的“because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort..” ;另一句“So though they can do with it by themselves…” 综合上面两句话的意思,再结合“…they can do better together with each other.” 根据第二自然段的内容“Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. he relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other.” D。‎ ‎2. For years I have had no idea what I have been doing with my life. I was a 30-year-old lawyer(律师) in New York. But being a lawyer was never my dream or goal in life. I honestly wanted to be a writer. I have a great imagination and would write amazing stories in my head. But I always knew that being a writer was never possible for me because it was a better financial decision to stay a lawyer.‎ Recently, I couldn’t fall asleep at my usual time of 10 p. m. and when I did fall asleep I had the same dream over and over again. The dream starts with me in the ocean trying to go for a swim and I’m searching for something, but I start to drown(溺水) and have no control over my body. Then a light shines through the waters and when I look up all I can see is myself in a bright white room writing a novel. Then I hear a voice say repeatedly, “Now is the time to try something new!”‎ It wasn’t just a dream;it was my opportunity to make something good out of my life. That afternoon, I quit my job at the law firm and I couldn’t have been any happier. My life started at 30, and every day since that point I haven’t stopped enjoying life. I started to write and have been on the best-sellers(畅销书) list for the last two months. Things have definitely turned around.‎ Change is a good thing; it gives us an opportunity to take a chance. So my two favorite ‎ words I live by and so should you are “change and chance”.‎ ‎1. From the first paragraph, we can know that ________.‎ A. a lawyer is likely to earn more than a writer B. it is unlikely that the author becomes a writer C. the author is a 30-year-old lawyer at present D. the author prefers to be a lawyer rather than a writer ‎2. The second paragraph mainly talks about the author’s ________.‎ A. strong desire to become a writer B. difficulty in sleeping at night.‎ C. wish to have a swim in the waters D. terrible swimming experience in the ocean.‎ ‎3. The best title of the text might be _________.‎ A. Change and Choice B. Lawyer or Writer C. Change and Chance D. Risk or Opportunity ‎【答案】1. A 2. A 3. C ‎3. D It’s generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay ‎ ‎$5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.  It’s undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions(性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why should we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are. Moreover, we don’t just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character --- we infer characters that weren’t there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn’t. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition. Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do, though it may not be in compliance(符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut’s advice: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”‎ ‎1. According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are commonly believed to _________.‎ A. determine one’s behavior B. reflect one’s taste C. influence one’s surroundings D. result from one’s habits ‎2. Which of the following would Daryl Bern most probably agree with?‎ A. A kind person will offer his seat to the old B. One buys latte out of true love of coffee C. One recycles plastics to protect the environment D. The return of a wallet can indicate one’s honesty ‎3. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the passage?‎ A. We fail to realize our inner dispositions B. We can be influenced by outside pressures C. Our behavior is the result of our true desires D. Our characters can shape our social relationships ‎4. What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?‎ A. Personalities and attitudes B. Preferences and habits C. Behavior and personalities D. Attitudes and preferences ‎【答案】1. A 2. D 3. B 4. It’s generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. A.‎ ‎2. But a New Jerseybased company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.‎ Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking, ‎ but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging, between 2000 and 2014, global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash. Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. “It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter of water,” TerraCycle founder, Tom Szaky, said. “Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food.”‎ So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products.‎ They’re now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to provide money for the process. And so far, it’s working.‎ ‎“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,” communications director of Terra Cycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always looking for new waste streams to address.”‎ ‎1. What does Terra Cycle intend to do?‎ A. Search for recyclable materials for use.‎ B. Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.‎ C. Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.‎ D. Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.‎ ‎2. The underlined word “trash” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.‎ A. rubbish B. poison C. disaster D. ruin ‎3. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?‎ A. The effective use of cigarette ends.‎ B. The process of recycling cigarette ends.‎ C. The difficulty in recycling cigarette ends.‎ D. The reason for breaking down cigarette ends.‎ ‎4. What Albe said in the last paragraph implies that ______.‎ A. there is more and more waste to be recycled B. it is difficult for TerraCycle to recycle everything C. TerraCycle is trying to meet the challenge of new waste D. TerraCycle has successfully recycled a large amount of waste ‎【答案】1. D 2. A 3. B 4. C ‎5. Does it make you frustrated or terrified? Do you feel this emotion only once in a while or much of the time?‎ The way a person feels inside is important. If you keep feelings locked inside,it can even make you feel sick! Firstly, in a first language the differences are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally, so the question of how hard a language is to learn only makes more sense when learning a second language.‎ A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a native speaker of Chinese, for example, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very different, so first language can affect learning a second language. The greater the differences between the second language and our first, the harder it will be for most people to learn. Many people answer that Chinese is the hardest language to learn, possibly influenced by the thought of learning the Chinese writing system, and the pronunciation of Chinese does appear to be very difficult for many foreign learners. However, for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning writing will be less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet.‎ Some people seem to learn languages easily, while others find it very difficult. Teachers and the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner's motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day to day life.‎ Obviously , British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest language is Japanese, which will probably come as no surprise to many, but the language that they have found to be the most problematic is Hungarian, which uses a similar alphabet to English but has 35 cases (forms of a nouns according to whether it is subject, object, genitive, etc). This does not mean that Hungarian is the hardest language to learn for everyone, but it causes British diplomatic personnel, who are generally used to learning ‎ languages, the most difficulty. However, Tabassaran, a Caucasian language has 48 cases, so it might cause more difficulty if British diplomats had to learn it.‎ Different cultures and individuals from those cultures will find different languages more difficult. Therefore, it is impossible to say that there is one language that is the most difficult language in the world.‎ ‎1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?‎ A. The question of how hard a language is to learn is only applicable to first language acquisition B. The question of how hard a language is to learn is only applicable to second language acquisition C. The question of how hard a language is to learn is applicable to both first and second language acquisition.‎ D. There are too many languages in the world so it’s difficult to say which one is the most difficult to learn.‎ ‎2. Which language will a native Portuguese speaker probably find easier to learn?‎ A. "They want your eyeballs and don't care how you're feeling. But ‎ when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don't want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer."‎ Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails,Web posts and reviews,face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn't necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility,Dr.Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times' website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the "most e-mailed" list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times' readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.‎ Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发)one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared as Dr.Berger explains in his new book,"Contagious: Why Things Catch On."‎ ‎1. Believe it or not, there are some people who actually get paid to do that! According to Reuben Reynoso, a professional mattress tester at San Francisco’s McRoskey Mattress Factory that still makes every mattress by hand, it is real work and needs some training. For a start, it’s not all about jumping to new heights or doing tricks like professional athletes, but rather about feeling each area of the mattress carefully to detect the filling. In order to do it right, every bit of the mattress has to be tested slowly and deliberately.‎ Over the years, Reynoso has figured out the perfect routine. He begins by placing a protective mat over the mattress so that it doesn’t get dirty or absorb the smell from his feet. Then begins the fun---he steps to the middle of an edge and then takes five steps back and five steps forward. In this way, he slowly but surely, covers the entire surface. To get data, researchers used Google’s Ngram Viewer to analyze the words found in all English-language publications from 1800 to 2000. Entering a word into the viewer will show how frequently it occurs within the massive corpus(语料库)of books around the world.‎ According to the data, this shift was further strengthened around World War I. Since ‎ then, English-language publications have preferred “gray” and “flavor” instead of “grey” and “flavour”. The American spelling has continued to grow over the years, with “liter” passing “liter” around 1900, and “center” becoming the more common choice over “centre” in 1913. “1913 marked a turning point in British spelling, as the American alternative became more frequently used in literature,” the post explains, in regard to “center”. This was just a year before the beginning of World War I, which many views as a key period in America’s rise to superpower status.‎ Though this switched again between 1920s and the late 1930s, the American, spelling took over for good around 1940, during which time the spelling “airplane” shifted dramatically over “aeroplane”.‎ Ever since the middle of the 19th century, even the British Isles have slowly rejected the old spelling. Nowadays, around 65% of the world’s population drives on the right of the road, while the rest is used to driving on the left.‎ Though no one knows the exact reasons, it seems likely that people in ancient times travelled on the left. Roman coins show pictures of horsemen passing on each other’s right. And right-hand people generally got on a horse from the animal’s left. Obviously, it’s safer to do this at the left side of the road, and it makes sense for the horse to be ridden on the left.‎ A change happened in the late 1700s. When Napoleon conquered nations, he forced them to ‎ travel on the right side of the road, which spread left-hand driving throughout Europe. However, Britain still stuck with the right-hand driving rule and countries which were part of the British Empire (帝国) were made to follow. This is why India, Australia and the former British colonies (殖民地) in Africa continue to drive on the left. One exception is Egypt, as that country was defeated by Napoleon before becoming part of the British Empire.‎ Some countries changed sides’ until modem times. Sweden only moved to driving on the right in 1967 and Iceland changed the following year. Ghana changed sides in 1974. On September 7,2009, Samoa became the third country ever to change from left-to-right-hand driving for the reason that it made it easier to import (进口) cheap cars from right-hand driving Japan, Australia and New Zealand.‎ So if you want to travel to another country or go on business, make sure you know whether it is left-or right- hand driving to avoid unnecessary troubles.‎ ‎1.
