I waited in the line at the Starbucks counter while he shopped around to pick up a few things. As I was waiting there I noticed an elderly woman, with untidy hair, wearing layers upon layers of old clothing, hunchbacked (弯背的) behind me in line. She had a few things for washing and seemed to want the Starbucks cashier to ring up since that queue was shorter than the queues in the store. At some point I felt her moving slowly closer behind me—closer than I was comfortable with! I instinctively (本能地) placed a hand over my purse and drew it close to me. My fear and imagination raced creating wild stories about this homeless woman who might try to steal money from me. Then it was my turn to order. As the cashier rang up my total, I discovered I was 67 cents short. I called my father but he was hard of hearing. He asked me to repeat what I said but he still couldn’t make me out. At that point, a long, gray arm, with holes in its sleeves, reached over from behind me. She laid 67 cents out on the counter, saying, “Here, we all need some help sometimes.” I was stunned! Here was a woman who clearly had very little to give and was in great need herself. I had judged her wrongly and she had offered to reach out to help me! What an amazing gift and lesson this woman gave me about judging others! Thank you, God! 24. From the passage, we can infer that the elderly woman__________. . The underlined word “stunned” in paragraph 5 probably means________. A. surprised B. happy C. angry D. disappointed 27. What lesson does the writer learn from the story? A. We should look at things from two sides. B. It’s wise to give help to those in need. C. The world is full of love and surprises. D. Never judge a person from his/her appearance. C For many years, people in American cities have depended on farmers in rural areas to grow fruits and vegetables. But now a new generation of farmers is planting crops in urban areas. Sean Conroe is a college student. Amber Banks is a teacher. They both like farming and gardening. They wanted to start a farm in the middle of Seattle. “There are a lot of neighborhoods that don’t have access to healthy, fresh produce. And if they do, it can be very expensive. So we see unused space as a great place to grow food that will make it more accessible for people,” says Amber Banks. Sean Conroe created a website to get volunteers and donations(捐赠). Within a week, they were offered a piece of land between two houses. He says twenty volunteers worked for six weekends to turn the grassy land into a farm. They call their project Alleycat Acres. They have harvested about ninety kilograms of produce so far. They have donated most of it to local food banks that feed hungry people in Seattle. One of the goals of the urban farm is to show city people the joys of growing food. The Alleycat Acres invites school groups to the farm to help out. And Amber Banks says they want the same people who get food donations to learn how to work the soil. Sean Conroe says Alleycat Acres is expanding to other empty areas of Seattle. So are a lot of other urban farming groups. But the growth of these farms is limited. That is because Seattle, like a lot of other cities, has restrictions(限制)on urban farms. The City Council is now considering changing those laws. 28. The project Alleycat Acres is started mainly to _______. A. let students enjoy the pleasure of growing crops. B. make city people realize the importance of farming. C. provide poor city people with fresh fruits and vegetables. D. teach college students the skills of farming and gardening. 29. Which of the following can best describe the project Alleycat Acres right now? A. Hopeless B. Successful C. Impractical D. Unexpected 30. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________. A. the progress of the project will meet with difficulties. B. the project will get little support from the government. C. agriculture plays an important role in the city of Seattle. D. urban farms won’t have a great future. 31. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Volunteers and Donations Needed for City Projects B. Farming Skills Necessary to City People C. Seattle—City of Farming and Gardening D. Farming in the City: the Joys of Growing Food D I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that’s impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the most hard-working people I have ever met. In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I have been teaching for a year here. The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiangyang I live in isn’t large and I live better. Non-imported(非进口的) foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese people value education. However, it is reported that many children can’t afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education. When we read news of China in the West, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles(奇迹) have not reached many areas of China, we also have the same problems. When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same: “We are not worse or better than each other; we are only different.” 32. What does the author think of Chinese people? A. He praises most Chinese people a lot. B. He thinks most Chinese people are proud. C. He thinks most Chinese people hardly work. D. He dislikes most Chinese people. 33. What is the author doing in China? A. He is on his summer vacation.B. He is teaching English in a school. C. He is studying in a college.D. He is on business. 34. What are not cheap in China in the author’s opinion? A. Clothes and shoes made in China. B. Local foods C. Public transportation tickets. D. Imported foods 35. We can infer from the passage that the author thinks________. A. the westerners have got to know China well B. China’s economic miracles have appeared everywhere C. the education in rural areas is never cared about in the US. D. the progress of China is seldom reported in the US 第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Family traditions are things that families do together on a regular basis. 36 They can be repeated daily, weekly, monthly or once a year. It is important for families to celebrate their traditions even as their children get older. Here are reasons to celebrate family traditions: Family traditions create good feelings and special moments to remember. They are fun things to do. 37 These are the memories that will last a lifetime. 38 Being part of a family is more than living in the same home or having the same last time. It is about relationships and family bonds(联系). Since family traditions are something you do together, they strengthen the bonds you have between each other creating a stronger sense of belonging to the family. Family traditions help teens a lot when they are trying to figure out who they are, which job teenagers often do. A family encourages a teen to be a part of it and its traditions provide a strong foundation for teens to stand on. 39 40 Every day teens face some very difficult issues. Knowing that they are secure(安全的) and have a family to turn to is a powerful tool to use against negative peer pressure, drug use influences, etc. A. Family traditions offer teens a sense of security. B. Family traditions help parents inform their children of the family’s values. C. It’ s very important when they’re searching for and defining their sense of self. D. Family traditions give every member of the family a strong sense of belonging. E.
