Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboos (禁忌) in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about their family and are sure to show pictures of their children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting — and they can cover pretty much or any topic — as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent (智慧的) manner.‎ In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious (和谐的) business relationship they're trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children.‎ As a general rule, it's best not to talk about politics or religion (宗教) with your business friends.‎ ‎ This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one's salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host's team.‎ ‎21.The author considers politics and religion______.‎ A.taboos B.cheerful topics C.rude topics D.too serious ‎22.We typically talk about_____in a friendly way in most places according to the author.‎ A.families B.children C.personal feelings D.sports ‎23.Why are people from Asia more private in their conversation with others?‎ A.They don't want to talk with others much.‎ B.They are afraid to argue with their colleagues.‎ C.They don't want to have their good relationship with others harmed by informal conversation.‎ D.They want to keep their feelings to themselves.‎ ‎24.In which country may it be suitable to talk about the family with your business friends?‎ A.In France. B.In the USA. C.In Korea. D.In Saudi Arabia.‎ B Mayor Bill de Blasio designated (指定) the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday in New York City in June, 2015.‎ The move came after de Blasio in March, 2015 declared school holidays on the mostobserved holidays in Islam, Eid alFitr and Eid alAdha. De Blasio, making_good_on a promise made during his 2013 mayoral campaign, said students would also have a day off on the Lunar New Year, and not long ago the Asian holiday took place on February 8, 2016.‎ ‎“About 15% of the city's school system is of Asian descent (血统), and many students have been taking the day off as a sick day,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “It's a big deal,” he said, whose district includes Manhattan's Chinatown. “Families have had to choose between their most important cultural celebration and missing a day of school.”‎ The city's Department of Education had been working on the practical arrangements for adding another holiday while maintaining the legal 180 school days. The problem was solved by combining ‎ two half days that previously did not count towards the total to form a single full day that can be counted towards the total. After San Francisco, New York is the second major urban school district to add the Lunar New Year to the official school calendar.‎ ‎“This holiday is not about kids just getting a day off from school,” said Assemblyman Ron Kim. “It's about the City of New York telling hundreds of AsianAmerican societies that America is a cultural melting pot.” Kim said recognizing the holiday is one way of pushing back against feelings of isolation and marginalization (边缘化) felt by the AsianAmerican community.‎ ‎25.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ A.Make use of. B.Keep up with. C.Stand by. D.Go against.‎ ‎26.How does New York make the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday?‎ A.By cancelling a legal 1day holiday.‎ B.By adding a new full day to the school calendar.‎ C.By copying the way of San Francisco.‎ D.By changing the legal 180 school days.‎ ‎27.What do we know from Ron Kim's words?‎ A.He's opposed to the new school holiday.‎ B.Asian culture is valued most in New York.‎ C.The holiday wipes out Asian Americans' isolation.‎ D.Asian culture is part of the American society.‎ ‎28.What's the best title for this passage?‎ A.A revolution of the Lunar New Year in New York B.A promise made by the mayor of New York C.Cultural differences between America and Asia D.A new public school holiday in New York C Scientists in Argentina have created the world's first cow with two human genes that will enable it to produce humanlike milk.‎ Genetic engineering was used to introduce the “mothers' milk” genes into the animal before birth, according to the National Institute of Agribusiness Technology in Buenos Aires.‎ As an adult, the cloned cow “will produce milk that is similar to that of humans”, which will prove “a development of great importance for the nutrition of infants (婴儿)”, said the institute. “The cloned cow, named Rosita ISA, is the first in the world with two human genes that contain the proteins present in human milk,” said the statement.‎ In April, scientists in China published details of research showing that they had created dairy cows which produced milk containing proteins found in human breast milk. But the Argentine team said the Chinese only introduced one human gene, while their research involved two, meaning the milk will more_closely_resemble that of humans.‎ ‎“Our goal was to raise the nutrition value of cows' milk by adding two human genes, which do good to the immune system of infants,” said Adrian Mutto, from the National University of San Martin which worked with the institute.‎ Cristina Kirchner, President of Argentina, said the scientific institute made all Argentines proud. She also said that she had rejected the “honor” of having the cow named after her. “They came to tell me that the name is Cristina, but what woman would like to have a cow named after her? It appeared to me to be more proper to call it Rosita.”‎ ‎29.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.A cloned cow to produce humanlike milk.‎ B.Ways to improve mothers' milk.‎ C.The importance of genetic engineering.‎ D.Advanced agricultural technology in Argentina.‎ ‎30.Which of the following can best replace “more closely resemble” in Paragraph 4?‎ A.have more varieties than B.have more nutrition than C.be more similar to D.be more different from ‎31.What can be inferred from Cristina Kirchner's statements?‎ A.She was quite satisfied with the research done by the institute.‎ B.She considered it an honor to name the special cow.‎ C.She felt it improper to be named after the cow.‎ D.She refused to give a name to the cow out of selfrespect.‎ D Whether it is Mozart or Miley, your choice of music could determine whether you will perform well at your job. A new study suggests that listening to music in the office improves the speed and accuracy of tasks such as data entry, proofreading and problem solving. In an officebased experiment, 88 per cent of participants were found to produce their most accurate work when listening to music.‎ The study also found that 81 per cent completed their work fastest when music was played. And it matters what type of music you listen to. For instance, if you're doing your tax returns, then classical music is the most effective as it improves maths skills.‎ Listening to Jessie J or Justin Bieber could also improve your speed, with 58 per cent of participants completing data entry tasks faster while listening to pop songs. During proofreading, dance music, such as David Guetta, had the biggest positive impact with participants increasing their speed by 20 per cent compared to tests undertaken with no music at all. Dance music also had a positive effect on spellchecking with a 75 per cent pass rate compared to 68 per cent when no music was played at all.‎ The research, undertaken by Brightonbased Mindlab International, suggests that silent offices may be the least productive. The Music Works experiment revealed (揭示) a positive correlation between music and productivity.Overall, it showed that when listening to music, nine out of ten people performed better, said Dr David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International.‎ ‎32.Whose music can help you do maths homework according to the study?‎ A.The music of Justin Bieber.‎ B.The music of Mozart.‎ C.The music of David Guetta.‎ D.The music of David Lewis.‎ ‎33.Which of the following is NOT mentioned according to the passage?‎ A.Music makes you relaxed.‎ B.Music helps you to enter data faster.‎ C.Music improves maths skills.‎ D.Music has a positive effect on spellchecking.‎ ‎34.The result of the experiment showed that when music was played, ________.‎ A.88% of people worked faster B.81% of people did their most accurate work C.90% of people worked better D.75% of people completed data entry task faster ‎35.What can we conclude from the passage?‎ A.Music may be helpless to people in office.‎ B.Silent offices can make people work better.‎ C.Different kinds of music have the same effect.‎ D.Silent offices may make people work least profitably.‎ E As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have.It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven.Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.‎ Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for.Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.‎ Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz.They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs(郊区), leaving their two children with a nanny(保姆).Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.‎ Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales.“I always wanted to have a farm here,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it.We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”‎ Liz, however, is not quite sure.“I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours.I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”‎ ‎36.What do the first two paragraphs tell us?‎ A.People seldom work long hours to make money.‎ B.People hardly buy more things than necessary.‎ C.People are sure everything they own is in the right place.‎ D.People realise there is more to life than just making money.‎ ‎37.When Daniel was a reporter he .‎ A.lived in central London B.disliked his job C.missed his children D.was well paid ‎38.Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm .‎ A.was easy to organise B.was extremely expensive C.has improved family life D.has been a total success ‎39.What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?‎ A.Child-caring. Some students think Internet Slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humor and intelligence. Besides, it makes chatting on the Internet quicker.‎ However, some other students think Internet Slang lacks depth of thought and is too simple. Also, it is hard to understand and not accepted by most people. The words sometimes might make people confused, even resulting in misunderstanding.‎ Every coin has two sides. In my opinion, living in the Information Age, if we don’t know the Internet Slang, we seem to fall behind the times. As I told you, the country schoolhouse was three miles from my uncle's farm. You wouldn't imagine that there would be a school in the woods, would you? The house held about 24 boys and girls at that time. We attended the school once or twice a week in summer. We walked there in the cool of the morning by the forest paths, and back late in the afternoon. All the pupils brought their dinners in baskets------corn cakes, milk, and other good things. We sat in the shade of the trees at noon and ate them. It's the part of my education that I look back upon with the most satisfaction. You know how old I was when I came to this school for the first time? I was seven. I can still remember what happened that day. A fifteen — year old girl stopped me at the gate and asked me if I "got used to tobacco" meaning . .. "did I smoke". I said no. She made faces at me and made fun of me to the crowd, and said, "here is a girl seven years old who can't smoke."‎ Look at the wall here. Do you see all these names "Lefty", that's me. I got the name when I was four. I used my left hand more often when I was young. Well, that was sixty years ago.‎ ‎ ‎
