A Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You've located the country's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers. History This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid's most beautiful building. Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms. Art The Internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings. Shopping Madrid has some of Europe's best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs. Entertainment No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike. Food Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m., it's difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon, a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it. 1. What do we know about the Royal Palace in Madrid? A. It has 50 rooms for visit. B. It can hold 2, 800 people. C. It's been visited by 3 million people. D. It is thought to be the largest in Europe. 2. What kind of market is “the Rastro”? A. For discount. B. For artworks. C. To sell various goods. D. To sell antiques and CDs. 3. What is a must when travelling in Madrid? A. Having dinner earlier. B. Enjoying flamenco. C. Visiting Prado Museum. D. Drinking in a tapas bar. A 2. C 3. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms可知马德里的the Royal Palace可以提供50个房间给游客参观。 But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs. No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco. B Why do you go to the library? For books, yes—but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else’s life. At one type of library you can do just that—even though there’s not a single book. At a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people. People with unique life stories volunteer to be the “books.” For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating as any you can find in a book. (If you attend, be sure to review the habits that make you a good listener.) Many of the stories have to do with some kind of depressing topic. You can speak with a refugee, a soldier suffering from PTSD(创伤后遗症), a homeless person and a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to take time to truly get to know and learn from someone they might otherwise make a snap judgement about. According to its website, the Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.” The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000.Romni Abergel and his colleagues hosted a four—day event during a major Northern European festival. After the success of this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, hoping to raise awareness among youth about depression, which has been growing ever since. Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren’t places at all, but events. Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don’t need a library card—anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio. Check out the organization’s Facebook page to see when the Human Library might be arriving near you. 4 What shall we do before going to the Human Library? A. Bring a book. B. Get a library card. C. Make an appointment. D. Go over some listening habits. 5. What does the underlined word “snap” in paragraph 2 mean? A. True B. Quick. C. Wrong. D. Obvious. 6. Why did Ronmi Abergel found the Human Library Organization? A. He expected to answer different questions. B. He successfully held an event in Northern Europe. C. He wanted young people to pay attention to depression. D. He had set up the Human Libraries all over the world. 7. What is the best title of the text? A. “Borrow” People Instead of Books B. Human Library Organization C. Human Library Is Near You D. A Library in Denmark 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第二段中的“ If you attend, make sure to review the habits that make you a good listener.” 根据第二段中的“The Human Library encourages people to take time to truly get to know and learn from someone they might otherwise make a snap judgement about.” take time to为固定短语,表示“慢慢地做某事”。 根据第三段中的“Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, hoping to raise awareness among youth about depression, which has been growing ever since.” C Poets, songwriters and left-wing politicians hate the idea, but for decades, opinion-poll evidence has been clear: money buys happiness and the richer you are, the more likely you are to express satisfaction with your life. Until now, a survey of 43 countries published on October 30th by the Pew Research Centre shows that people in emerging markets are within a whisker of(一步之遥) expressing the same level of satisfaction as people in rich countries. It is in line with the standard view of happiness and income seen so far. According to the survey, in 2007, 57%of respondents in rich countries regarded themselves as happy; in emerging markets the share was 33% ; in poor countries only 16%-a classic expression of the standard view. But in 2017,54% of rich-country respondents counted themselves as happy, whereas in emerging markets the percentage jumped to 51%. The sharp increase happened thanks to huge improvements in countries such as Indonesia(+35) and Pakistan(+22).In 12 of the 24 emerging markets, half or more people rate their life satisfaction in the top of the ladder. This is not to say the link between income and satisfaction has been snapped. Poor countries still lag behind: only a quarter of the people there count themselves as happy-half the level of the other two groups. There is also a clear link between happiness and income growth. China’s GDP rose at an annual average rate of 10% in 2007-2017 and its happiness level rose 26 points. Within countries, richer people express more satisfaction than their poorer neighbors. The study divided respondents into categories with higher and lower incomes and fewer and more household goods. In every country in every group, richer folk with more goods expressed higher levels of happiness. So at a personal level, money does buy happiness. And if you ask people about different aspects of their lives-health, family life, religion, standard of living-it turns out that satisfaction with living standards still has the biggest influence on happiness. 8. What led to the increase of happiness in emerging markets? A. Economic downturn. B. Investment in emerging markets. C. Their rapid development. D. More cooperation with rich countries. 9. What's the purpose of the writer by mentioning China's GDP? A. To show that there is a link between happiness and income growth. B. To remind readers of the great progress that China has made. C. To express the author's concern about the development of emerging markets. D. To prove that China's GDP growth contributed to the happiness of people in Asia. 10. What's the standard view of happiness and income? A. Income is not closely related to happiness. B. Happiness does not depend on how much money you earn. C. The higher your income is, the more likely you will feel satisfied. D. The more you are satisfied, the more you can earn every month. 11. What is the author's attitude to the standard view of happiness and income? A. Disappointed. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive. C 9. A 10. C 11. 由第二段“But in 2017,...,whereas in emerging markets the percentage jumped to 51%." 和第三段" the sharp increase happened thanks to huge improvements in countries such as ...“但这种融合的发生得益于一些国家的巨大进步,比如……” 由文章倒数第二段“There is also a clear link between happiness and income growth." 故选A项。 Opinion-poll evidence has been clear: money buys happiness and the richer you are, the more likely you are to express satisfaction with your life." 根据最后一段中的“..at a personal level, money does buy happiness."以及"...the biggest influence on happiness." 本题第2小题,由文章倒数第二段“There is also a clear link between happiness and income growth." 故选A项。 D One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are. When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our culture. The root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, and it just is it.” In one of my books, I said “You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned”. Some readers said it’s too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. However, it’s only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as bad. Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is. This can be applied to whatever you do: how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be. Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way. It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say, “Oh. I wish bad things didn’t happen!” Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all. But change things not because you can’t accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing. Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world. That’s the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results. 12. The author believes that we feel unhappy maybe because ________. A. it is our natural emotion in the life B. culture asks us to be different from others C. everyone has their own opinions on things D. we dislike something in the beginning 13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to? A. Acting well at work and in politics. B. Feeling depressed for the news media. C. Accepting and understanding what has happened. D. Saying something negative when bad things come. 14. What are you advised according to the last paragraph? A. Help others and make a difference. B. Enjoy what you have to do in the work. C. Judge yourself and make a wish for you. D. Try a new way when making the world better. 15. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Accepting can make our life happier and better. B. Expecting things to be different gives us hope. C. Traditional culture becomes root of unhappiness. D. Judging good or bad is important for our world. D 13. C 14. D 15. One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are. Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way. It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say, “Oh. Can we make this world a better place?以及最后when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results. One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.和最后一段中try a different approach: accept, and understand. 故选A。 One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.和最后一段中try a different approach: accept, and understand. 故选A。 How to protect your privacy when you travel It hasn't been an easy year for the privacy of travelers,at least so far.Data leaks, surveillance(监视)worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious. ___16___ Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air. These tips can help you deal with these troubles. ___17___ "It's not clever to declare on Facebook that you're traveling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,"says Danny McLoughlin."That puts your security at risk."Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos. There are other people on the other side of the wall. F. Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address. G. Report anything doubtful to the host immediately-and if you don't like what you hear, leave. B 17. D 18. G 19. F 20. 根据前文Data leaks, surveillance(监视)worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious. B项Perhaps they should be.(或许他们应该如此。) 根据后文“It's not clever to declare on Facebook that you're traveling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty, ”says Danny McLoughlin.(Danny McLoughlin说:“在Facebook上宣布你要去某个地方旅行,提醒很多人你的房子是空的,这并不聪明. Never broadcast your journey on social media.(永远不要在社交媒体上发布你的旅程. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren't in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep. Report anything doubtful to the host immediately-and if you don't like what you hear, leave.(如果有任何可疑之处,请立即向房主报告,如果您不喜欢你听到的,离开。) Although you can't control how a hotel or airline handles-or mishandles-your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won't get you into trouble. Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O. box instead of a home address.(有些旅客只提供最低限度的服务,例如邮政信箱,而不是家庭住址。) Just to be sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control. 并且由空格前的 why(为什么?) There are other people on the other side of the wall.(墙的另一边还有其他人。) Hunter Shamatt lost his wallet while he was on a flight from Omaha to Denver earlier this month. I was used to the seat behind the driver. However, that day I sat on a seat in the middle and a boy was seated next to me and he was carrying a great many suitcases. He turned to me suddenly and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. He said warmly, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, isn't it?" I remember saying to myself-this must be one of those typical people who is young and just thinks everything in the world is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I answered, “Really perfect! Did your dear parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?” “No, I don't have parents and I'm not here for vacation.” He shook his head instantly, “I'm here to achieve my biggest dream.
