Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting where schools expect them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn. Keith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was their parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the tasks."They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice." Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.zx.x.k Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success. "A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives." 1. The underlined expression "parental involvement" in paragraph 1 probably means _______. A. parents' participation in children's education B. parents' expectation on children's health C. Parents' plan for children's future D. parents' control over children's life 2. What is the major finding of Robinson's study? A. Parents are not able to help with children's homework. B. Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected. C. Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging. D. Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way. 3. The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should _______. A. help children realize the importance of schooling B. take a more active part in school management C. set a specific life goal for their children D. spend more time improving their own lives B Many years ago, when I was in high school and working weekends to pay for the extras that my folks couldn’t really afford, I lost my wallet. As I pulled into his driveway, I noticed his handicapped van(残疾人车)and the ramp(斜坡)going up to the house I was thinking that there was no way this man easily got out of his van and got my wallet off the street. He had to pull over, get in his wheelchair, lower the lift, and then pick it up. I was just surprised. I felt grateful. I knocked on the door and he told me to come in. I thanked him like 10 times for finding my wallet. I was stuck , though. I didn’t want to insult him by offering money, I really felt like offering something. so I asked him if there was anything I could do to repay his kindness, and he said “Just pass it on”. I said I would be certain to do that. I was raised to be honest in any circumstance(状况) and I would have done so, without promising this fellow I would, but I wanted to repay his kindness, so I willingly promised I would. 4. What did the man ask the writer to do? A. He asked the writer to be careful B. He asked the writer to pass his kindness on C. He asked the writer to repay his kindness D. He asked the writer to be honest 5. What can we learn from the man’s action? A. Where there is a will, there’s a way B. A friend in need is a friend indeed C. Good is rewarded with good D. Help others, but not ask for anything 6. Which of the following can best describe the man who picked up the writer’s wallet? A. Loyal B. Honest C. Noble D. So he said, ‘Welcome aboard!’ 故选A。 Now, Shay was scheduled to take the ______ winning run.〔现在Shay被安排在有赢得往垒包跑的可能(potential潜能,潜力,可能)的这一棒〕。" 7.A 根据本句 "At this very moment, do they let Shay bat and _____ their chance to win the game?〔就在这个时刻,他们会让Shay上场打击而失去(give away赠送,泄露,失去) 赢得比赛的机会吗?〕" 的意思可知A项符合语境之意。故选A。 Shay (Shay was given the bat),所以说非常令人吃惊(Surprisingly令人惊奇的是)。故选C。 9.B 根据前后句 "Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible ______ Shay didn’t even know to hold the bat properly.(大家都知道Shay根本不可能打到球,因为(because)他甚至不知道正确地握球棒。) 11.D 根据本句 " _______, as Shay stepped up, the pitcher, realizing the _____ team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, threw the ball softly.〔然而当Shay往前走的时候,投手意识到对方的(opposing)球队为了Shay生命中重要的这一刻已经放下赢球的机会了,于是他就软软地投了这个球。 12.C 根据上句和本句 "So Shay could ______ be able to make contact.(这样Shay至少(at least)能碰一下球。) Shay swung clumsily and hit a _____ ground ball right back to the pitcher,…〔Shay笨拙的挥棒并且打出一个慢速的(slow)滚地球,直直的滚向投手。 故选A。 Shay swung clumsily and hit a ______ ground ball right back to the pitcher, who purposely threw the ball out of _____ of all team-mates. "可知who引导的是定语从句,它的先行词是 pitcher(投手),再根据从句 "who purposely threw the ball out of _____ of all team-mates. 16.A 根据句子 "And then, ____his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, the third, the home…〔然后Shay喘口气(catch his breath)跌跌撞撞地跑向二垒、三垒、本垒……〕"的意思可知catch one’s breath 喘口气(屏息)是固定搭配,且符合语境的意思。故选A。 17.D 根据句子 "Shay was cheered ____ the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team! 18.C 根据句子 "And for the first time, he was so ___of himself making his father so happy.〔他第一次为他自己感到那么自豪(proud),这使他的父亲那么高兴。〕" 的意思可知’be proud of 为…… 19.A 根据最后一段的句子 "_____ a physically handicapped child like Shay comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human ______ presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child.〔当像Shay这样有残缺的孩子来到这个世界的时候(when 当…… 20.B 根据最后一段的句子 "_____ a physically handicapped child like Shay comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human ______ presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child.〔当像Shay这样有残缺的孩子来到这个世界的时候(when 当…… Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help,可知parental involvement指的是父母参与孩子的教育。所以选A。 2. 根据第三段but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives. B And everything unfamiliar is scary? 本空前的“There is no other feeling like the victory you feel that makes you realize you won.” 根据本段的小标题“Fear is part of lift, and doesn’t need to be eliminated”恐惧是提高的一部分,不需要被消除。而与D. We don’t need to remove fear from our lives 的意思是一致的,故选D。 Yesterday was my father’s birthday. We made many for it. Early in the morning, my mother and I set off for the department store to find gift for Father. We chose very , eventually a warm sweater our eye was purchased. To my love for my father, I made a birthday cake the help of my mother. In the evening, we got together to celebrate birthday. With candles lit, we sang happy birthday out loud and clapped, made the room alive with the sound of cheering. Then we a family photo to record the happy moment.
