They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the conflict broke out, the son went to war. He died in battle while rescuing another soldier. A month later, A young man came with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, I’m the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He often talked about your love for art.” The young man held out his package. “I know I’m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.” The father found it was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. The father died a few months later. There was to be a great auction (拍卖) of his paintings. On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel (槌). “We will start the bidding with this portrait of the son. There was silence. Then a voice from the back shouted. “We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.” But the auctioneer persisted. $100, $200?” Another voice shouted angrily. “We didn’t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!” But still the auctioneer continued. Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. “I’ll give $10.” Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. “We have $10, who will bid $20?” “$10 is the bid, won’t someone bid $20?” The crowd was becoming angry. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!” A man sitting on the second row shouted, “Now let’s get on with the collection!” The auctioneer laid down his gavel. “I’m sorry, the auction is over. The Collection of the Father and His Son C The Internet has become part of our extended intelligence, and we are coming to depend on it. For most of us, the answer to about anything is a few keystrokes away. Now psychologists in the US have provided evidence that our minds have become accustomed to looking at the Internet when we want to find the answer to a question. Dr Betsy Sparrow of Columbia University and her colleagues report their work in this week's Science magazine. They also show that we are much better at remembering where we might find a piece of information than remembering the information itself. In the experiment, participants were given a list of 40 trivia(各种科目的知识)statements and asked to type them into a computer. Half were told the information would be saved, while the other half were told it would be erased. After completing the typing task, all participants were instructed to write down as many trivia statements as they could recall. The researchers found those participants who were told what they typed would be erased recalled more statements than those who weren't. "Participants apparently did not make the effort to remember when they thought they could later look up the trivia statements they had read," they wrote. Betsy Sparrow thinks the the internet is being used as a form of "memory system" — a store of information outside our own brain, which we can access. In a separate experiment, Sparrow shows that people are much better at remembering the computer folder where a piece of trivia information has been stored than the information itself. "This is preliminary (初步的)evidence that when people expect information to remain continuously available, we are more likely to remember where to find it than to remember the details of an item," Dr Betsy sparrow says. 28. What does this paragraph mainly tell us? A. Searching engines is replacing our memory. B. Engines are more useful than human's memory. C. Using engines is more convenient than anything else. D. Human's memory will be replaced by engines in the future. 29. When we want to find the answer to a question, most of us would _____ according to the passage. A.go to the library to look up it in books. B.usually go and discuss it with others. C.usually search it on the Internet. D.try to solve it by ourselves. 30. According to the experiment, the researchers found ______. A. Most participants can remember what they have typed. B. Most people are poor at remembering what they have to. C. People tried to remember what they typed, but they couldn't. D.People who were told what they typed would be erased remembered more statements than those who weren't. 31. From the text we know that _______ in the future. A. Computers will be widely used. B. Computers can help humans do whatever humans want to. C. Humans will use computers rather than brains to memorize daily chores. D. With the help of computers, humans don't have to memorize anything they need. D An interesting bit of research was done with pigeons. A pigeon was put in a box with two levers (操作杆). One lever would set free corn with every five pecks. The other lever needed 100 pecks. Which lever would the pigeon choose to peck at? The lever that set free corn more frequently, of course. People respond similarly. We prefer to receive more frequent rewards. That is the reason why projects ate more effectively completed when broken down into smaller parts. For example, if you have a work project needed to be finished three months later, you are likely to tell yourself that you have plenty of time and end up putting off the work until the last few weeks. Unexpected occasions happen and the project is pushed back even further. The result is a project that is rushed and not done as completely and well as it should have been. If, however, the project is broken down into three smaller parts and you’re required to hand in a part at the end of each of the three months, there won’t be a rush at the end to complete it. One part will be done after only a month and you will have the feeling of achievement, which will spur you to begin the second part. At the end of the second month, the project is to complete. This gives you the time to review it and make any change for improvement. You can truly celebrate a project well done. Celebrating small achievements is important to enjoying what you do. Looking forward to the appearance of corn on a frequent basis keeps you active to do more. What does your corn look like? Maybe you are like me and prefer to give yourself an actual reward after completing a project. If your corn really exists, the important thing is that you get it frequently. Remember, reward yourself for small achievements and you can live your life to the fullest. 32. What role do the levers play in the research? A. They control the corn’s appearing. B. They stop the pigeon from eating corn. C. They help the pigeon get out of the box. D. They are connected to the door of the box. 33. What will probably happen if you’re allowed to finish a task in a long time? A. You may expect others to help you. B. You won’t be patient to continue it. C. It won’t be finished as well as expected. D. It will appear more and more difficult and boring. 34. What does the underlined word “spur” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Warn. B. Forbid. C. Remind. D. Encourage. 35. What dies the writer mainly talk about in the last paragraph? A. How to set rewards wisely in life. B. How to keep active in your work. C. The benefit of rewarding yourself frequently. D. The importance of finishing your project on time. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Getting along with Parents Parents are the most important people in your life, and they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else in your lifetime. It’s a parent’s job to love and guide kids, and most parents will do this as long as they live. 36 Here are four ways you can stay close, get along, and build a strong relationship. Spend time together. It might be easy to be physically in the same place with your parents. 37 Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV by yourself, maybe you should ask your mom and dad to play with you. You can go outside together, try a board game, or read a book together. 38 Many kids say they would like their parents to help them when they’re upset. But your parents might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell your parents if you’re sad or struggling with something. If you don’t usually do this, give it a try and you will be glad. Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your parents. 39 It’s also lovely when a kid offers to help fold the laundry or cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be so excited! Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. 40 In addition to kisses and hugs, kids and parents can show their love by respecting each other, being caring, polite, and thoughtful. A. Share your feelings and ask for help. B. It’s important to show that you care for each other. C. Talk on the phone and email each other to stay in touch. D. But parents do a lot more than just pass down their hobbies. E. You can brighten your parents’ day with a hug, a card or a joke. F. That means you have many years ahead to share with your parents. G.
