He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability he made himself to be known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird. But Alex, a parrot, died two weeks ago when he was 34. Irene, a psychologist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for more than 30 years. In 1977, Irene, then an excellent student in chemistry at Harvard, bought Alex from a pet store. At that time, scientists were not quite sure whether birds could learn to speak with humans. But using the ways of teaching, Irene helped Alex to count small numbers, and to learn about 150 words, as well as colors and shapes. In the lab, Irene would give Alex small reward, like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what Irene was doing to get it. Irene then worked with the bird to help him with pronunciation. Alex learnt very fast. For example, when he was shown a blue paper circle, he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it, what it was made of. Like other parrots, he also picked up some words when staying in the lab, like “calm down” or “good morning”. What’s more, he could also show his happiness and sadness. Even before the week he died, Alex was working with Irene on difficult words. As she put him into his cage for the night that Thursday, Irene said that Alex looked at her and said, “You are good. See you tomorrow. I love you. ” He was found dead in his cage the next morning. 24. Alex is the name of __________. A. an excellent student B. a clever bird C. an experienced teacher D. an old psychologist 25. How did Irene get the parrot? A. A friend gave it to her. B. She caught it in a forest. C. She bought it from a pet store. D. We don’t know. 26. The best title of the passage could be“__________”. A. A clever parrot B. The owner of a parrot C. How to teach a parrot to speak D. Parrots, our close friends 27. The passage is probably taken from __________. A. a history textbook B. a novel C. a newspaper D. a dictionary C So many of us hold on to little complaints that may have come from an argument, a misunderstanding, the way we were raised, or some other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us — believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship. A friend of mine, recently told me that she hadn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she said, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize.” After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case, when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins. Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right. You’ll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right,” they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But, if for some reason they don’t, that’s okay too. You’ll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself. 28. The underlined word “rekindle” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______. A. recover B. develop C. accept D. replace 29. In the author’s opinion, we hold on to our anger often because we think ______. A. we can turn small issues into big ones B. our own opinions matter most C. our positions are higher than others D. others will be less defensive 30. The best thing to do after a quarrel is to_________. A. let go of our own rights B. realize that you are wrong C. apologize to others first D. expect others to give in 31. What is the main idea of the passage? A. People should keep peaceful when facing small stuff. B. It’s necessary to enjoy our friendship and family relationship. C. We should tell apart small and big stuff in our daily life. D. Reaching out and apologizing wins one peace and happiness. D Can small, organic agriculture really feed the world? Won't we need science to produce enough food as the world population is growing to 9 billion by 2050? The answer to both questions is YES—but that science may look different than you think. We've been told that the only way we'll be able to feed the growing population is through the science of GM(转基因) crops and chemicals. But the latest scientific studies are saying just the opposite. In study after study, the message about agriculture is: To feed the world, we need to support sustainable agriculture on different, local, family farms that work with nature. In 2008, an international study found that sustainable agriculture, not GM crops, shows more hope of ending hunger. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Technology for Development (known as the IAASTD), calls for a change of the world's food and farming systems. The Assessment said that industrial agriculture has greatly destroyed the world's soils and other natural resources, and now is doing harm to water, energy, and weather safety. The report warns that expensive, short-term ways—including GM crops—are not likely to cut down long-term hunger, and could even make environmental and social problems worse in many places. A recent report by the UN Environment Program shows that food problems will become more serious because of environmental problems and strongly supports sustainable agriculture on small family farms. It also showed that a worldwide change to organics could actually increase the world's food production by as much as 50%—enough to feed a population of 9 billion people with the land we have now. GM crops, once popular, are now being questioned worldwide. 32. How can we feed the growing population of the world according to the passage? A. In expensive, short-term ways. B. By encouraging industrial agriculture. C. By developing small, organic agriculture. D. Through the science of GM crops and chemicals. 33. We can learn from the last paragraph that there will be no food problems if ___________. A. the world supports sustainable agriculture B. we increase a lot of farm land C. the environmental problems are solved D. all the small family farms are used 34. Which of the following best describe sustainable agriculture? A. The science of GM crops. B. Working on small family farms. C. A fast way to increase the world's food production. D. An approach to agriculture without harming the environment. 35. What might be talked about if there is one more paragraph? A. The causes of food problems. B. The disadvantages of GM crops. C. The development of industrial agriculture. D. The disadvantages of sustainable agriculture. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 People develop nicknames, both friendly and unfriendly, for all sorts of reasons.
