I want to be away from home. I wanted to go somewhere new and exciting. This became the theme of the next twenty years. I'd spend the whole year counting down to my next holiday, and then as soon as I left I'd begin to dread having to return home. Year after year. Ten years ago, I decided to build a life that I didn't want to escape from. I knew I wanted to travel in the long term, but I didn't have a lot of money or savings, and there is no one paying for my adventures. For five years, I did three jobs while studying full-time at university. I didn't eat out and I didn't buy anything I didn't need. I even moved in with my parents. I was able to save $16,000 over those five years, which was enough to keep me on the road for a couple of years. But what if two years wouldn't be enough? Before leaving, I began to spend my time in making plans that would allow me to work anywhere that had an Internet connection. At the time, I was studying for a master degree in physics. While studying, I came up with a list of my interests and skills and began researching into a way to do these anywhere. If I could make money from it and if I could do it online, then it was something worth going after. I created a writing file that would help me to find free writing jobs. I researched English and physics teaching online, and built travel websites to earn income through sales and advertising. Most of these failed, but I didn't give up. The work I do has changed over the years and it's still changing now. Now, I pay my traveling through several different things. I'm the Student Travel Expert for About. com, and a senior writer for Too Many Adapters, a travel technology website. In addition, I will have my first book published this summer. I also offer a travel planning service to help readers prepare for their travels abroad. To reach this point, where I can cover my expenses and travel full-time, it took many years of hard work. For me, the freedom makes it worth it. With everything set in place, finally my dreams came true. 24.What does the underlined word "dread" mean in Paragraph 1? A.consider B.forget C.miss D.fear 25.The author has taken the following jobs except . A.teaching physics in a university B.offering a travel planning service C.placing advertisements online D.free writing on the websites 26.Which of the following best describes the author? A.open-minded B.cold-blooded C.strong-willed D.kind-hearted 27.What is the passage mainly about? A.Why the author desired freedom. B.How the author realized his dream. C.How the author made his living. D.Why the author needed money. C Let’s face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn’t drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don’t lose weight at all. “We weren’t seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us”, said Rogers. So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories. A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas’s school of medicine. “They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.” 28. People drink diet sodas to . A.enjoy its taste B.achieve weight loss C.stay in fashion D.gain more energy 29. The new study suggests that drinking diet sodas . A.makes people much thinner B.helps people to be healthier C.causes people to become heavier D.offers people more calories 30.We can learn from the passage that . A.diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food B.regular sodas make people lose more weight C.diet sodas do help reduce calories D.most blood diseases come from diet sodas 31.The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph probably refers to . A.sweeteners B.diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers C.sodas D.diet sodas and artificial sweeteners D Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28,1926. Since Lee’s mother was mentally ill, she was raised by her father. She became very close to her father. The naughty Lee loved reading, and would make up stories with Truman, her neighbour who was two years older than her. Seeing her daughter’s imagination, Lee’s father gave her a typewriter. Before her final year in the university of Alabama, Lee dropped out to become a writer. She moved to New York City where her childhood friend Truman was already established as a famous writer. While there, she worked on her first book---To Kill a Mockingbird. It won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was made into an Academy Award winning movie the following year. At a young age, Scout is exposed to the terrors of segregation(种族隔离). Then, in 2014, the first draft of a new book---Go Set a Watchman was discovered among Lee’s papers. It is the story of 26-year-old Scout who returns to Maycomb to visit her father. She is shocked to find her father a changed man. Attics has turned into a segregationist! The story shows the mixed feelings Scout has for the changes that have taken place in her hometown and father. A loner for most of her life, Lee stayed unmarried, preferring to lead a small town life. On February 19, 2015, Lee passed away at the age of 89. 32.What can we learn about Lee? That means you're probably experiencing lots of changes, all at once. Your body is changing. It might even seem as if your entire self is changing. It can be confusing and even scary. 36 And it's good! Growing up means that you can do more, learn more, and start to make your mark on the world. In order for that to happen, your body produces chemicals called hormones that help both body and mind grow. Hormone levels change constantly, rising and falling. 37 But it's partly to blame for intense emotions, surprising reactions, and mood swings. Because of the way your brain develops, it is somewhat ruled by emotion now and through your teen years. As a result, growing up can seem like an emotional roller coaster! 38 ▲ Take care of yourself. If you eat right, sleep enough, and get good exercise, your brain will be much more able to deal with the stress. ▲ 39 When you feel your moods swinging or you are upset, or confused, some quiet time will allow you to gather your thoughts and get calmer. ▲ Practice relaxing your body and deep breathing when you wake up and when you go to bed. 40 Plus, when stuff happens during the day, you'll be able to calm yourself quickly with a deep breath or two before you react. A. Take a time-out. B. But the truth is, it happens to every teen. C. Work out regularly to keep physically fit. D. This changing is needed for your body's development. E. It will help you fall asleep and start the morning right. F. Here are a few things you can do to make the ride smoother. G.
