It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.‎ Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?‎ To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.‎ On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science. ‎ ‎21.The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to________.‎ A. show the value of Brooks’s new book B. show where science can be applied C. remind the reader of the importance of science D. explain why many writers use science in their works ‎22.According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?‎ A. Its clear writing.‎ B. Its convincing points.‎ C. Its strong characters. ‎ D. Its strong basis. ‎ ‎23.What is the author’s general attitude towards the book?‎ A. Cautious. ‎ B. Critical.‎ C. Contradictory(矛盾的). ‎ D. Supportive.‎ For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to hand-carry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the water’s edge lest (for fear that) they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. A formidable wall of bureaucracy has been erected to protect their prime nesting on the Atlantic coastlines. With all that attention paid to them, you’d think these creatures would at least have the gratitude not to go extinct (die out).‎ But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. The South Florida nesting population, the largest, has declined by 50% in the last decade, according to Elizabeth Griffin, a marine biologist with the environmental group Oceana. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened” to “endangered”—meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help.‎ Which raises the obvious question: what else do these turtles want from us, anyway? It turns out, according to Griffin, that while we have done a good job of protecting the turtles for the weeks they spend on land (as egg-laying females, as eggs and as hatchlings), we have neglected the years spend in the ocean. “The threat is from commercial fishing,” says Griffin. Trawlers (which drag large nets through the water and along the ocean floor) and longline fishers (which can deploy thousands of hooks on lines that can stretch for miles) take a heavy toll on turtles. ‎ Of course, like every other environmental issue today, this is playing out against the background of global warming and human interference with natural ecosystems. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm. Ultimately we must get a handle on those issues as well, or a creature that outlived the dinosaurs (恐龙) will meet its end at the hands of humans, leaving our descendants to wonder how creature so ugly could have won so much affection.‎ ‎24. We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.‎ A.human activities have changed the way turtles survive B.efforts have been made to protect turtles from dying out C.government bureaucracy has contributed to turtles’ extinction D.marine biologists are looking for the secret of turtles’ reproduction ‎25.What does the author mean by “Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness” (Line 1, Para. 2)?‎ A.Nature is quite fair regarding the survival of turtles.‎ B.Turtles are by nature indifferent to human activities.‎ C.The course of nature will not be changed by human interference.‎ D.The turtle population has decreased in spite of human protection.‎ ‎26.What constitutes a major threat to the survival of turtles according to Elizabeth Griffin?‎ A.Their inadequate food supply.B.Unregulated commercial fishing.‎ C.Their lower reproductively ability. D.Contamination(pollution) of sea water ‎27. How does global warming affect the survival of turtles?‎ A.It threatens the sandy beaches on which they lay eggs.‎ B.The changing climate makes it difficult for their eggs to hatch.‎ C.The rising sea levels make it harder for their hatchlings to grow.‎ D.It takes them longer to adapt to the high beach temperature.‎ One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. You have to be with them in both good and bad times. In return, they will be there for you. But how can you be a good friend?‎ ‎ Listen. Listen when they are talking. Keep eye contact. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes you're not required to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.‎ ‎ Help them. If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't become their slave (奴隶). Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes as they may forget to take one. Have a few extra dollars in your pocket in case they forget something they need.‎ ‎ Be there for them. Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and baking things are among the nicest things you can do for a friend when they are in hard times. Marilyn Monroe once said, "I'm selfish, impatient (急躁的) and a little insecure. I make mistakes, and I am out of control and at times hard to deal with. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you surely don't deserve (值得) me at my best. "Always remember this! If you don't want to deal with your friends when they're depressed, then you don't deserve to be with them during those parties where you have a good time!‎ ‎ Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for an ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Make time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. These are the things you'll remember once you're all long graduated when looking back on your life!‎ ‎28.We can learn from the passage that _____.‎ A. we must be careful when we choose our friends B. friends should share happiness as well as problems C. keeping long friendship is not easy D. everyone can be a good friend ‎29.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.‎ Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930’s------ songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”----- and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940’s she developed her own “scat singing” ---- a breathless, nonsense---syllable style---- for songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”‎ Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, it’s a story. There’s only one thing better than singing…. It’s more singing.”‎ ‎32. What does the passage mainly discuss?‎ A. A comparison of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.‎ B. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common. In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Of the people that responded to the survey, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed with insomnia(失眠) and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline(边界线) insomnia. In addition, 30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day. ‎ Overall, the survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey’s findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase. ‎ There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time ‎ each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping. ‎ Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. She is an ordinary but great woman.‎ What impresses me most is her strong will. Disabled as she was, she never gave in to the misfortune. On the contrary, she was more optimistic than before. As we know, it is difficult for the disabled to learn. But Helen Keller was different from others, she was eager for knowledge. Nothing could change her determined mind. Her determination made her overcome various difficulties. That’s why I respect her so much.‎ Whenever I think of “If I had the power of sight for three days, ...”, I can’t help being touched by Helen. From her, I learn that we should value what we have and hold a firm belief in life however hard it is. ‎
