I looked up to Helen because she was doing what she loved—serving people—and nobody did it better. She made everyone smile and feel good, customers and coworkers alike.‎ ‎ Being a waitress changed my life. One of my regular customers was Fred Hasbrook,an electronics salesman. He always ate an omelet(煎蛋卷),and when I saw him walking toward the diner,I tried to have it on his table as soon as he sat down.‎ Thanks to the newfound confidence I picked up from Helen,I dreamed of having my own restaurant. But when I called my parents to ask for a loan, they said,“We just don't have the money.”‎ The next day,Fred saw me and asked,“What's wrong, sunshine? You're not smiling today.” I shared my dream with him and said,“Fred,I know I can do more if somebody would just have faith in me.”‎ ‎ He walked over to some of the other diner regulars and the next day handed me checks totaling $50,000along with a note that I have to this day. It reads,“The only collateral(抵押物)on this loan is my trust in your honesty as a person. Good people with a dream should have the opportunity to make that dream come true.”‎ ‎ I took the checks to Merrill Lynch the first time I had ever entered a brokerage house(经纪行)—where the money was invested for me. I continued working at the Buttercup, making plans for the restaurant I would open. My investments soured, though, and I lost the money.‎ I found myself thinking about what it would be like to be a stockbroker(股票经纪人).After great careful consideration,I decided to apply for a job at Merrill Lynch. Even though I had no experience,I was hired and ended up becoming a pretty good broker. Eventually I paid back Fred and my customers the $50,000,plus 14 percent annual interest. Five years later,I was able to open my own firm.‎ ‎21.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?‎ A.Helen should have a restaurant of her own.‎ B.Helen was really a very good waitress.‎ C.The writer had to learn from Helen.‎ D.The writer respected Helen.‎ ‎22.What is the meaning of the underlined word “soured” in the seventh paragraph?A.Doubled. Brothers and sisters borrow stuff, and don’t always return it in good shape. Younger kids sometimes feel the older kids get to do whatever they want. Older brothers and sisters think that the baby of the family gets more attention. These are typical problems found throughout the ages, everywhere in ‎ the world.‎ When brothers and sisters don’t get along well, it’s called sibling rivalry. A sibling is a brother or sister and rivalry means competition. It’s normal, but too much competition can make for an unhappy home life. ‎ A little competition isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes it can keep you working hard — when you and your brother spend time shooting hoops. If he’s good at it, it may make you want to improve, too. But some sibling rivalry involves arguments — when you think your brother is hogging(独占) the ball. People who love each other might argue sometimes, but too much fighting is unpleasant for everyone.‎ Have you ever heard of the green-eyed monster called jealousy(嫉妒)? Sometimes brothers and sisters are jealous of one another. For instance, if your sister always does well at school, it may be frustrating for you, especially if your grades are lower. Although you’re probably proud of your brothers and sisters, it’s normal to be a little jealous, too. It may make you feel better to focus more on doing your own personal things, rather than comparing yourself with a brother or sister.‎ All kids want attention from their parents, but sometimes you need to take turns. If you’re feeling ignored or your brother or sister is always in the spotlight, talk to your mom or dad. If a parent knows you’re feeling left out, he or she can think out ways to help you feel better again.‎ ‎24. The first paragraph mainly ____.‎ A. tells us whether it is right to let children do whatever they want B. tells us how we can get more attention from parents C. shows us the way to make rooms clean and tidy D. shows us problems found in a family with more than one child ‎25 When sibling rivalry happens, it proves a fact that ____. ‎ A. brothers and sisters will have to get away from their home B. no competition will be made by brothers and sisters C. brothers and sisters don’t get along well with each other D. no one can stop brothers and sisters arguing all day long ‎26. What does the author think of a little competition between brothers and sisters?‎ A. It makes the family life unhappy. ‎ B. It can help children improve their work.‎ C. It can lead to arguments and fighting.‎ D. It does harm to each of them.‎ ‎27. If a kid feels ignored in the family, the author suggests that he should ____.‎ A. talk to his parents B. work even harder C. fight with his brothers or sisters ‎ D. pay attention to his behavior ‎ ‎ C ‎ Our children feel stressed out by an educational system that actually uses stress as an educational technique. It's a constant pressure of homework deadlines, essays and exams. And our children are told at a young age that failing a test means that they are failures in life. They'll end up nowhere if they don't pass this or that exam. Our educational system is based on a very Western idea that life is a struggle and you'd better measure up. It's survival of the fittest. While there is some truth to this, not as much as people think.‎ Our ancestors didn't develop a constant stress environment. Back then, stress came quickly ‎ and was over quickly, it wasn't like the stress of modern education. Stress was originally just a shortterm biological response to danger; however, the constant stress of modern education rarely stops. It's long term, at least ten years and usually more.‎ Recent research has shown that the neurological(神经系统的)response to stress is the same response that is found in depression. So, what's the solution? A number have been proposed, including but not limited to the following.‎ ‎ Make sure that kids get exercise. Exercise consumes(消耗) energy that would otherwise build up in the stress response and could cause physical and mental problems.‎ Teach relaxation exercises. Allowing the mind and body to relax cuts off the stress response and reduces the neurological fatigue(疲劳),enabling the individual to recover at least somewhat.‎ Pay attention to thinking. Training the stressed student to pay attention to his or her own mind to a point where he or she is sufficiently aware to shut off the stress response when necessary.‎ Of course, there's a logical answer to the problem. Just rearrange our teaching methods to encourage, rather than prevent, the natural curiosity and joy in learning that we are all born with. This would remove the stress and probably cut learning time in half.‎ ‎28. What is the main idea of the passage? ‎ A. Dealing with stress in modern education. ‎ B. Helping children live a happy life.‎ C. Getting rid of the modern education. ‎ D. Taking measures to learn at school.‎ ‎29. Children feel stressed because ______.‎ A. they dislike the educational technique ‎ B. they have no ability to finish their homework C. they are convinced (相信)high grades are important ‎ D. they suffer numbers of failures in their life ‎30. How did our ancestors treat education?‎ A. They thought education was the only way to success.‎ B. They felt education could bring shortterm stress.‎ C. They believed education could bring the best out.‎ D. They knew the importance of good education.‎ ‎31. If you are a teacher in a high school ______.‎ A. you should relax yourself as far as possible ‎ B. you should ignore the stressed student C. you should leave students in a good mood ‎ D. you should stick to your teaching methods ‎ D Someday a stranger will read your email without your permission or scan the websites you've visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.‎ In fact, it's likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a policeman or a criminal. Whoever it is,they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century equal to being caught naked(裸露的).‎ Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, though it's important to reveal(透露) yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. Actually few boundaries remain. The ‎ digital bread crumbs (面包屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases,a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.‎ The key question is: Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.‎ When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a majority of people are pessimistic about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me”.‎ But people say one thing and do another. Only a small part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收费亭)to avoid using the EZPass system that can track(跟踪) automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquits has run a series of tests that reveal people will submit personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50centsoff coupon(优惠券).‎ But privacy does matter at least sometimes. It's like health:when you have it,you don't notice it. Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.‎ ‎32.From Paragraph 2,we can infer________.‎ A.criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology B.people tend to be more frank with each other in the information age C.in the 21st century people try every means to look into others' secrets D.people's personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge ‎33.What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?‎ A.There should be a distance even between friends.‎ B.There should be fewer quarrels between friends.‎ C.Friends should always be faithful to each other.‎ D.Friends should open their hearts to each other.‎ ‎34.What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?‎ A.They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.‎ B.They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.‎ C.They rely more and more on electronic equipment.‎ D.They use various loyalty cards for business deals.‎ ‎35.According to the passage, privacy is like health in that________.‎ A.its importance is rarely understood B.it is something that can easily be lost C.people will make every effort to keep it D.people don't treasure it until they lose it E ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 阅读短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or springclean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.‎ ‎ 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.‎ ‎1. Get Out of Bed Earlier If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That halfhour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been meaning to finish. 37 ‎ ‎2. Do the Important Tasks First Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all ‎ those little urgent ones.‎ ‎ 38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones.‎ ‎3. Reduce Interruptions If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.‎ When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail. 39 Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.‎ ‎4. 40 ‎ A few minutes' chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day.‎ When you're working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with. A. Stay Focused on Your Work B. Take Breaks When Necessary C. If you have an office door, close it.‎ D. If you work like this, you'll usually save time.‎ E. Would you want me to make your day longer?‎ F. I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long.‎ G. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ ‎  I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
