On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of sparkling stars. You can see even more with a telescope. You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail. But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That’s because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes. You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years. As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die. As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe. Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny marble. That’s how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It’s the same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything – even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness. So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than meets the eye! Scattered in the silent darkness are black holes – the great mystery of space. 21. According to the article, what causes a star to die? A. As it gets hotter and hotter, it explodes. B. It collides with other stars. C. It can only live for about a million years. D. As its gases run out, it cools down. 22. Which of the following statements is NOT a fact? A. Black holes are dead stars. B. There is nothing as mysterious as a black hole. C. Black holes are invisible. D. Black holes have gravity. 23.Which of the following is NOT a feature of a black dwarf? A. It is usually bigger than a white dwarf. B. It is dark. C. It is smaller in size than a common star. D. It is cold. B Robert is nine years old and Joanna is seven. They live at Mount Ebeneezer. Their father has a big property. They live 100, perhaps 300, miles away and like Robert and Joanna, they all go to school by radio. Mount Ebeneezer is in the center of Australia. Not many people live in “The Centre”. There are no schools with desks and blackboards and no teachers in “The Centre”. School is a room at home with a two-way radio. The teacher also has a two-way radio. C When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again. After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night. We found him just in time. This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path. Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he is still likely to turn around many times, but he is seldom lost. There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm may catch him without a compass in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light. When this happens, the normal first reaction is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties. The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm. 28. The writer suggested that if the man had not been found, ___________. A. he would have been shot by a gun B. he would have become confused C. he would have been attacked by wild animals D. he would have been in great danger 29. According to the text, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, ___________. A. he will worry about being laughed at B. he will push himself to find his way out C. he will feel sorry that he didn’t prepare well enough D. he will feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends 30. What is the most important when a person tries to find his way in the woods? A. Intelligence. B. Observation. C. Direction. D. Chance. 31. The writer tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who_________. A. go into the woods by themselves B. keep their head when they are in trouble C. are frightened when they think they are lost D. don’t know how to signal for help properly D The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. For thousands of years, he could sail on it. But he could not go far beneath its surface. Man wants to explore deep into the sea. However, he is not a fish. He must breathe air, so he can’t stay under the water’s surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems. A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. He can wear a diving suit and have air pumped to him from above. He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a hose(软管) and a mouthpiece. Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. His body is under great pressure. When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less. If the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles(气泡). The diver is then suffering from the bends(潜函病). The bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. They can even kill him. 32. On the whole, this text is about _________. A. special mixtures of gases in deep sea. B. the problems a diver faces in deep sea. C. air pressure under the surface of sea water. D. a kind of illness that man suffers in the sea. 33. The text does not say so, but it makes you think that ____________. A. deep-sea divers should be in good health. B. divers explore the deep sea only for treasure. C. there is a special mixture of gases under the sea. D. diving under the water too quickly causes a kind of illness. 34. Why does a diver get the bends? A. The air in his blood is used up. B. His diving suit weighs too much. C. He comes to the surface too quickly. D. He tries to do exercise under the sea. 35. From the text we can learn that _____________. A. man cannot stay under water for more than a few minutes. B. the sea began to interest man in the last few years. C. all divers will get the bends sooner or later. D. the bends may kill a diver. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Science of Risk-Seeking Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. __36__ Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work. The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-seekers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring, __37__ As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk. So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exist today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. __38__. No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. __39__ To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experience often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well. __20__ For the risk seekers, a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of brain related to fear becomes active. As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains or the waves of the shallow end of the pool. A. It all depends on your character. B. Those are the risks you should jump to take. C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival. D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest. E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into bigger world. F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards. G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题:每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 A man and his girlfriend were married. It 参考范文 Dear Sir/Madam, It is a common phenomenon that when entering high school, students’ study burden tend to become heavier and heavier. Quite a few students have moved out from their dormitories to live in a rented room near the school to make every minute count.I’m writing to express my opinion on it. It cannot be denied that they have their own time schedule after classes and easily concentrate on lessons alone in their small room. What’s important, with their moms taking care of them, they can spare more time for studies. However, there exist some disadvantages. For example, sometimes their minds go wandering easily without competitors round.Furthermore,a student who is left alone to study at rather an easy atmosphere tends to get distracted or even feel tired easily. From my perspective.I prefer to live in the rented room.In spite of the fact that the dorm life is full of fun and friendship, noisy songs and shouts in the dorms after evening classes only quiet down long after the blackout at 10:30 pm,leading to a serious lack of sleep.Worse still, they don’t make fullest use of time to study. Yours Sincerely, Li Hua查看更多
