B They shape our lives in many ways. Often when they get old, torn or fall apart, we’re likely to throw them out or replace them. But one 85-year-old man is devoted to bringing old books back to life. “I know how to do this. I enjoy doing this,” said Paul Reeder, a book repair hobbyist. Reeder is changing the face of our textbooks, one book at a time, said Skyview High School Principal, Deb Black. It all started just three weeks ago. “There was an article that came out about the bad shape our books were in,” said Black. Reeder read the article in the newspaper, and he soon appeared in Black’s office. It was the morning of April 5, 2016. “He said, ‘I’m here to offer what I think may be a solution,’” Black recalled (回忆). Reeder has been repairing books since the 1940s. Over the years, he’s worn many hats, yet his interest in book repair remained unchanged. In the year 1992 when Reeder retired (退休), he went all in. He has repaired books for a number of organizations including the Montana Historical Society and the Billings Public Library. Skyview’s students are not only thankful for Reeder’s help, but inspired (鼓舞) by his work. “They have made him thank-you signs and cards. I have one girl who left me a note the other day. She wants to learn to do what Paul does. What he does is a lost art. He has done great things for our kids and for our books,” said Black. The worn-out books are brought to Reeder on Friday, and in most cases, he’s able to return the books as good as new by the following Monday, according to Black. 24. What does Reeder think of his work? A. It is a pleasure. B. It is very boring. C. It is a lost art. D. It is really difficult. 25. How did Reeder find out Skyview’s books needed repairing? A. From Deb Black. B. From some students. C. From a newspaper. D. From an organization. 26. What can we infer about Reeder? A. He likes collecting old books. B. He repairs hats in his spare time. C. He has a lifelong love for book repair. D. He retired from Skyview High School. 27. What was the purpose of the schoolgirl’s note? A. To express thanks to Black. B. To have her books repaired. C. To make friends with Reeder. D. To learn Reeder’s repair skills. C When newspapers and radio describe the damage caused by a hurricane (海啸)named Hazel, girls named Hazel are probably teased by their friends. To keep out of trouble, the Weather Bureau says, “Any resemblance between hurricane names and the names of particular girls is purely accidental.” Some women became angry because hurricanes are given their names, but many other women are proud to see their names make headlines. They don’t even care that they are the names of destructive storms. Because more women seem to like it than dislike it, the Weather Bureau has decided to continue using girl’s names for hurricanes. In some ways a hurricane is like a person. After it is born, it grows and develops, then becomes old and dies. Each hurricane has a character of its own. Each follows its own path through the world, and people remember it long after it is gone. So it is natural to give hurricanes’ names, and to talk about them almost if they were alive. 28. What happens to girls named Hazel according to the passage? A. They suffer from hurricanes. B. The Weather Bureau look for them. C. Others often make fun of them. D. They can’t find boyfriend. 29. The underlined word “resemblance” probably means ______. A. trouble B. difference C. sameness D. success 30. According to the passage, which is more reasonable? A. Some women feel unhappy because hurricanes are given their names. B.A lot of women complain of the Weather Bureau. C. Many women want to be known. D. All the hurricanes are caused by women. 31. Public opinions make the Weather Bureau ____ A. consider the disagreement of some women B. go on naming hurricanes after women C. name hurricanes after men D. look for a new method to name hurricanes 32. It is natural to give hurricane names because ______. A. they become old and die B. all of them should be remembered C. each hurricane has its own day to come D. each hurricane has its own character D Some years ago, a 28yearold Californian wife and mother of three children died from drinking too much water. Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a waterdrinking contest that was held by a local radio show. Called “Hold Your Wee For A Wii”, the contest organizers promised a free Wii video game machine to those who drank the most water without going to the bathroom. The woman who died drank about 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other participants complained of discomfort and showed signs of pains, they were laughed at by the organizers. This tragic news story shows the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health. Consuming more water than you need can increase your total blood volume (容量). And since your blood volume exists within a closed system, increasing your blood volume puts unnecessary stress on your heart and blood vessels (血管). Your kidneys (肾) must work overtime to get rid of extra water out of your system. Your kidneys are not a pair of pipes. Flushing(冲洗)more water through your kidneys doesn’t necessarily help it become cleaner. Rather, your kidneys can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time. And drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of kidney damage. Putting unnecessary stress on your system and your kidneys by consuming unnecessary water is an unnoticeable process. For the average person, it is usually impossible to know that this stress exists, as there are usually no obvious symptoms on a momenttomoment basis. But make no mistake about it: this stress is real and can hurt your health over the long term. 33.Why is the Californian woman mentioned? A.To lead to the topic of the text. B. To tell us a tragic news story about a mother. C.To tell us it can be dangerous to take part in contests. D.To tell us how much water we can drink at most one time. 34.When the participants showed signs of pains, the organizers ________. A.became very concerned B.were laughed at by others C.tried to reduce their pains D.didn’t pay much attention to them 35.The stress caused by consuming unnecessary water ________. A.isn’t that dangerous B.can never be found out C.is really harmful in the long run D.leads to some obvious symptoms 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Weight loss is a hard topic.
