An advertisement B Kenneth Hansen, 46, was working with his brother late one May evening two years ago, putting the last pieces of siding on a house in Gratiot County, Michigan. He looked up to see his brother shouting at him and waving his arms anxiously. Then he heard screaming. Standing next door was a little boy yelling while four dogs barked at him. At first, Hansen thought it was just a dogfight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. “The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they’re killing something,” he says. Then the young boy suddenly appeared in the middle of the dogs wearing what looked like a red-and-white shirt. “That was when my hunch was proved right,” says Hansen. “He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him.” Hansen raced across the grass, jumped over a six-foot-high fence, and landed in the neighbor’s yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him so he yelled louder until they left just long enough for Hansen to save eight-year-old Ethan Nokes. Hansen ran to a back deck (木制平台). So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn’t open. “A dog bit Ethan’s foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me,” he says. Hansen tried a second door, rushed inside and then shut Ethan in. He turned and faced the dogs surrounding him, barking. “I knew I had to get the dogs outside,” he says. Hansen screamed and yelled until he got them out onto the plat and shut the door. The dogs sat outside, glaring at him. With the house quiet, he went to check on Ethan in the bedroom. The boy was covered in blood, still crying. Doctors arrived soon after, and Ethan was rushed to a Grand Rapids hospital, where he was operated on for more than 30 bite wounds. It’s still unclear what sent the dogs into kill mode. 25. Why did Hansen’s brother wave his arms? A. To greet a little boy. B. To ask Hansen for help. C. To make Hansen leave. D. To scare some dogs away. 26. What does the underlined word “hunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The boy was shirtless and injured. B. The boy wore a red-and-white shirt. C. The dogs were playing with the boy. D. The dogs were trying to kill the boy. 27. What did Hansen do to save Ethan? A. He rushed Ethan to hospital. B. He took Ethan to a safe room. C. He sent Ethan back to his parents. D. He led the dogs to a faraway place. C You probably know that some fish eat other fish, but did you know there is one fish that has its own fishing pole? The anglerfish (琵琶鱼), found in deep parts of the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, has a long fin (鳍) that looks like a worm. Using this special fin, the anglerfish “fishes”. This is why it is called the “anglerfish”. An anglerfish sits on the seafloor, blending (使混合) into its surroundings. The only part of its body that other fish notice is the fin. The anglerfish hangs the fin in front of its open mouth. When another fish sees the fin, it thinks it is a worm. The smaller fish swims closer and the anglerfish swallows it. Although they sound frightening, most anglerfish are small. The color of the anglerfish can be brown, dark gray or black. An anglerfish has soft flesh and bones, and small eyes. Because of its round body it cannot swim very fast or straight. Instead, it sort of moves from side to side through the water. The male anglerfish is smaller than the female and looks completely different. The male is the size of a small finger and is black in color. When he matures, his digestive system weakens, making it impossible for him to feed on his own. He must find a female or starve. With his hooked teeth, he attaches himself to the female. He bites into her, letting something out to break down the skin of his mouth and some skin on her body. The two fish blend together and become one. Even their blood vessels (脉管) join, becoming one system. The male spends the rest of his life living like a parasite (寄生虫), getting his nourishment from the female’s body. A female anglerfish can carry six males on her body at once. A single female anglerfish is responsible for feeding herself and all the male anglerfish she carries. 28. The anglerfish is so named_______. A. for its special feeding habit B. because it looks like a worm C. for its method of catching fish D. because it lives in the deep sea 29. Which of the following prevents the anglerfish moving fast? A. It is big in size. B. It is short-sighted. C. It has hard bones. D. It has a round body. 30. What do we know about anglerfish according to the last two paragraphs? A. A mature male can carry several females at once. B. The female is smaller compared with the male. C. The mature male cannot live without a female. D. The female has no fishing pole unlike the male. 31. What would be the best title for the text? A. The living conditions of the anglerfish B. New species of the anglerfish found C. The anglerfish’s survival skills D. The life cycle of the anglerfish D Selfies (自拍照) are frequently seen on social media. Google statistics have shown that about 93 million selfies were taken per day in 2014, counting only those taken on Android smart phones. Selfie equipment such as selfie sticks is now common, so are selfie cameras on phones. And the word “selfie” was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. While selfies are extremely common, opinions on selfies can vary naturally, with some seeing them as a creative way of expressing feelings and connecting with other people and others seeing them as narcissistic (自恋的). As a common cultural phenomenon, selfies are of interest to psychologists, in terms of how people think and feel when taking, posting and viewing both their own selfies and others’. In a recent study, Sarah Diefenbach, a professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, did an online survey to assess people’s motives (动机) and judgments when taking and viewing selfies. A total of 238 people living in Austria, Germany and Switzerland completed the survey. The researchers found that 77% of the participants regularly took selfies. Interestingly, 62-67% agreed on the potential negative effects of selfies. This was also explained by 82% of participants indicating they’d rather see other types of photos instead of selfies on social media. This phenomenon has been called the “selfie paradox (悖论)” by Diefenbach. The key to the paradox may lie in the way the participants view their own selfies, compared with those of others. The participants think the selfies taken by others have greater self-presentational motives and less authenticity (真实性), while those taken by themselves are more authentic. “This may explain how everybody can take selfies without feeling narcissistic. If most people think like this, then it’s no wonder that the world is full of selfies,” Diefenbach explains. 32. What is the first paragraph mainly intended to show? A. The objections to selfies. B. The popularity of selfies. C. The value of selfie tools. D. The different views on selfies. 33. What attracts psychologists according to Paragraph 3? A. How people take selfies. B. Where people take selfies. C. What people think of selfies. D. How selfies show one’s feelings. 34. What can we learn about selfies from Sarah Diefenbach’s study? A. Almost everyone likes taking selfies every now and then. B. Most people enjoy taking selfies but not viewing selfies on social media. C. Some people dislike showing their selfies on social media. D. Few people prefer showing their own selfies to other people. 35. What does Diefenbach try to explain in the last paragraph? A. Why people like taking selfies. B. What the disadvantage of selfies is. C. Why people view selfies as authentic. D. How selfies influence one’s feelings. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 5 ways to get vegetables into your diet If you have picky eaters at home, or you’re just stuck for ideas to put more vegetables on the plate, try these five ways to get creative and give your diet a healthy kick-start. 1. ___36____ One reason we don’t get enough of them is that many of us consider vegetables merely as a side dish to dinner.
