Bob started to stand up and pushed the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. “How embarrassing! I am getting so clumsy in my old age.” Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Frank began,“My Dad was a fisherman. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home.” Frank's voice dropped a bit. “When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!” He paused and then went on, “I remember the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got to the school, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, ‘No, Dad.’ It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised look on his face. I said, ‘Dad, I'm too old for a good-bye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.’ My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear. I had never seen him cry. He turned. ‘You're right,’ he said. ‘You are a big boy ... a man. I won't kiss you anymore.’” For the moment, the tears began to well up in Frank's eyes. “It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back.” I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again.“Guys, you don't know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek.” 4.Why did Frank feel embarrassed when his father kissed him good-bye at that time? C Chinese consumers'(消费者)crazy appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one--third of the world's luxury items. As China's economy develops quickly, the market opportunities for all sorts of luxury goods and services are increasing. Luxury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. But more importantly, China's luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items. China's high-quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with 1.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past five years, China's red wine consumption has grown 136 percent. According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to “gain face” and publicly display social climbing through material possessions. On the other hand, it is “self-reward” that lies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chinese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear to be in particular need of rewarding themselves for their success. But this has little to do with “gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal satisfaction. Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally. 7. What do you think the author would most probably be? A. A news reporter. B. A salesman. C. A professor. D. A conductor. 8. The underlined word “outstripping” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A. falling far behind of B. going out of C. going far ahead of D.keeping pace with 9 . What can be the best title for the passage? A. Future Private Luxury Consumption in China B. Chinese Appetite for Luxury Goods and Services C. The Potential Luxury Jet Market in China D. The Maturity of the Chinese Consumers D Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact, it is an old-wives’ tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true. As one ages, the hairs on the head also age. In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear (磨损) after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled. Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens. When new hairs are replacing the old ones, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However, as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty. Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body. It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss. It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this. On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension. Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations. 10. The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably means________. A. clever remarks B. silly remarks C.exciting remarks D. disappointed remarks 11.The second paragraph mainly tells us __________. A. every part of body is replaced with age B. hairs will grow weak but not die C. skin becomes wrinkled with age D. every part of body ages with age 12. What might play the most important role in the graying process? A. Genetics and the amount of sleeping time. B. The amount of food people eat and living environment. C. The amount of pigment and genetics. D. Genetics and the amount of water people drink E The Taj Mahal , in Agra, India, is one of the most brilliant structures on Earth. It is nearly 400 years old. Emperor Shah Jahan had it built in memory of his wife. It took about 20 years to build the monument. Some 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants helped the job done. Today, the Taj Mahal is not just a symbol of cultural history. It’s also India’s most famous tourist attraction. About 8 million people visit it each year. But pollution is turning the white marble monument shades of green, yellow, and brown. The Taj Mahal stands on the polluted Yamuna River. Insects are attracted to the dirty water. They leave greenish droppings on the building. Air pollution is also a big threat. Factories and cars release pollution into the air. It sticks to the Taj Mahal’s surface. In the 1990s, India’s Supreme Court ordered hundreds of factories near the monument to close. Also, car and bus traffic was restricted. From time to time, workers clean the Taj Mahal. But doing so is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming. And it doesn’t prevent the discoration. On July 11, India’s Supreme Court gave the city of Agra a warning. “Either you destroy the Taj Mahal or you restore it”. Authorities in the city submitted a draft of an action plan on July 24. It suggests banning plastics and construction from the area. It also calls for the closing of more factories. “In order to preserve The Taj Mahal, people must come together to work toward a solution. There needs to be positive pressure on people to act. We need to act immediately,” Sachchida Tripathi says. He worked on a 2014 study of pollution at the Taj Mahal. “We are trying,” he adds, “but we need to try more.” 13. Why did Emperor Shah Jahan build The Taj Mahal? A.To attract tourists B.To honour his wife. C.To represent India. D.To mark his greatness 14. What can we infer about the Taj Mahal from the second paragraph? A. It is getting dirty. B. It is under repair C. It attracts insects. D. It is losing tourists. 15. What should people do to save the Taj Mahal accorging to Sachchida Tripathi ? A. Close factories. B .Become united. C.
