The common idea that most kids have of a scientist is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and several glass cups of mysterious colorful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority view scientists as strange people who spend 100 hours a week slaving away in a lonely laboratory. However, the reality is quite different. Recently I’ve had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my laboratory in Costa Rica. It supports a huge amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% of the total species worldwide! First we worked alongside conservationists to preserve wildlife at a leatherback turtle(棱皮龟) rescue center. We helped the volunteers preserve turtle populations by removing rubbish from the shoreline to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic activity relating to earth-quakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. After reaching the top, we went down and through waterfalls to the beautiful valley below. On the last day we got a hands-on introduction to Rocket Science where we learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station. During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn’t mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist may be one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping preserve wildlife, learning about earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that schools should really stress that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring! 2l. According to the first paragraph, scientists are often believed _______. A. to work as slaves B. to behave in a strange way C. to spend too much time in labs D. to do experiments in messy labs 22. The author helped to preserve the turtle population by _______. A. creating a safe nest for turtles B. picking up rubbish on the shoreline C. collecting the turtle eggs on the beach D. finding a comfortable environment for turtles 23. What does the author learn about science from his experience? A. Science is full of boring experiments. B. Science is more than working in a lab. C. Science is related to mysterious liquids. D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes. B The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms(节气). Start of Winter, the 19th solar tern of the year, began on Nov. 7 and ended on Nov. 21 in 2016. It is the first solar tern of winter, which means winter is coming and crops harvested in autumn should be stored up. Beginning of winter or not In ancient times, the Chinese people considered Start of Winter as the beginning of the winter. However in fact, Start of Winter is not the beginning of winter in terms of meteorology(气象学). The climate every year is different, so the beginning of winter could be quite different. And with the vast land of China, winter of every area doesn’t begin at the same time. Welcoming tine winter in ancient times The four beginnings of the seasons were important festivals in ancient times. Before Start of Winter, the ancient emperor would take a shower and have no more meat. On that day, the emperor would lead his officials to perform the ceremony of “welcoming the winter”. Eating dumplings “Medical Saint” Zhang Zhongjing saved many people in Henan province and the patients’ ears from being frostbitten(冻伤) around Start of Winter. He cooked mutton, hot peppers and herbs to get rid of the cold and increase body heat. He put these ingredients into a dough(面团) skin and made them into an ear shape. The first dumplings were used to ________. A. offer to ancestors B. celebrate the coming of winter C. create an interesting tradition D. save people from cold injuries C Santa Claus wasn’t always the cheerful white-bearded bearer of gifts that we know so well today. In fact, Santa’s historical roots in America can go back to the 18th-century arrival of Dutch immigrants, who would gather on December 6 to honor the anniversary of Saint Nicholas’ death. Believed to have been born in modem-day Turkey around 280 A.D., Saint Nicholas gave most of his life to philanthropy(慈善事业), for which he was quickly considered as a popular legend in European history. His Dutch nickname, Sinterklaas eventually became “Santa Claus.” One of the first American Santas was the fat and happy fella(伙计) from Clement Clark Moore’s 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Later in the 1860s, political cartoonist Thomas Nast popularized Santa in his illustrations(插画) for Harper’s Weekly. As early as the mid-19th century, American companies saw the need to have a Father Christmas-style character for seasonal marketing. It was this image that was most famously invented by the Coca-Cola Company from the early 1930s on, in the company colors of red and white, as part of its campaign to increase winter sales of its soft drink. A search of the collections across a number of Smithsonian museums shows a Santa for every generation. You can see the image of Santa on the photographs, posters, postcards, greeting cards, song sheets, and even telegrams. “Although there is not a specific collection owned by Santa, if you search through the collections you can see how Santa has been represented over time in various ways,” says Wendy Shay, acting chair of the Archives Center. “For example, in some of the earlier Victorian descriptions of Santa, he doesn’t look particularly attractive or happy.” Santa Claus was, and is, a man of his times. 28. We can infer from the passage that _______. A. Saint Nicholas is only a legend B. the image of Santa Claus was firstly born in Turkey C. Saint Nicholas is the nickname of Santa Claus D. Saint Nicholas was a warm-hearted and kind man 29. It can be inferred that the first American Santas have appeared _________. A. for less than two centuries B. for more than two centuries C. for more than a century D. for less than a century 30. Why did Coca-Cola Company actively use Santa’s image? A. Because it needed a father character. B. Because it needed a famous brand. C. Because it wanted to increase summer sales. D. Because it wanted to increase winter sales. 31. Wendy Shay gives an example of the earlier Victorian descriptions of Santa to_____. A. show a specific collection in Smithsonian museums B. show he was, and is, a man of his times C. show he looks either attractive or cheerful D. show he looks neither attractive nor enjoyable D It was something she had dreamed of since she was five.
