These are the next generation of helicopter parents, who take over-parenting to the next level. Rather than staying overhead in the air, these parents actively prepare the way for their children to succeed, cushioning every bump along the way. Their goal is to create a soft, even surface onto which their child will proceed, free from harm and worry. They get involved before problems reach their child, sometimes even going to immoral lengths, such as writing college papers for a child who’s running out of time. One teacher told the Irish Times: “These days you would often hear from a mother or father insisting their child be put in the top math class, for example. Self-esteem (respect) is the buzzword (popular word). They feel it would harm their child’s confidence. The irony is their self-esteem would be damaged far more by sending them into a class where they can’t catch up with others. It’s not children who are out of control. It’s parents. There will come a point when these children won’t have parents on which to depend, and then how are they going to function? It’s frightening, too, to imagine these children becoming adults and attempting to raise families of their own. They would hardly be capable of teaching independence, confidence, work ethic, and discipline to their own children if they’ve never learned it themselves. At the end of the TIME article, Gibbs shared a wonderful quote from writer D.H. Lawrence, written in 1918: “How to begin to educate a child. First rule: leave him alone. Second rule: leave him alone. Third rule: leave him alone. That is the whole beginning. 21.Which of the following would the author agree with about “Lawnmower parents”? A. They are children of helicopter parents. B. They always stay over their children’s head in the air. C. They want to win over helicopter parents.[] D. They do much more for children than helicopter parents. 22.According to the teacher mentioned in the text, what does the underlined it in Para 3 refer to? A. That children belong to the ordinary class. B. That children are put in the top maths class. C. That children can’t catch up with the class. D. That children don’t do well as expected. 23.What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. Letting children be is the last thing to do in education. B. We must allow children enough freedom in their development. C. Gibbs must have been an expert in children education. D. There is no definite answer to how to educate a child. 24.What’s the author’s attitude toward the children with “Lawnmower parents”? A. Very appreciative. B. Quite surprised. C. Much worried. D. A little disappointed.[] Human brains begin growing and developing at a very young age. They learn from the simplest experiences ,which enable your children to be aware of the world. There’s no denying that outdoor play helps a lot! Times when children have to wait for their turns on playground equipment and following the playground rules by sharing, all these form components of healthy social-emotional development. Young children develop their social-emotional skills through practice and small steps over time. As parents or caregivers, it is fairly simple to support your child’s social-emotional skills. Acts like holding him, touching him, and speaking to him and giving him loving care and attention are all helping factors. When you allow them freedom to play, it is important to follow their interests in helping build their social-emotional skills. Difficulties in social-emotional skills can often lead to children having trouble when playing with other children. Becoming easily angry or not empathizing(理解)with other children are all signs that may point in this direction. This can in turn lead to them not empathizing with the needs of other children. As for the development of cognitive( 认 知 的 )skills, these develop through practice and opportunity over time. And while some cognitive skills may be genetic, most are learned through real life situations. In other words, learning and thinking skills can be improved through experiences. To enable them to learn, it is important that we are mindful of what our children are interested in. And this realization is only set in place once the child is given enough and time to grow and explore. Depriving children of such experiences can mean that they might struggle with higher-level thinking skills. And while it is normal to keep them safe, we forget that by rushing them and cutting down on play time, we’re actually causing more harm than good. 25.What can playing with other children greatly help children do? A. Learn from other children B. Develop their social emotion C. Promote their personal hobbies D. Help them to control their emotion 26.What usually brings trouble to a child while playing with other children? A. Not understanding others B. Caring too much about others C. Lacking social emotional skills D. Being more selfish than selfless 27.What does the underlined word “depriving” in the last paragraph mean? A. Taking away B. Providing for C. Referring to D. Focusing on 28.What is the main purpose of the text? A. To call on us to promotes children’s interest B. To show us the importance of social emotions C. To tell us how to improve children’s social emotions D. Now, it’s my turn to tell you about the Chinese school system. High school in China is divided into two periods, the first of which is called “junior high” and the second (of which is called) “senior high”. Chinese students only enjoy free education of nine years. As a result, we have much more difficulty in going to senior high school. In China, we have to learn both academic subjects and other subjects such as information technology. To be admitted into a good university, we must work hard and make progress all the time. After class, there are different kinds of activities to take part in, where we have developed our abilities. At school, we should behave ourselves. If not, it’s impossible for us to avoid being punished. That’s all I could think of about the Chinese school system. Don’t hesitate to ask me if you still have any questions. I’m looking forward to your reply! Yours, Rob Marshall
