Welcome to your future life. Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics(智能电子元件)are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you’re 40. You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged! As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies. “Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space—and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advances, vaccination shots(防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door. It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office, Autopilot.” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it. 21. What changes the color of your shirt? A. The mirror. B. The shirt itself. C. The counter. D. The medicine. 22. How do the shoes know that you shouldn’t eat the breakfast cereal? A. The bagless vacuum cleaner James Dyson, 1979 There are some things we don’t know we need until someone invents them. Step forward, the bag-less vacuum cleaner. James Dyson came up with the idea after spending a lot of money on an expensive cleaner that simply pushed dirt around. Most of us would have left it that, but Dyson went on to change the basic principle of a vacuum cleaner—an idea that hadn’t been changed for 100 years—by designing a system that removed the necessity of the bag for good. His final version took five years of research. However, when Dyson first approached manufactures with his idea, he couldn’t interest them. But he didn’t give up and set up a factory in Wiltshire in 1993 to produce them himself. Two years later, Dyson’s products were outselling the competition. The Mini Alec Issigonis, 1959 While the Americans were driving supersize Cadillacs, Britain famously went in the opposite direction and came up with a small car. Alec Issigonis was responsible for the design and made a name for himself in motoring history with its launch(投放市场) in 1959 for the British Motor Corporation (BMC). The Mini’s success wasn’t overnight. Many thought it “strange”, but it developed into a love affair with the British that’s never decreased, helped by the fact that many stars loved it. The London sewage system(污水处理系统) Joseph Bazalgette, 1865 Like any major city, London has always produced large amounts of waste. Give thanks, then, to Joseph Bazalgette, an engineer who developed a far-reaching underground sewage system. It changed the process of getting rid of waste by dumping it into the Thames River. Even more impressive was his idea to construct pipes that would function for nearly 150 years and still be large enough to meet the need of the increasing population. As he said, “We’re only going to do this once. 28. What do we know about James Dyson and his idea? A. His efforts paid off at last. B. He enjoyed immediate success. C. C. with the help of some famous people. D. because people lost interest in supersize cars. 30. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph shows Bazalgette was______. A. cautious B. confident C. far-sighted D. strong-minded 31. What did the three British inventors have in common? A. Their success came after many failures. B. They influenced many other inventors. C. They made their inventions by accident. D. Their inventions changed people’s lives. D President Xi Jinping urged the leaders of the world’s biggest economies to deliver “real action” and “no empty talk” as they attempt to help the global economy out of its slow state. In his opening speech at the start of the two-day G20 Summit on Sunday, he said the G20 had drawn up action plans in multiple fields, including sustainable development, green finance, energy efficiency and anti-corruption, “and we should carry out each of them seriously”. The Hangzhou summit has come at a time when the world economy is troubled by problems, short and long term, such as poor growth, changing population, rising trade protectionism and low investment, Xi said. But he insisted that G20 members will “face the problems directly” and cooperate in developing solutions. World leaders vowed at the meeting to find workable solutions to restore strong growth and achieve more-inclusive development that reduces inequality. They also agreed that more focus should be placed on structural reforms, innovation and high-technology, as traditional growth engines have weakened. German Prime Minister Merkel said leaders had agreed that they must work together to boost global economic growth, and she welcomed China’s focus on structural reform. She added that digital ministers from the world’s biggest economies will meet for the first time next year and that the group planned to set up a task force for innovation, Reuters reported. Xi said in his speech that while the world needs to better coordinate monetary and fiscal policies and carry out structural reforms, priority should be given to achieving balanced growth. He said the G20 will help less-developed countries, including those in Africa, with industrialization as well as green energy and finance to bridge the gaps in global development. The G20 has been criticized in the past for failing to take concrete measures to coordinate world economies. While urging members to take real action, Xi said the group “should continue to build our systems to ensure our cooperation continues and deepens”. “The G20 is becoming more systematic and is changing from a short-term arrangement to handle crises to a long-term dialogue and action mechanism,” according to Chen Wenling, chief economist at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges. “To make it more effective, the G20 should establish a secretariat.” Wang Wen, acting director of Renmin University of China’s Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, added. “The G20 used to be driven by crises, and now it’s driven by ideas. China has provided a global consensus at the Hangzhou summit that will drive global joint action.” 32. What’s the common goal of the leaders of the G20 in this Summit in Hangzhou? A. To listen to President Xi’s report. B. To help out the slow global economy. C. To develop green finance. D. To criticize the past wrong doings. 33. What restricted the development of the world economy according to President Xi? A. Energy efficiency. B. Anti-corruption. C. Sustainable development. D. Rising trade protectionism. 34. How did German Prime Minister Merkel think of China’s structural reform? A. It’s empty talk. B. It’s unequal. C. It’s welcomed. D. It’s out of date. 35. What’s the main idea of the news report about the G20 Summit? A. To elect the new leader for the next G20 Summit. B. To call for real joint action to develop the world economy. C. To come up with new ideas for China’s structural reform. D. To object to the trade protectionism strongly. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 People all have good days and bad days.
