What follows is a list of some of the most famous activists. Edith Dircksey Cowan (1861 — 1932) Edith Dircksey Cowan was an Australian social campaigner. It was her unhappy- childhood that urged her to work tirelessly for the welfare of women and children. What do the four activists mentioned have in common? A. They are organization founders. B. They work hard to improve women’s life. C. They are all victims of child labor. D. They all fight for children’s rights. B One day after a family dinner, my mom told my older son Scott about a problem with her cell phone. “Do you know how to fix that?” she said. Within seconds, Scott was kneeling by his grandmother’s chair with her phone in hand. I turned to talk with my dad, but he had followed my mom’s lead and asked my younger son about a cell phone problem. My son was leaning over my dad’s chair, holding the phone and guiding my dad. My husband and I looked at each other and then stopped talking. Our special family night had turned into a tech support session. I began to wonder when this had happened. When did my children learn things that my parents and I don’t know? The parents are supposed to be the teachers, right? But obviously, parents and children change roles over lime. Our children develop interests that we don’t share. When my sister and I talked about the craziness of parenting teenagers years ago. we developed a motto: “It’s their journey.” The motto reminded us that our children would probably travel different paths to maturity (成熟) than the paths we followed. No matter how much we hoped they could copy our experiences, we knew it probably wouldn’t happen. And it turned out that my children’s unique life experiences have helped them develop knowledge and insights they can share with others, including their mom. Why should I be surprised by this development? In some ways, I will always be my children’s teacher. By word and example, I will continue to teach my sons about living with passion and purpose no matter how old you are. But I hope my children will teach me a few things as well. I bought a new phone today, and I need some help. 25. Why did the author and her husband stop talking? A. They felt quite upset. B. They went on with dinner. C. They were lost in thought. D. They began to check their phones. 26. What does the author think about children’s growth? A. Children should follow their parents’ paths. B. Children will develop their own way of life. C. Parents should always learn what children know. D. Parents need to share same interests with children. 27. What can be the best title for the text? A. Who is in Teaching Now B. My Kids’ Amazing Growth C. A Special Family Dinner D. When I Bought a New Phone C Every winter, hundreds of humpback whales swim long distances from the Arctic and Antarctic to warmer waters to multiply. The newborn calves (幼崽) have only a few months to pack on the body fat needed to survive the long journey back to cooler waters in summer. How the babies signal hunger and avoid predators (捕食者) during these months has always been a mystery to scientists. “We know next to nothing about the early life stages of whales in the wild, but they are vital for the calves’ survival during the long journey,” says study lead author Simone Videsen. The study team tracked eight calves and two mothers in the Exmouth Gulf using special recorders that caught their movements and sounds. Their findings suggested that instead of yelling loudly, humpback calves signal their hunger by gently touching their mothers or making soft sounds. The mom s acknowledge the requests by responding with quiet calls. This is very different from the normally loud adult whale songs. The team believes these quiet conversations help whale mothers keep track of their young without being overheard by dangerous predators. The scientists believe that the barely heard conversations also keep mate-seeking males at bay, allowing the females to focus on caring for the newborns. The study stresses the importance of keeping the nursery waters from human noise pollution. The scientists point out that activities such as whale watching, shipping and fishing, could mask the quiet communication between the mother and calf, increasing the risk of deadly consequences for the baby humpbacks. Considering that the humpback whale is on the endangered list, it’s important to ensure that every one of these precious calves survives. 28. What’s the major challenge that newborn calves face? A. The inability to signal hunger. B. The limited time of gaining body fat. C. The difficulty of surviving summer. D. The unavoidable fight with predators. 29. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Predators. B. Mother whales. C. Early life stages. D. Cooler waters. 30. Why does the mother whale make quiet calls? A. To comfort the calves. B. To save physical strength. C. To avoid getting unwanted attention. D. To stay away from scientists’ recorders. 31. What’s the significance of the study? A. It reduces the risk to the calves. B. It ensures every whale’s security. C. It helps whales communicate better. D. It raises public awareness of ocean noise pollution. D Long before farm-to-table became a slogan of sustainability (可持续发展), it was being practiced here. Esalen Institute’s Farm and Garden, on the Big Sur cliffs, has been growing food sustainably for more than 40 years. The Farm and Garden works with the kitchen at Esalen to offer a daily changing, seasonal menu —there isn’t much choice. The kitchen prepares three meals a day for the institute and 13,000 visitors a year, using produce picked fresh daily by the Farm and Garden and from local growers. Esalen, along with Green Gulch Farm Zen Center and the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS), started practicing community-supported agriculture in the late 1960s and has upheld a simple and sustainable way of growing food that others, in the midst of the farm-to-table trend, see as a model. “Part of our task is to educate the people that come here about sustainable agriculture and the value of locally grown food,” says Esalen Farm and Garden manager Shirley Ward. When hiring staff, Ward says she seeks candidates with a background not only in organic farming but in teaching too. She hired garden supervisor (主管) Christopher La Rose a little over a year ago. Christopher, a New York native, has a background in social work in addition to farming experience and then teaching at UC Santa Cruz’s extension program. The Farm and Garden is a place where growing isn’t just for food but for people too. Through hands-on experiences, the Farm and Garden uses horticulture (园艺) as a therapy to reconnect nature and visitors. “It’s exciting to see adults who have been eating broccoli all their lives come to the garden to cut broccoli and say: ‘I’ve never touched a broccoli plant in my life!’” Ward says with a chuckle. 32. Why does the kitchen at Esalen offer limited choices on the menu? A. It only uses freshly picked produce. B. The Farm and Garden’s output is small. C. The everyday produce is uncertain. D. There are too many visitors. 33. Why did Ward hire Christopher? A. He is a New York native. B. He used to be a garden supervisor. C. He has a suitable educational background. D. He has farming and teaching experiences. 34. What do Ward’s words in the last paragraph show? A. Visitors’ eating habits are changed in the Farm and Garden. B. The Farm and Garden does help people connect with nature. C. Horticulture is becoming popular among modern people. D. Working in the Farm and Garden is a new way of life. 35. What can we learn about the Farm and Garden? A. It mainly serves local people. B. It started farming 60 years ago. C. It leads the farm-to-table trend. D. It calls on visitors to protect nature. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 When I think of meditation (冥想), my mind automatically pictures someone sitting by the beach, cross-legged and humming. “Boring,” I used to say, dismissing the ancient art and its promises of inner peace. _36_ Or perhaps I should say I don’t believe in my ability to find peace of mind by sitting quietly.
