A program called Kids Café is helping some of these children by providing free nutritious (有营养的) snacks and meals during after-school programs. At a community center in Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C., children make a snack as part of their afterschool program. “The snack is very healthy for your body, but the main thing is that it tastes really, really good,” Keith Clements tells them. He runs the Kids Café program. The children are between the ages of 5 and 11 and are from several local schools. About half have parents from Ethiopia. Many of the children eat their traditional food at home. Kids Café, with food offered free by a food bank, gives them an opportunity to try different types of food. “It’s good,” says one girl. But Rebecca Nance, whose parents are from the US, is not so sure. “The taste is weird.” Her mother, Daffany Nance has two children in the program. She’s glad her kids are getting nutritious food. “Even in my house we don’t have much junk food,” she says, “so it’s very important that it’s healthy and continues to help them grow better.” The charity(慈善机构), Feeding America, started the national Kids Café program in 1993. The charity says more than 16 million children in the United States do not have enough healthy food to eat. Kids Café became part of the afterschool program at this community center five years ago. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese soil, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before. And how marvelous must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road. Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the thrill of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view. Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are. We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. The British politician Benjamin Disraeli summed this up well when he said, “Travel teaches toleration.” 7. The author uses Marco Polo and Zhang Qian as examples to . A. explain how the Silk Road was founded B. present travel as an amazing experience C. show how the way people travel has changed D. describe important cultural exchanges in history 8. By saying “the best travel is when it’s for the first time’’, the author means that . A. one’s first trip is usually the most challenging B. no other trip is better than one’s first trip C. there is always much to learn on one’s first trip D. people usually make better preparations for their first trip 9. The underlined word recreation in paragraph 4 probably means . A. learning B. knowledge C. fun D. risk 10. According to the last two paragraphs, the author believes that . A. traveling should be included in formal education B. traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle C. a foreign journey may raise people’s cultural understanding D. there is more to learn from adventures than being in classrooms 第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多途选项。 (注:选E 涂AB ; 选F涂AC; 选G涂AD) Every year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, the summer, or a year. Neglecting his wife’s disagreement, Harry inserted the key into the lock and easily unlocked the locker. There was a small wooden box in it. Curious, Harry stared at it for a while, attempting to figure out what was in it and what was it for, but failed with no idea about it. Harry took out the box and was about to open it when his wife uttered with a tremble in her voice: "Please don’t. Stop being overreached. Lock it and we go to the police station, please.”Hesitating for a while, Harry decided to follow his wife. However, just at this moment, another voice emerged. "Please put the box down, sir, and turn around, give us the key to the number 164 locker please.” Harry turned quickly and two policemen were standing next to him. Harry soon realized something was wrong. The small box was still in his hands and the man standing beside the police seemed to be the owner. Overwhelmed with fear, Harry could feel his heart pounding wildly in his chest and blood racing through his veins. His wife was frozen to the spot with an unusual pale face. Harry was clear he must gave an explanation, so he went great lengths to open his mouth:"I’m sorry. We found it in the railway station and I just want to check it. We’re going to take the key to the police actually. I’m sorry.” The owner nodded his head and said:"I know. I heard your wife’s words. Anyhow, thank you.” Harry sighed with relief and thought: "We should have gone for the drink and never tried anything new.” 查看更多
