Now, let's take a look at some of the world's worst buildings. The Torre Velasca The Torre Velasca in Milan is in the centre of Milan(Italy). The tower, which went up in the 1950s, is about 100 metres tall. His life had a big change after his handler Will’s presence because Will found he did extremely well in sniffing tests. Will thought Buster had a special talent and decided to let him become a member of RAF police working dogs. Buster began working with Will in 2007, and the pair was sent to Afghanistan’s deadly Helmand province. There, Buster saved countless lives by sniffing out explosive devices (IEDs), as well as weapons. He joined his comrades repeatedly on foot patrols hunting Taliban terrorists and tracking down bombs. He also acted as a useful diplomatic tool, due to his friendly approach to local children. The RAF soon had a long train of children in tow, as Buster drew in his crowd and entertained them. After his glittering service with the RAF, Buster retired in 2011,and died in 2015 at the age of 13 at the home of his handler, Will, in Lincolnshire where he had been enjoying retirement with his handler Will, his wife Tracy and their two dogs who will inherit (继承) their father’s career. Over the course of his career, Buster is thought to have saved more than 1,000 lives. He also helped patrol British bases and searched vehicles at check points, and upon retirement was made the official RAF Police mascot (吉祥物). Buster’s brave exploits were even documented in Will’s book, which was published in January and soon became a best-selling one. Buster completed five tours of duty in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq and earned a row of campaign medals, and it was because of his great efforts in these austere environments full of wars and confrontations that he would be remembered. It was the saving of countless lives by searching out IEDs that saw the honor of official lifetime mascot of the RAF Police bestowed (授予) upon Buster. The RAF police are now planning to commemorate Buster as part of a special event to celebrate RAF Police Working Dogs. 4. Which is NOT the achievement of Buster in Helmand province? A. He succeeded in saving a lot of people. B. He became popular among local children and kept them safe. C. He sniffed out many explosives. D. He was a great helper in hunting Taliban terrorists. 5. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Buster was born at Will’s home in Lincolnshire. B. Buster’s children will also be a member of RAF police working dogs. C. Buster was bestowed the mascot during working in Afghanistan. D. Buster’s death in a campaign is a great loss for the RAF Police. 6. Which word can best replace the underlined word “austere” in the last paragraph? A. Severe. B. Respectable. C. Vast. D. Powerful. 7. What is the passage mainly about? A. A heroic sniffer dog’s legendary life. B. The requirements of being a lifetime mascot. C. Buster’s cooperation with his comrades. D. The love between Will and his dog. B 5. B 6. A 7. His life had a big change after his handler Will’s presence because Will found he did extremely well in sniffing tests.“他的管理者威尔的存在之后他的生活发生了很大的变化,因为威尔发现他在嗅探方面做得非常好。” 和There, Buster saved countless lives by sniffing out explosive devices (IEDs), as well as weapons. He joined his comrades repeatedly on foot patrols hunting Taliban terrorists and tracking down bombs.“在那里,巴斯特通过嗅出爆炸装置和武器挽救了无数人的生命。 He also acted as a useful diplomatic tool, due to his friendly approach to local children.“由于他对当地儿童的友好态度,他还充当了一个有用的外交工具。” 根据第二段in Lincolnshire where he had been enjoying retirement with his handler Will, his wife Tracy and their two dogs who will inherit (继承) their father’s career.“在林肯郡,他和他的训练员威尔、妻子特蕾西以及他们的两条狗一起享受退休生活,这两条狗将继承他们父亲的事业。” 根据最后一段中environments full of wars and confrontations that he would be remembered.“充满战争和对抗的环境,他将被铭记。” 故选A。 His life had a big change after his handler Will’s presence because Will found he did extremely well in sniffing tests.“他的训练员威尔的存在之后他的生活发生了很大的变化后,因为威尔发现他在嗅探方面做得非常好。” It was the saving of countless lives by searching out IEDs that saw the honor of official lifetime mascot of the RAF Police bestowed (授予) upon Buster. The RAF police are now planning to commemorate Buster as part of a special event to celebrate RAF Police Working Dogs.“通过搜寻简易爆炸装置拯救了无数生命,英国皇家空军授予巴斯特终身官方吉祥物的荣誉。 故选A。 本题第2小题,根据第二段in Lincolnshire where he had been enjoying retirement with his handler Will, his wife Tracy and their two dogs who will inherit (继承) their father’s career.“在林肯郡,他和他的训练员威尔、妻子特蕾西以及他们的两条狗一起享受退休生活,这两条狗将继承他们父亲的事业。” B。 C Monty Hempel is a professor of environmental sciences at Redlands University in California. He studies ecological literacy — or eco-literacy, for short. Eco-literacy is the ability to think about and understand the natural processes that make life possible. Monty Hempel says eco-literacy gives people knowledge about environmental problems. But he says it does not always work on getting them to change their behavior. Mr. Hempel wrote part of the Worldwatch Institute’s latest State of the World report. He says in his article, “Some people think that eco-literacy is just a green form of science literacy. And what I have tried to ask is whether that’s enough. In other words, what an ecologically-literate person needs to know might include things like the effect of environmental pollution on ecosystem, the energy systems, and all of those kinds of things that we would call the science of ecology.” “That doesn’t seem to lead to action to protect our environment — to protect our life-support system to the level that we need to. Just knowing a lot about the environment doesn’t mean that we actually act to save it. After all, actions speak louder than knowledge.” He adds that people may not be very worried about environmental problems if they seem far away. “Some people call it psychological distance. A lot of climate issues are worse in the Arctic and most of us don’t spend time in the Arctic. And so, there’s a certain distance. But there’s also a distance that’s happening in the world as it urbanizes — people spending more time in front of screens and less time out in nature. We become, if you will, disconnected from the natural systems that used to be the key to success for a human being.” To help children discover the wonders of nature, he adds that children should learn about nature in school. But he also points out we have a high mountain for people to climb from knowledge to action. 8. From what Monty Hempel says in Paragraph 3, we learn that _____________. A. knowledge on environmental protection is not enough B. knowledge that children learn at school is useless C. eco-literacy can help people understand how nature works D. people with enough knowledge will protect the environment well 9. What is especially important for environmental protection in Mr. Hempel’s opinion? A. Knowledge. B. Action. C. Green living. D. Psychological distance. 10. Mr. Hempel thinks people show no concern about some environmental problems because _____. A. they lack knowledge on environmental protection B. they have no awareness of environmental protection C. some environmental problems are not worse at all D. some environmental problems happen far away 11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Experts think it is the best way to learn nature in school. B. Climbing a high mountain is a good way to exercise well. C. Changing people’s attitude to environmental protection is hard. D. Knowledge can help children take action to protect the environment. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第三段中 Monty Hempel说的话,尤其是文中的“And what I have tried to ask is whether that’s enough.” 根据第四段最后一句“After all, actions speak louder than knowledge.” 根据第五段中的“Some people call it psychological distance(有些人叫它心理距离).” 根据最后一段最后一句“But he also points out we have a high mountain for people to climb from knowledge to action(但他也指出对许多人来说从知识到行动有一座高山要爬).” C。 D Since 50 years ago, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines. Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michelle Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated (展示) a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts. “Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says, “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.” The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain. Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.” He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time. 12. What is BCI? A. BCI is a technology that can link the human brain with computers. B. BCI is a technology that can help to update computer systems. C. BCI is a technology that can help the disabled to recover. D. BCI is a technology that can control a person's thoughts. 13. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory? A. By controlling his muscles. B. By talking to the machine. C. By using his mind. D. By moving his hand. 14. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5? A. scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair B. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair C. computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair D. cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair 15. Which of the following would be the BEST title for the text? A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center B. New Findings about How the Human Brain Works C. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries D. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines. 故选A。 Negative thoughts we have about ourselves can destroy our spirits. Many of us have problems with negative thoughts. The negative thoughts lead to bad feelings and they make you believe that the bad things you are suffering are actually true. In short, they bring your focus on your failures, which will make you depressed. What can you do to avoid negative thoughts to affect you?___16___ Recognize that actions always follow beliefs Whatever you believe, you’ll experience more of them. ___17___. So start believing the best about yourself and believe that you’re valuable person. Picture the good things If you want to change the negative tapes playing in your heads, you have to imagine yourself positively that means judging yourself right. ___18___. How would that look? Draw it in your mind and expand it. ___19___ You may talk to yourself with statements like "if only" or "what if". The former keeps reminding you of the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past and the future isn't here yet. Develop positive views Instead of always putting yourself down in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. Tell yourself " I am able. I'm good at it." instead of saying "I'm not good enough", ___20___. Thinking poorly gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide, today, to turn off the negative channel in your mind and develop your true possibilities. A. Forget the past B. Live in the moment C. Here are some suggestions D. Make friends with optimistic people E. Imagine a picture about yourself F. Always keep positive, rather than say something negative G. You’ll also find your actions are suitable for your beliefs 【答案】16. C 17. G 18. E 19. B 20. If you want to change the negative tapes playing in your heads, you have to imagine your-self positively that means judging yourself right.(如果你想改变脑中播放的消极磁带,你必须积极地想象自己,这意味着正确地判断自己。) How would that look? Draw it in your mind and expand it. There is nothing you can do about the past and the future isn't here yet.(你对过去无能为力,而未来还没有到来。) Tell yourself " I am able. I'm good at it." instead of saying "I'm not good enough"(告诉自己“我能行”。 Tell yourself " I am able. I'm good at it.” instead of saying" I'm not good enough"(告诉自己“我能行”。 How far would you go to make a good impression at a new job? I was very glad to have the chance to improve my speaking English. 【答案】that→who first前面加上the her→him travel→traveling/travelling around后面的to去掉 photo→photos so→such go→went but→and speaking→spoken 【解析】 【分析】 这是一篇记叙文。 故that改为who。 2. It was the first time that…“第一次……”,故first前添加the。 3. He told me that he was a college student可知,应用him。故her 改为him。 4. 固定短语show sb around somewhere“带某人参观某地”,故去掉to。 6. 此处修饰名词things,so不能修饰复数名词,故so改为such。 8. 故that改为who。 2. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Good morning , ladies and gentlemen , Some of us are having problems with our parents , as they often look into our school bags or read our diaries . I fully understand why we are not comfortable about it , but there’s no need to feel too sad. Our parents are checking our bags or diaries to make sure we are not getting into any trouble . My suggestion is : Tell them we want them to trust us as much as we’d like to trust them .If you don’t think you can talk to them , write them a letter and leave it lying around ---they are bound to read it .
