It’s bigger than Texas and growing. The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes a 62-mile-long floating barrier that would use natural currents to trap trash. If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the trash by 42% over 10 years.‎ Easy-On Shoes In 2012, Matthew Walzer, a high school student with a disability, sent a note to Nike. “My dream is to go to college,” he wrote, “without having to worry about someone coming to tie my shoes every day.” Nike assigned a design team to the challenge. This year, they came out with their solution: the FlyEase. The basketball shoe can be fastened with one hand. A pair of Nike FlyEase shoes sells for $130.‎ An Airport for Drones (无人机)‎ As Amazon, Google, and others get ready for drone delivery service, there is one big question: What kinds of home bases will their drones have? Rwanda, in Africa, may have the answer. There, workers will soon start work on three “drone ports”. I thought it was a pain that I could live with for a while.‎ However, during the next few weeks, the pain became more intense, spreading to my teeth, gums and jaw. I was told I had seven wisdom teeth.‎ Yes, you read that correctly, seven — three more than a normal person. My first reaction when I heard was to laugh. It’s just my luck. My mouth wanted to do more work than it had to.‎ Focusing on the positive, one of the great things about having extra teeth is watching people’s reactions when they find out. So far, I haven’t grown tired of repeating myself.‎ The extra teeth are also a good excuse for me being tongue-tied. I can now blame it on my overcrowded mouth rather than my slow brain.‎ Of course, with wisdom teeth come the intellect jokes. My parents say my intelligence comes from my extra teeth and not my hard work. My friends agree that once the teeth are pulled, my brain will be that of a 5-year-old.‎ I’ve also thought about how I might profit from this. If only I still believed in the tooth fairy, I could make a lot of cash. Maybe I could sell my extras to someone in need. Advertisement: Seven teeth for sale, unused, in almost perfect condition.‎ Don’t be fooled by my jokes. I am worried about having surgery. I’m also going to be sad to see the ‎ Lucky Seven go. I’ve developed quite an attachment to them over the past two days. Once they’re removed, I’ll just be normal again, and who wants that?‎ ‎24. When the author found that she had three more wisdom teeth than a normal person, she ________.‎ A. found it quite funny ‎ B. dealt with the pain calmly C. was confused and anxious ‎ D. kept it secret from others ‎25. The intellect jokes from the author’s family and friends were intended to ________.‎ A. persuade the author not to remove her wisdom teeth B. advise the author to work hard to improve her intelligence C. make fun of the author in a light-hearted way D. let the author know why she is often tongue-tied ‎26. When the author brought up the idea of tooth fairy, she ________.‎ A. thought she could rely on it to make a living B. had already made up her mind to make money C. believed that her wisdom teeth were in perfect condition D. was deeply aware that the idea couldn’t become reality ‎27. What’s the article mainly about?‎ A. People’s different reactions to the author’s wisdom teeth.‎ B. How the author has gotten on with her extra wisdom teeth.‎ C. The author’s ideas for making use of her wisdom teeth.‎ D. How the author has decided to remove her wisdom teeth.‎ C Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure under control, research suggests. Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressure-lowering drugs.‎ The research, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes (酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as Ace inhibitors, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.‎ Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to ‎ work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol (胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.‎ Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University‎ of ‎Surrey, said, "The wrong beliefs linking egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of cholesterol found in eggs. The UK public do not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat. They can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods."‎ The British Heart Foundation dropped its three-egg-a-week limit in 2005. However, almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.‎ ‎28. From the text we know that Ace inhibitors are _____.‎ A. a kind of protein ‎ B. a kind of food ‎ C. a kind of medicine ‎ D. a kind of illness ‎29. According to what Professor Bruce said, eggs _____.‎ A. are the most nutritious food B. can be included in a healthy diet C. have no effect on blood cholesterol D. are forbidden to be eaten in the ‎UK ‎30. We can infer from the text that _____.‎ A. stomach enzymes mixed with eggs can cure heart diseases B. drugs to lower blood pressure will be replaced by eating eggs C. most Britons agree the three-egg-a-week limit should be dropped D. about 50% of Britons think eating an egg a day is bad for their health ‎31. The text is meant _____.‎ A. to introduce a medicine made from eggs B. to introduce scientific findings about eggs C. to tell people how to lower their blood pressure D. to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible D You see your phone light up from the corner of your eye and quickly reach for it. What started as a simple notification(通知) check snowballs into an hour-long period as you look through rows of notifications and endless social media feeds.‎ This is by design. Tech companies such as Google and Facebook have spent years working to make consumer technology as addictive as possible. After all, time spent with their products could equal big profits for the company.‎ However, that's starting to change. Apple takes action with the introduction of tools in its new operating system aimed at informing users to better manage their smartphone usage and parental controls that allow parents to better monitor and control their children's phone time.‎ Google also offers a "Wind Down" feature to set at bedtime, which automatically puts the phone into "Do Not Disturb". No notifications will show up on your phone, and losing all color on-screen is certainly a cause to put your phone away.‎ There are still no clear guidelines on what causes tech addiction, but it's a growing concern likely on the minds of parents everywhere as they see their kids' faces constantly glued inches away from a screen. And everywhere you go, you're all but guaranteed to see people buried in their phones.‎ Apart from Apple and Google, Facebook deserves a fair amount of blame, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged in a blog post earlier this year. The social network announced plans to roll out changes aimed at making interactions more meaningful.‎ ‎"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook will go down," Zuckerberg said. "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too."‎ ‎32.What has been done to change phone addiction?‎ A. Making some color disappear on screen.‎ B. Offering functions to reduce phone use.‎ C. Improving consumer technology. ‎ D. Stopping sending messages. ‎ ‎33.What does “the social network” underlined in the Paragraph 6 refer to?‎ A.Google. B. Apple. C. A blog post. D. Facebook.‎ ‎34. What does Zuckerberg mean in the last paragraph?‎ A. Facebook is expecting fewer people to use it.‎ B. It's valuable for people to do the right thing on Facebook.‎ C. People should spend time on Facebook as little as possible.‎ D. Facebook and its consumers will have a win-win relationship.‎ ‎35. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. Fighting against Screen Addiction B. Making Tech Addiction by Design ‎ C. Controlling Children’s Phone Time D. Letting Phone Interactions Meaningful ‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ When you’re in high school, it can be difficult to find a job. You know I'm expecting a baby.‎ M: Really? I'm glad to hear that.‎ W: So with a baby coming, my husband and I are thinking of having our own place to live in. Even though we speak the same language, English people and Americans are very different. I guess that Americans have a bad name. People think that we're loud and that we speak our minds too much. So I tried to listen a bit more and not be so self-centered.‎ I love the lifestyle there. Going out for afternoon tea was fun, and I always did that with my friends. And I really loved the old buildings. We don't have anything that old in the United States, so it was pretty amazing! By the way, I also went to Australia once. The buildings there weren't so attractive either. The British also have a different sense of humor. Their comedy shows on TV are really funny.‎ I'd have to say my experience was a positive one. In fact, I'm saving up money so I can go back there again.‎
