Our favorite show was The Price is Right. We would call out our answers along with the contestants. When I got older and started going to school, we couldn’t watch our game shows regularly. That was okay with me, though because one thing I liked better than watching game shows with my grandmother was helping her bake(供烤)cakes. Watching her in the kitchen was amazing: she never seemed to need the recipes but everything she made tasted delicious. At first I would just sit in the kitchen and watch, even though I didn’t understand what she was doing, As I got older, she let me help with the easy parts, such as measuring the sugar. The day she let me separate the eggs, I felt like I had found complete pleasure. Later my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day. The love of baking, however, stayed with me. I started baking by myself, and even if the cookies ended up burnt sometimes, more often they turned out pretty well. I tried out new recipes, and whenever I got to a thorny part, I would call my grandmother for advice. Sometimes I would call her just to talk, too. I felt like I could talk to her about anything. My grandmother passed away ten years ago, but I still think of her every day. Last week, I found a recipe book she made for me. It included her recipes for brownies, cookies, and my favorite, lemon pie. As I looked through the pages, I thought I could hear her voice. She was the one who taught me not just about baking, but about life. 24.The passage is mainly developed by_ . A. analyzing causes B. making comparisons C. examining differences D. following the time order 25. While helping her grandmother bake, the author_______. A. turned out to be a troublemaker B. found it interesting and pleased C. hoped to make a living by baking D. regretted missing the game shows 26. What does the underlined word “thorny” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. Basic. B. Common. C. Difficult. D. Special. 27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To remember her grandmother. B. To show her good baking skills. C. To talk about her happy family life. D. To describe her childhood memories. C In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women. And they all got the same answer: The sexes (性别) are different, because their brains are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways. Boys, for example, generally are better than girls at mathematical (数学的) ideas. Boys also generally are better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages. What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve(神经) tracks. The left side generally is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic creation and the expression for emotions. In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it’s the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by smaller nerves than the two sides of a woman’s brain area. 28.Which of the following is best to outline(概括) the article? A. Research on the Brain B. Differences between Men and Women C. Who are Better, Boys or Girls D. People’s Different Brains 29.________ men and women think differently. A. The different brains make B. Sex makes C. The different experiences make D. The influences of society make 30.According to the article, girls are generally better than boys at _______ in your school. A. mathematics B. physics C. English D. Chemistry 31.Which of the following is true? A. The left side of brain in boys generally develops better than that in girls. B. The left side of brain in girls generally develops better than that in boys. C. Men are better than women in all things. D. The area in girls used for language skills develops better. D My favourite book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St. Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold. My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is astonished to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive. Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom’s best friend. And Injun Joe is the bad man of the story. The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour. Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story, Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century, so it sounds very real. Today it’s thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on—read it! I know you’ll enjoy it, too. 32. Where does Tom run away with his two friends? A. To a quiet street. B. To a small town. C. To an island. D. To a forest. 33. Who is the bad man in the story? A. Huck Finn. B. Injun Joe. C. Becky. D. Polly. 34. How did people feel when Tom appeared at his own funeral? A. They were surprised and happy. B. They were surprised and sad. C. They were worried and excited. D. They were frightened and happy. 35. The writer writes the article to ________. A. ask us to read the book B. tell us how popular the book is today C. tell us when Mark Twain wrote the story D. tell us why the story sounds very real 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Live a Happy Life Happiness is what we need most with the increase of pressure in modem life. ___36____Fortunately, this is not the case.
