Trust us, and your brain will thank you. Not only does reading increase the amount of daily pleasure in your life, but it could also delay dementia (痴呆) and even help you live longer.‎ But still, picking the perfect novel isn't easy. Thankfully, Business Insider asked a Harvard professor to recommend the one book he thinks every student should read in 2019—and we suggest adding it to your list, too. (No time for all the books on your list? Here's a shortcut: Read the endings to some of the world's most famous books, instead.)‎ Steven Pinker, Professor of Psychology at Harvard, recommends The Internationalists by legal scholars Hathaway and Shapiro. The book makes a surprising statement that the Kellogg-Briand Paris Peace Pact (条约) of 1928, which declared war illegal, has caused a steady drop in war throughout history.‎ ‎“But in their fascinating and evidence-rich book, they make a lifelike case,” Pinker said. “And like The Clash of Civilizations and The End of History, the book presents a sweeping vision (视野) of the international scene, making sense of many developments in the news and recent history.”‎ Other professors at Harvard recommended classics like Anna Karenina by Tolstoy, as well as Just Mercy by Stevenson, The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith, and Robot-Proof by Joseph Aoun.‎ So, go ahead and give (at least) one of these books a read in 2019! And while you're at it, you should add the following 20 books you really should have read by now to your list, too…‎ ‎21.Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “shortcut” in the 2nd paragraph?‎ A.A time-saving way to read books.‎ B.A lazy person's way to read books.‎ C.A quick way to know about endings of books.‎ D.A wise way to deal with too many books to read.‎ ‎22.What or who has reduced the number of wars throughout history?‎ A.The Paris Peace Pact. B.The Internationalists.‎ C.Hathaway and Shapiro. D.A wide vision of the international scene.‎ ‎23.What may be written in the next or last paragraph of the passage?‎ A.More advice on reading books.‎ B.The names of the 20 books recommended.‎ C.The main contents of the 20 books recommended.‎ D.The brief introduction of the 20 books recommended.‎ B ‎ A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(嗑瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.‎ I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.‎ When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.‎ I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room , a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.‎ I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how ‎ strange they may seem.‎ It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy(美味佳肴), and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.‎ ‎24.What did the writer become aware of?‎ A.She had ever typed a report about seeds.‎ B.She had various snacks while watching TV.‎ C.She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.‎ D.She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.‎ ‎25.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?‎ A.The traditions of celebrating it disappear.‎ B.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.‎ C.The families get together for it.‎ D.Children can eat delicious food on that day.‎ ‎26.The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _____.‎ A.neutral (中立的) B.critical (批评的) C.acceptable D.doubtful ‎27.What lesson can we learn from the story?‎ A.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.‎ B.It is good to form healthy eating habits.‎ C.Eating habits come from a certain culture.‎ D.Changing your eating habits will change your life.‎ C ‎ Parents have worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to their babies. They remind kids to eat with a knife and fork, and not to make noises in public. But there’s one important lesson that parents might forget, and it can’t be covered in a simple conversation. In fact, they’d better teach kids by example.‎ According to a study, babies receive more than genes(基因)from their parents. They can also absorb good qualities, such as persistence, by watching how adults behave. Researchers at MIT said that babies who watched an adult struggling with and then succeeding in something ‎ were more likely to show persistence when given a new task.‎ The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months. They were divided into three groups. In the first group, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the babies watch when she did so. In the second group, the researcher solved the problems but did not struggle with them. And for the third group, she did not do anything.‎ After that, the researcher left the children playing with a small musical toy. She showed the babies that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies in the first group discovered and pressed the toy’s button many more times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.‎ Now researchers are interested in exploring which ways influence babies most. They wonder if the results can work in the real world, and whether the lesson of persistence might last into adulthood. After all, persistence is one of the most important qualities of the successful people.‎ ‎28.What does the underlined part “one important lesson” in Paragraph 1 refer to?‎ A.Behaving politely in public. B.Setting an example to kids.‎ C.Using a knife and fork properly. D.Teaching kids necessary life skills.‎ ‎29.How did the team at MIT mainly carry out the study?‎ A.By doing a research. B.By playing with kids.‎ C.By analyzing some facts. D.By interviewing babies.‎ ‎30.What can be learned from the study?‎ A.Kids in the first group turned on the musical toy. ‎ B.Kids could copy the same behavior of the researcher.‎ C.The first group kids tried more times to turn on the toy.‎ D.Kids in the last two groups had the same performance.‎ ‎31.Which of the following would the author agree with?‎ A.Parents should spend more time with babies.‎ B.Parents should pay attention to their behavior.‎ C.Persistence is an important quality for parents.‎ D.Babies should be taught social skills from birth.‎ D It happens from time to time: you feel terrible when you take your first bite of a certain food, but after eating more, you find yourself enjoying it. This is what is called an acquired taste. But why do our tastes change?‎ The answer, according to a recent study presented at an American Chemical Society meeting in Boston, lies in proteins in our saliva (唾液).‎ Most of us tend to think saliva, almost entirely made up of water, is “only a mouth lubricant (润滑剂) helping us to swallow food,” the New York Times said. However, it also contains many proteins, which can help break food down, protect our teeth and help in tasting food.‎ To explain how these proteins affect taste, a team of scientists from Purdue University in the US invited 64 volunteers to drink a bitter-tasting chocolate milk three times a day for six weeks and rated their tastes at the same time.‎ According to the research, the participants found a strong bitterness on the first day, but the unpleasant flavor came to decrease as time went on and finally disappeared.‎ That is not all that was changing. A noticeable increase in the levels of proline-rich (富含脯氨酸的) proteins was found in the saliva samples of the test subjects in the research period. These proteins serve to reduce the bitterness we taste and improve our adaptation to this flavor.‎ ‎“We think the body adapts to reduce the negative feeling of these bitter compounds,” said Cordelia Running, a food scientist at Purdue University. “Saliva changes flavor, which in turn changes eating choices.”‎ This change in taste not only makes the food tastier, but also helps people keep an appetite for healthy food whose flavor might otherwise keep them away.‎ One day, these proteins may even be extracted (提炼) and used as a separate food additive that could help people stick to healthy food whose flavor they continue to dislike, researchers told Science Alert. And according to Running, even it doesn’t happen, the idea that “maybe some little piece of your body is actually trying to help you” could really benefit some people. Let’s wait and see.‎ ‎32.What does the underlined phrase “an acquired taste” in Paragraph 1 refer to?‎ A.The appetite for healthy food.‎ B.A mouth lubricant helping to swallow the food.‎ C.Something that tastes very delicious at first bite.‎ D.A preference that is only formed after great repetitions.‎ ‎33.What contributes to the changes of our taste?‎ A.Our negative feelings of food. B.Our adaptation to this flavor.‎ C.The proteins in our saliva. D.The flavor of the food.‎ ‎34.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?‎ A.Saliva consists of many proteins besides water.‎ B.The unpleasant flavor will increase with time going on.‎ C.A separate food additive has been extracted from the proteins.‎ D.Proteins have nothing to do with the changes of our taste.‎ ‎35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?‎ A.There will be bitter candy in the future.‎ B.You can change the flavor as you like in the future.‎ C.The researches will go on studying these proteins.‎ D.It won’t be long before we can make unhealthy food healthy.‎ ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Experts have recently found that making conversation plays an essential part in connecting with people and building closer relationships. Although most people can hold a conversation, only a few are smooth when they talk. If you have dreamed about being a good talker, or you just want to make some change, then listen up!‎ ‎●Talk slowly Generally, good talkers don’t rush into a conversation. 36. They act as if they have all the time in the world. This makes them come off as centered and collected. Model this way of talking and you will create the same effect.‎ ‎●Hold more eye contact Most people keep eye contact about 2/3 of the time or less when they talk. 37. This will convey confidence and interest in interacting with them.‎ ‎38.‎ People with good conversation skills are more likely to notice the kind of things that the average person doesn’t notice, and to bring such details into the conversation. They may notice and point out an interesting ring on the other person’s hand, a certain foreign accent, or a certain voice tone they use when saying a name. All these details help to leave a deep impression.‎ ‎●Express Your emotions ‎39. Express your feelings about those facts. Keep in mind that it is at the emotional (情感) level that people connect best.‎ ‎●Use the best words The ability to talk smoothly has a lot to do with choosing the precise(精确的) words to convey your precise feelings or thoughts. 40. It will help you develop a way with words and allow you to express yourself more easily.‎ Conversational skills don’t improve just like that. It takes time, practice and the ability to learn at a rapid rate from your own experiences.‎ A. Notice the details.‎ B. Offer interesting news.‎ C. Improve conversational skills.‎ D. Don’t just present the facts—you’re not a newspaper.‎ E. It’s a very good idea to hold eye contact just a bit more than that.‎ F.
